oops. meant to respond to both
not too familiar with this site.  i meant to respond to both of you.  so consider both of you thanked!
OOPS< correction on what I meant...
The name of that textbook I mentioned is Mecical Transcription Fundamentals and Practice. (MTFP)
Oops--- meant to add...explain your concerns & go with the one you feel most comfortable with.

How do you know that these instructors
can't afford to live on what they make at the CC? How do you know that they don't work part time for a transcription company? And I would be very leary of attending a school that offered a course and didn't have the books to go along with the courses. Every single course I took in my program had the books available for purchase in the campus book store. I responded about the name of my school at the top of this page.
and instructors of many CCs aren't even MTs
Most community colleges can't afford good instructors who really know how to transcribe. They also can't afford the kind of books and materials because administrators don't think they can get jobs anyway.
MT as instructors in College
I attend a College here in BC, Canada and our instructor is a MT in a Surgical office by day and she teaches at night at college! She likes the schedule for her family and really enjoys teaching.
4 CMT instructors of community college course? I don't think so
4 CMT instructors of community college course? I don't think so. Prove me wrong.

Someone below said 4 CMTs instructed their community college MT course. That is so hard to believe since CMTs can make more transcribing than teaching and community colleges are hurting for money. When they get money, it doesn't go to the MT course. There may be 1 or 2 exceptions. Would you post the name of your school and the web site so we can give them the credit they deserve?
CS Has to have instructors or AAMT could not approve them
It's part of the approval process. It's a requirement. They have to have instructors who are qualified.
No instructors, and home-made materials = CS.
I'm also a CS grad, and if I had it to do over again, I would definitely choose Andrews or M-TEC. No more "training track" for Spheris from CS. Focus no longer hires newbies from CS. People are finally waking up.
Oops!
Fair criticism.
I meant $500.00 not &500.00...
Sorry.
oops

Oops..nevermind. I found it.

Not quite what I meant
I just meant I could still recoup most of my fees (-30%) if I pull out before the end of this week, otherwise I'm in it for the long haul. I wouldn't pursue this as a career without the education so I'm wondering if it is worth doing this at all?
oops!
My post did not edit, that is somewhat embarrassing!
What I meant...

I was actually referring to the allstatetranscription website. I failed to notice that the link didn't show in my original post. Here it is, if anyone is interested.

www.allstatetranscription.com

I believe they would agree with the above Poster, that M-tech and Andrews are at the top of the list. I didn't know those places existed when I started into training. I don't know much about Career Step.

I went through Allied Business Schools, and their MTAPPP (medical terminology, etc) course is excellent, and very thorough, but I felt the interaction was sparce on the Transcription Course. I believe the books they use are good, they just need a bit more interaction between students and staff, more grading and feedback on transcripts. If you want to just work through their textbook on your own to see if that line of work interests you, you could get it from Barnes and Noble booksellers. It is called

Fundamentals and Practice of Medical Transcription, and it would provide a nice introduction to the subject, but I don't advise buying the whole MT course through Allied.

Oops
Haha, sorry about the "seen" typo... should be "seem" ... I usually proofread!  Very frazzled!
Oops, that s/b want

meant....question
sorry
Oops! Let's try that again... I'd really appreciate advice
on which is better: online course (one of the top three) or local community college. I've met with the dept head of our college, who answered plenty of questions I had. However, I still feel drawn to the flexibility of training at home, online. If I choose the online route, I would prefer to start working at a local dr. office after I complete the course. I've heard it's great for newbies b/c you have others around to help, etc. Have you heard/experienced if it's hard to get a job locally after graduating from an online course? I think I'd do ok getting a job from a national co, but I hear the pay is better if you're willing to go onsite locally (aprox $15 per hr to start around here), and since I am able to go outside my home, I'd rather get paid more to do that! Eventually, I'd like to work from home, but not right away.
Can you give me any insights? Thanks so much!
-Anne
OOps..REALITY!!!
f
Nobody meant to attack you...
just to warn you that some places get very upset and consider it dishonest if you list anything done in school as experience. Didn't want you to find out the hard way.

oops, reread post and saw you already work for them. Document
every thing and file a claim against them with the BBB and the attorney general's office.   If they owe you money that you can document also contact the labor board in their state.
