Same in my city -- nothing in-house
The Squid has taken over all the big facilities in my area. I never see ads for hospital MTs either in the paper or on their web sites.

I did go on an interview last year for an in-house MT in a GI practice. While they had upgraded their dictation system, they had no medical spell checker and their sole reference consisted of an old Stedman's GI word book, and this was a dept. of 6 transcriptionists. I didn't get hired. I think I just got called because the lead wanted to ask me questions on the DL about working from home for the Squid.

At any rate, I am leery of small practices as I used to be a legal secretary and had the most horrible experiences in the small legal practices, so I can only assume the doctors aren't much better.
full of questions....
Hello! I am 21 years old looking to do the training to get certified as a MT. Of course I have LOTS of questions. First of all, how hard was it for you to find an "at home" job? And also, is anyone willing to tell me how much it pays? I've seen all kinds of figures and have tried to figure out just how those figures are, well, figured. I just have a hard time believing you can make that much just for typing reports. Any help at all on this would be GREAT! Thank you!
4 hrs may be what they think is full-time
A lot of MTSOs staff based on the least amount they know an MT can do. They may be considering the amount they give you to be a full day's work.

If you are finding every MTSO to provide less than what you can do, it might be better to work for two MTSOs. Rather than changing jobs entirely, get a second job. That way, you'd have TWO assignments of what is, for you, a half-day's work.
room full of jerks
somehow you seem to fit in really well here!
I was also an RT full-time and just recently
quit FT to go PRN. I'm doing transcription FT again as I got burned out at RT work. I can tell you, once you get your line count up, the pay is about the same (although it does take a bit of time to get your line count up), or at least in my part of the country. Just to give you an average, RT I was making $18 an hour day shift other parts of the country they make much more - up to $35, but this is a very rural area with low cost of living) With MT, I'll be making around $16-19 depending on the difficulty of work. So it's comparable.
are you working part-time or full a wk?
.
I like to know if work is available 24/7 or if it's assigned each day? If full time, sm...
are you restricted to 40 hours on your time sheet? (some places have labor laws against more than 40 hours) Are you working in a compatible time zone? (There used to be no work available for me at 6a when working certain Calif. and Az. accounts because I started too early on EST.) Are you required to keep a log sheet of patients that gets submitted? Do you get paid for this log sheet? (some places will say NO as it's not "work" being turned in.) Is your invoice automatically created by their software or do you need line counting/invoice software of your own? Is faxing of anything required??? (some places will still fax you patient lists for that day...ugh!!) Can you use your own Expander and is what you're using compatible with their software? Is there docking of pay for errors? How many blanks are permissable w/o turning a file back in to QA? Do they want phone calls, emails, or IM messages if you suddenly need to take off for the day? Do you have to clock in and out whenver you leave your machine? Is there tech support available for software issues? ...I think that covers it now. Good luck to you!
Maybe not full price, I agree. But some companies are

Reply to state question
NC.....
Sounds like a sad state of affairs.
That really sounds awful! I was considering this company, having only a year's worth of experience. I was watching this thread to see how it all comes out. It does not sound like this would be a good place for me to try to start a career after all - newbie or not. I have read this stuff before. For it to keep coming up, there must be some truth to it.

Is there any newbie friendly company out there worth hitching your wagon to? Spheris sounds like it has the potential to basically be okay, but creating the environment where the MTs have to scratch around for work is just kind of sad.
Minimum wage in my state is 5.15 and
some days I don't even make that transcribing. I have two transcription accounts, heavy VR. If I only looked at this with respect for the money I made, I would be depressed. I also needed a career change (and made fair money before MT). But, I consider MT a trade off. These are some of the added benefits as I see them beyond the pay:

No to and from work commute (I save two hours daily). Not having to drive in inclement weather (that just scares me, I don't miss that). No work clothes or uniforms to buy or keep up (how do I calculate that?). No eating out for lunch or even packing a lunch for work (save money there). No office politics or drama to deal with (priceless). Being able to schedule MD appointments and other things that come up and work around those without begging my "boss'" permission (again, priceless). Not having a job where I am standing on my feet all day (I'm too old for that anymore). Saving a bit of money on taxes using my home office for work (always a help). Being home and able to keep up with the laundry, housework and have a homecooked meal on the table at a decent hour (pretty close to priceless to me). Being able to watch TV or DVDs in the evening with my husband again and have family time and even keep my grandchildren for the whole weekend if I want (priceless to me). These are some of the things that make MT a better trade off for me than what I had before when I made better pay, particularly on those days when I don't. There is value to all of that to me.

Just my opinion.
Try the FTC or your state's Department of Labor and Industry.
I think the FTC is www.ftc.org
She didn't say she worked in another state. That's why I asked WHY?

Don't know who this guy is, but he is posting on
multiple boards using different names.
Thank you for posting...sm
...it is something I want to say every time I see someone write that they don't mind a little less pay because of the benefits of savings on gas, daycare, and clothes. (Those sweats aren't free either ;)) MTs should be paid based on their knowledge, skills, and abilities--not where they complete their work. This is really something that should be on the main board, because it does affect every MT, not just us newbies/students. :)
thanks for posting this!

Yes, I have sent an email to the person that had that posted. I am still waiting on some more information. Thanks for the suggestions.
Funny how you keep coming back and posting this - sm
Makes me think YOU are the "owner" of Proficient Transcription. Hmmmmmm...

No, you're just not posting info so we understand what
You asked about companies starting out and now about educational services -- never clarifying what you are really wanting. Ask as many questions as you want just make your posts clear about what you are wanting to know. lol

To answer your question: I have been an MT 21 years. I have never heard of Gatlin Education Services.

Newbie posting resume here, is .09 too much for line pay?

Not sure what to put for my line pay in the resume section.  Anyone got any suggestions?

As long as you're posting links, how about this one from Berkley
especially where it shows US MT hourly wage at $13.17 and Indian MT hourly wage at $1.50-$2.00. With $11 an hour savings you can hire a lot of QA'ers and still make a killing!
You're only posting your opinion & website b/c CS pays you for you referrals
