In my opinion, the most advantageous route for you is to gain employment at a hospital. The experience you will gain there is invaluable. You will learn a variety of specialties with supervision that will only benefit you for transition home in the future. I have been a MT for 20+ years, and back then we all learned and worked in-house at a hospital, etc. It is my opinion that many are falsely led to believe that after finishing a MT course, you can succeed working from home immediately. Yes, there are a few who can do so, but the majority are not experienced enough to do so. This profession takes a lot of hands-on experience as part of the learning process, which will involve errors. The problem is, when you work online for a national company, most of the companies do not have the time to cater to those learning. It's all about time and production while producing a quality report. I have talked to many new MTs who have been so over stressed working from home online because they spend much of their day being corrected either via email or phone by quality assurance. In turn, both the MT and QA become frustrated, and either the new MT is let go or quits by choice because they are making such a low wage. I believe hospital employment is the best fit for a new MT, preferably hourly pay. Production pay, unless you are the exception (yes, there are some new MTs who are well-versed and have a natural ability in this profession, but the majority are not...not an insult, just the facts)is not for the new MT. We all started new at one time, and I can probably speak for most veteran MTs in saying that hospital experience is the way most of did it, and the experience has made us valuable in this profession. The work-at-home concept has been a little exaggerated for the new MT in my opinion. Good luck to you. Be persistent and work hard. You will be rewarded.
