Entry Level
I am a new MT and I would like to know how someone gets started in this field? I am so frustrated and would like to find a job. I would like to work from home, but know I need to work in an office setting first.
HELP!!!! Looking for Entry Level MT JOB!

Hello Everyone,

Can anyone tell me how I can an Entry Level MT job.  I have a AA degree in MT but have never been able to find an entry level position to utilize my degree.  Please tell me what all of you did in order to get into this field.  I can't ever find a job that without that 1yr exp.

Thank you for your help.

Entry Level
My suggestion would be to either work in the hospital or in a doctor's office.  It will be almost impossible to get an at-home position without any direct experience.  It helps having someone easily accessible to go to when questions arise.  Stay long enough to get the experience you need then if you wish to move to an at-home position, it won't be so hard to find a job.  Good Luck!

I graduated in 2004 and I am still trying to get a position as a medical Transcriptionist while working in a local grocery store deli. Good luck isn't enough eveidently.
ENTRY LEVEL
Does anyone know of companies that are hiring entry level positions?  I graduated on 04/2009 with Allied Medical School and cannot even find one company that will look at me.  I have had experience but it has been more than 2 years ago, and I guess you need recent experience.  Help!

Entry Level Jobs

Do you want to work from home?  If you can't find anything locally, try doing an internet search for some of the national MT companies.  You can always test with them and if you pass their test, you will have no problem getting a job.

If your education was not adequate, you can always try M-Tec or Andrews.  They have excellent placement rates for their graduates.

What about entry-level people?
I have been looking for a position in transcription for a while now. Everyone wants EXPERIENCE!!! My question is, how do you get experience if nobody is willing to hire you? I have taken tests and the responses that I get are that other people are more qualified but that I do have an impressive background. What do you do?
Spheris hires entry level graduates from
at 5.5 cpl, they pay direct deposit on time, insurance not that great (large deductible) and all the usual FT benefits. Only PT benefit is 401K. My supervisor, QA people, and accounts have all been decent, 4-1/2 years into it.
Employment tests are not easy, even for entry level.
They need to know what you know. Sometimes the things you blank are just as important as the things you get right.
Trouble finding Entry Level work

I just recently completed all of my course work for my AAS in Medical Transcription, graduation isn't until May, and I am having a really hard time finding entry level work.  I was just wondering if anyone had any tips that they found to be successful.  I have posted my resume on a few sites, I have been submitting resumes to every company I can, I have even been able to apply to quite a few, but still I keep being told that I do not have the experience required and to keep looking for a company with an internship/mentoring program, and I can not find any that I do not have to pay for myself.

I do understand that patience is needed, especially when first starting out, I was just hoping for a little direction and a little venting.

Thanks--Christina

Trouble finding Entry Level work
I, too, am having a hard time finding any work. We (all MTs) all started out somewhere, but I am having a hard time finding that somewhere. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.
Try Sten-Tel
Hi, I am new to this forum. I am a graduate from a 2 year program. I graduated in June of 2005 and finally got a job in october of 2005 with Sten-Tel. They have an externship program specifically for new MTs. That is how I got hired. They will QA your work until you give quality work. However, you are an independent contractor and not an employee. Send me an e-mail if you want more info. I also work from my own home. All I had to purchase was the foot pedal. The software program you get from them by downloading it.

I was just offered an extern position with Sten-Tel. Has anybody worked for them and can tell me good/bad experiences?
Sten-Tel, Inc.
Their address says MA.

I would love to have more info on this company and would greatly appreciate any that you have to give.  Is this a legit company?  I already have my Assoc. degree  in MT, am I going to have to shell out more $$?  Will I have to get more schooling?  I checked out another transcription company like this and they had several complaints filed against them with most resolved, but I was given the advice that, one should not have to pay to get a job, unless of course, it is for college.
Sten-Tel hires NEW MTs!!

If any new MTs are looking for employment.  Sten-Tel, Inc. has an externship program that hires new graduates.  Go to their website and type in the word "careers" in the search engine and it well tell you about the externship program.

I graduated in June of 2005 and got hired on with Sten-Tel October of 2005.

Send me a post if you would like more info.

GE Positions

Does anyone know of a transcription company which has an opening in GE?  This is my specialty, but I have been looking forever for an opening.  Any ideas?  Or...any ideas on how to get into recruiting MTs?

Thanks,

Amanda

What Sten-Tel branches have openings? There are many of them out there. Thx. nm

Newbie positions
I hire new MTs and I give them the experience. Granted it is harder for me but I do appreciate the opportunity I was given to get into the industry and now I am trying to give back.  I got into the business while on bedrest and pregnant with my daughter 10 years ago.  I am all about helping people.  However, I do think there are some people out there that take this job for granted.  If I hear one more person say to me "Oh I have a computer, I can do that job" I am going to scream.  You do have to be dedicated and you do have to put in the time.  I have gotten a couple of bad reviews from new MTs but the MTs that have negative things to say were the MTs that did not want to do the work or complained that it was too hard.  I have sent the same MT 4 or 5 different dictations or files in a row because there was one thing or another they felt was wrong with each one before it.  As a MTSO that is frustrating because sometimes the MT has to meet us in the middle.  If this job was so easy then everyone would be doing it and if you are as dedicated as you say you are then you just plain have to put in the time.
at-home positions

Its starting to sound like the lucrativeness of this "work at home" profession was too good to be true.  Just by what I see and hear, it seems nobody wants to hire a "newbie" and all require 2+ years of experience.  Where do they expect you to GET that experience if nobody wants to hire you?  As for working at home, that's the ONLY reason I chose this profession.  I wanted the flexibility in my schedule to be there for my daughter.  Now I'm getting discouraged right out of the gate.  As I mentioned, I have a 97% GPA and have an eye for detail.  I have an uncanny ability to spot grammatical errors.  My husband said my true calling is an editor, which I thought perhaps I'd have the ability to do as well in this field.  I'm still open to any and all suggestions.  I plan to send out letters of introduction to local area doctors and offer my services.  If anyone has any leads or other advice to offer, I'm all ears!

Thanks.

Jenn

There are positions where you can either download

work and work off-line or you work on-line and type directly into the company system or the hospital system.  If you are an independent contractor you can set your own hours.  There are some companies that have a 24-hour TAT.

You need to have schooling and/or training before you get to that point and that takes about 18 months or more.  There are some companies that won't allow offshore MTs, so even if an American that might limit your choices.

in-hospital positions
You may have already, but also check out indeed.com. They have sometimes in-house positions also.
Sten-Tel must be desperate if they have someone of her caliber advertising!

That is slightly less than most part time positions.
The average requirements run about 1200 lines for full time and 600 for part time (based on 65-character line). If this is a full-time position, it sounds like you may have found someone that will give you the opportunity to focus on quality instead of placing the emphasis on production right off the bat.
Would the open positions be for acute care or clinic? FT or PT? Thx! nm

Re-entry
Try contacting your original school and ask if they will let you sit in on some current classes -- or borrow tapes to practice on at home. Get the 3rd edition of BOS and update all your references, especially surgical instruments, as they seem to have new ones every day. Perhaps your former instructor might have some additional suggestions? Good luck! Rosie

sounds like your skill level needs work...
SO, you may do best in a hospital setting where there are oldtimers around to help you. Do NOT give up! :-)
