Could someone please explain the major differences between acute care basic 4 and multispecialty clinic transcription?   It seems that the job ads usually specify which one and how much experience is needed with each of these categories, but I am curious to know the differences and why someone with several years of multispecialty clinic experience may not do well with acute care hospital transcription.

Sorry to hear of your troubles! 

There are two main schools, Andrews School and Career Step.  If you graduate from one of these schools, then you will likely find employment quickly.  They cost more, but you get what you pay for!  You will have to test with individual companies to get hired, but that should not be a problem with the proper training.  There are plenty of companies that hire at-home workers, so that will not be a problem either.

Don't quote me on this, but I think Career Step qualifies for Pell grants so if you go through voc rehab be sure to check that out.  Good luck to you.

CAI has a message board on their site where their students exchange info, you may want to check there http://www.caihometype.com/.  Hopefully some grads will see your post here as well and contribute.  I found it to be an excellent education and I got a job within 1 1/2 weeks of graduation.  They have an extensive list of companies who hire their grads that you can ask for upon graduation.

I did look into community colleges.... It seems like the same Career Step program but triple the cost.   I like that the career step program is pretty cheap when compared to others and is an approved program. I just wonder how much harder it will be to find a job after graduating from career step then it would Andrews or m-tech....And then when you get into what program (basic, premier, etc, etc) it gets even more confusing!

They pay via Pay Pal. You have to pay a weekly license fee for software or you can purchase it. You will need 3 professional references. They deduct if you make the same mistake a few times. They do not pay for spaces or templates. They do work out of a pool although on their website it sounds as if not. You are assigned the accounts they determine. They only have someone to help you between 8 and 5. If you have a question at any other time, too bad. They do a lot of testing before you can talk to someone and more testing during phone interview. You will need to provide them with proof of going to an MT school.

Basically the AAMT representative stated in the article that "younger workers are not lining up to enter the profession." And that the median age for a transcriptionist is 48-50 years of age. I find this to be quite untrue, and I hope to be able to get information to back that up.

Is anyone familiar with the Gatlin Online Medical Transcription Course?  My daughter is consider taking it, and I don't want her to waste her money.  It is offered through a university in the area where she lives.

This is why its so confusing ...

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the future of MTs looks good - not bad (whether the pay is good is another story). This is why I thought MT was a feasible career in the first place - and this is why so many MT schools are saying there are going to be many jobs. Here is an excerpt of what they project (then see my question after it for all job educated / experienced MTs):

Employment change. Employment of medical transcriptionists is projected to grow 14 percent from 2006 to 2016, faster than the average for all occupations. Demand for medical transcription services will be spurred by a growing and aging population. Older age groups receive proportionately greater numbers of medical tests, treatments, and procedures that require documentation. A high level of demand for transcription services also will be sustained by the continued need for electronic documentation that can be shared easily among providers, third-party payers, regulators, consumers, and health information systems. Growing numbers of medical transcriptionists will be needed to amend patients’ records, edit documents from speech recognition systems, and identify discrepancies in medical reports.

So ... who do I believe? I've been on a few MT forums and I hear: no jobs, no jobs, no jobs, no jobs. I need to make up my mind about this - but it doesn't help when there are conflicting point of views. I certainly respect and highly regard those who are in the field, so I don't take your perspective lightly. I wonder if AHDI gathers and publishes statistics on job growth and employable first-time MTs who completed their MT school?

Any thoughts on any of this?

I want to hear from recent students completing the MT programs - how did your MT program work?  Was it all just work at your own pace?  Did you have any classroom time or any time that you had to join an online class?  Did you have good communication with your instructor(s)?  Did they answer you timely?  nything you would have like to have seen done differently in the program you chose?  How long did it take you to complete it?  Did they help you find a job?

I know I need the education to fill in the big holes on the little experience I have.  I will be getting info from schools like Career Step and Andrews and MTEC but I would like to hear from anyone in or graduating from those programs, too.

I've been checking out this company and they require me to buy alot of software...I know I have to have some software, but I just wanted to make sure before I spend too much time (and money-possibly) on this company.   Help, please....
