Chiropractor could be fun.
I haven't worked for any, but I've had a few treatments at a chiropractor's office. The one I went to was small, so employees wore more than one hat. Could be fun having some variety, if that should be the case where you are offered a job. Good luck!
No experience WILL show up! lol As in you will not
How funny to think it would be okay to do that.

MT rates

I am new to this field, I am a Medical Biller (18 yrs) and is currently transitioning to MT.  Can anyone tell me if you can really earn a living doing this?  I read on another site where someone produced 10,000 lines and made $235.00 that seems pretty low.  I'm not trying to make $100,000 per year.  But I at least need to make enough to pay my mortgage and eat   My ultimate reason for the change is to be able to stay home with my daughter when she starts school in a couple of years.  What's the average pay rate for a newbie and what's the most with years of experience?  Are you able to contract with more than one service? please fill me in Thanks.....

New MT pay rates

I am a new MT working from home for a national company.  I currently receive 3.0 cents per line for editing (95% of my job is editing) and 6.0 cents per line for actual transcription.

I average about 900 to 1000 lines per day and work about 6 days per week.  I only receive about $700 to $800 per month.  I feel like I am a slave!!

How can I get a higher pay rate?  Is this okay for them to only pay this much?  I have been working for them for about 3 months now.  I would like to switch to an employee status where I can make money by the hour instead of by the line.  I am currently an Independent Contractor.  This is my first MT job out of school.  I have an associates degree in MT.  I graduated June 2005.  Any ideas?

If you'll check the company board you'll find
they have been talked about several times recently.  They are an Indian company and no one has had anything good to say about them.
I think rates also vary by sm
area, too. You may be hard pressed to get 14 cpl in some smaller towns. You'll want to find out what each client wants before figuring a rate, anyway. Some may want pick up/delivery and printing and others may use digital handhelds and you won't need to pick up. You'll need to find out if you are expected to print, do they provide the letterhead, etc. You have to factor in all the charges you will incur and make sure you make a profit on top of the overhead. You may only want to charge 11-12 cpl for digital clients and 13-14 cpl for pick up/delivery clients or you can charge a flat rate for all and if they want pick up/delivery, add a fee for that to your rate. That may also encourge more to switch to digital. ;)

umm...I hate to tell you this...but further Labor Board stats show wages in 2004

at $29,530. They were $23,500 in 1997. So we've gained $6000/yr in 10 years? Woohoo- you're right-- Medical Transcription must not be in trouble.

"Compensation varies not only among regions of the country, but among types of employers as well. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical transcriptionists earned an average salary of $29,530 in 2004. The average hourly wage was $14.20."

"Medical transcriptionists averaged about $ 23,500 in 1997 woking in hospitals, and about $ 22,600 working in offices and clinics of medical doctors."

problem is rates wholesale are being forced down...sm
I actually had a doctor call me last week. She received a postcard mailing I had sent out advertising my service. They wanted to know what I charge per line. After asking some intake questions, what kind of work, TAT they wanted, etc. the doctor informed me she wasn't really satisfied on quality of work or TAT and that they were always keeping an eye out for better rates. I asked what they were paying. They are currently paying 7 cents per line. And she is still looking out for better rates. As an MTSO, we used to be able to bid a line at 14-17 cents per line and pay our IC's 9-12 cents. Nowadays I even get outbid trying for 11 cents per line. It's the competition from offshoring, EMR's and VR that is driving the price down. One of my IC's works for another service and their client, a huge PT service all over the state of Iowa, came to them and said unless you match their price, we will go with a service off shore. So the service cut the prices and the MT's are working for less. Sad but true. You probably better not count on a raise in this day and age. It's all about what the market will bear and I, for one, don't dare raise my rates.
I think I'll be done in about ....
2 months, give or take. I'm in good ol' Texas :)
You'll get there!!

I just wanted to let you know that it is possible for a new MT to get a job with a national company.  I did it, and I just graduated in December.  Just keep putting out those resumes and testing.  It will happen!! God bless!

Thank you! I'll let her know that!:-)...nm

I'll say hello!
Hello!

I'm actually quite new here too. Still trying to get used to the software. :-)

And i'll bet a lot of them have CMT behind their name. nm

You get what you pay for. Don't waste $442. You'll need it. SM
You can't learn MT for that.
I'll play!!
Aside from waiting for lessons to be graded and relentless job searching, I have nothing else to do that involves using my brain. Please post the word jumble. I will do my best!
Just hang in there....you'll get use to them
xx
With Andrews and M-Tec you'll get a job.
With Andrews and M-Tec, you'll get a job, and it will be a good job. Simple as that.

They teach more and they teach it better.

Yes, sadly, everyone has heard of AHP, as well as the miseries their graduates go through trying to find a job. No major employer, to our knowledge, will waive the experience requirements for them. They don't even get an opportunity to take employment tests.
There are more, but I'm busy. You'll notice
they refused to resolve it until after the BBB contacted them.
they'll fire you for not enough QUANTITY too, though!
lol
I'm not sure...I'll try to find out the details
and let you know.
well, tell that the MT that just lost her job. I'm sure she'll feel better.

I'll say good for you, instead of being a hater like below.
Keep up the good work!
I'll believe it when I hear from others getting their money.
nm
You'll do great, as it sounds like
you've already done your "homework".  Best of luck to you!
4 cpl editing VR is about as good as you'll get.
the straight typing portion varies greatly on cpl.
Of course it does. But I'm one of the ones near retirement, so I'll just ride it out until it

I'll give you a figure....
If you are working full time, to be on the safe side I would not expect to do more than 800 lines per day to begin with.  You may get up to 1,000 after a period of time, say 3-6 months...maybe.  As far as average length of dictation, there is no such thing.  A VERY general ratio is 4:1 (4 minutes transcribing/proofing 1 minute of dictation), and that is after some experience.  HTH
She'll need a pedal to test.
You'll need a pedal to test for companies unless you want to look slow by using your F keys.
I'll let you in on a secret. If they have global in their name they

offshore work, if the company itself isn't offshore.   You can look through the archives for past info, if there is any.

Let us know when you find a job. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones. nm

They'll need your SS# to issue your 1099 at the end of the year.

6 cpl is too much for someone just starting out. If they're good, you'll know it & can up the
rate from there. If they suck, you'll know it, too, and can either take the chance of training them or cut them loose.  I know it's brutal, but it's honest and it's business.
Go thru ALL the posts on these many pages and you'll find most of

Bad school. If you do a search using abbreviation you'll
get more info.   I'm not sure what other abbreviations you are talking about, if company abbreviations or the usual internet appreviations like DH for dear husband.  You can look on the classified board here for a foot pedal, you need USB-1.  You can also look on E-bay, or do a Google search for companies that sell new.   A new one would cost anywhere between $65 and $80.  If you go to the ExpressScribe website I think they sell them now.
If you read through the past posts here you'll
see that M-Tec and Andrews were the best.  They help with placement and most grads have a job by the time they finish up.  Career Step is the next choice.
Search for comments, but I don't think they'll hire newbies. nm

As you'll hear 1000 times, there IS no school that SM

can offer an MT certificate. You have to take the test through AAMT.

Also, what offices and hospitals want? A person who can sit down and do their work without a lot of discussion or BS. Just get the work out, make it correct. I was in a hiring position for several years at the largest hospital in my state. I didn't care about certification. I cared about test performance.

Of course a CMT behind your name means A LOT. That test is very difficult and, for the most part, if you have passed that test, no more discussion is necessary.

Only if you'll get into voice recognition and editorship. Look at how many hits a job on the job
s
Don't worry - you'll learn all that basic stuff
in school. They used to teach it in secretarial classes, of course, but if you know you want to be an MT, go to one of the top schools (M-Tec and Andrews), and you will be ready when it's time to test.
If you spent any time at all reading this board you'll
see what a struggle it is for newbies to get jobs at home.  If you go to one of the better schools your chances are better, but still no guarantee.   I think anyone looking to get into this field now is crazy.  Lots of work being offshored and lots of working going to ASR, which leaves fewer jobs for available.  j
Just keep saving his/her stuff as shortcuts/templates. After about 10 reports, you'll have
