Wireless.......

You need a wireless card for your computer and you will have to be somewhere where you can pick up broadband cable; otherwise, your computer will not do anything regardless. But, you need to be sure you have it encrypted due to security reasons. I can drive down my street with my wireless and because so many in my neighborhood do not have security on their computers (they think they do), I can pick up which ones are open. The larger airports generally have open networks you can use without physically plugging into a wall, as well as some hotels. Some places they have wireless access, but you will need to have their password to log onto their network. Hope this helps!!

No wireless in S.H. yet. It has been talked about but no such luck. Thanks for the suggestion.
what about wireless?
Does anyone know if they treat wireless differently? There's a rumor that we might (might!) get wireless out here next summer.
Stay away from wireless...
...they're more trouble than they're worth. The ones I've tried have all had a slight delay before the sound reaches the headphones, which you can imagine is quite frustrating in this line of work.

Get one with a longer cord instead and you won't feel as tethered (though be careful not to roll over it with your chair!)

I recommend finding something with lots of cushioning around the ears for more comfort and better noise cancellation. A good one will cost a lot, but it's well worth it IMO.
Wireless does not mean secured computer......
If you have a wireless card, you can use a public "hot spot" which is public wireless access but anyone with a wireless card can also access your computer and you will not know it.

Here's a site that may answer a few of your questions. Just remember, public places can be dangerous regardless with regards to your private information on a laptop. Try to at least set up the precautions listed below.

check to see if there is a wireless tower in your area...sm
you will have to do some searching as they don't contact you-- you have to contact them-- but a year ago I found there was a wireless tower about 1 mile from my house. DLS for Direct Line of Sight (NOT DSL!) and sends a wireless signal to a antenna on my roof. Very fast connections and reasonably priced (I paid $300 to install and $45/month). Ask neighbors, etc. and watch for those funky dish-looking things on people's roofs - all pointed in the same direction. I found mine because my sister switched - and then found them on the internet. Perhaps something like "wireless internet service providers [your town])?
