Yes, same with me, a word is/was considered - sm

5 characters, so 13 x 5 = 65; I would of course confirm this with the prospective employer though before agreeing to anything. If it 65 then that is the norm and acceptable; unless they are offering dirt for pay.

Something you might not have considered
Don't feel like I'm criticizing your choices, because I'm not. We make choices based on the information we have and we do the best we can. My intention here is to show you a possible option and show future MT students something they need to consider when making their decision.

You graduated and have been unable to find work for 6 months, and you're now willing to work for 3 cpl. Someone who responded to you worked for a year at low wages, as well, and is still only getting 5 cpl. She feels everyone has to "pay their dues."

However, students from two MT schools typically get offered a job with a national within days or weeks of graduating, usually at 7 or 8 cents a line for straight transcription. As soon as they get up to speed in a few months, they're able to begin earning the expected income. They typically get those jobs without internships.

If you estimate that income at only $20,000 a year, those 6 months of not being able to find a job cost you $10,000 in lost income.

The other respondent also lost about $10,000 in that first year at half-pay.

When you choose a school, you have to add the cost of not-getting a job or being able to find only a low-paying job. You have to add the cost of doing low-pay or unpaid internships.

You've already chosen your school and completed it, but the school's reputation wasn't enough for you to get a job. Let's focus on filling up the glass instead of watching it leak. What can you do now to help yourself?

You're thinking you can take a job at half-pay to pay your dues and get the experience. You're willing to spend another $10,000 or even more to pay those dues in a half-pay job for a year. You may still need 2 years of experience before anyone will hire you, so that may end up being $20,000 in lost income.

In other words, to get the job you want, you're going to have to spend another year and $10,000 or even 2 years and $20,000. At that point, you might still be unable to pass an employment test with a national.

One option you have is to enroll in M-Tec or Andrews. The most it will cost is $3800 for Andrews. M-TEC costs less.

Before you say you can't afford the money or the time, stop and think. You've already been out of work for 6 months. You have no job prospects in sight.
Once you get a job, if you can, you will probably be working for half-pay. At that rate, you will lose $10,000 a year for one or two years. You're looking at another year and $10K lost, or two more years and $20K lost.

You could avoid that. It's likely that you can get through either M-TEC or Andrews in less than a year, since you've already completed a school. When you finished, you would have a nearly guaranteed job at a regular rate of pay.

You may not have considered that as an option. Now you can.

For prospective students, file this away as something to consider. You can take a lower-cost school, but you'll pay for it later, and you'll pay far more for it than you would have paid for a better school.

I went to CareerStep, considered one of the top three
.
I think their ad said that anything under 40 hrs was considered part time. And several of us have

M-Tec and Andrews are considered the best and easier

to get a job as a newbie if you have graduated from one of them.   If she is disabled she is limited in her income and putting out the $$ it would take for a good school versus what the pay is now wouldn't be worth the effort to me.

Local colleges and community colleges may also have on-line programs.  Avoid any of those tech schools that advertise in magazines, on matchbooks, and on TV.

What is considered acute care?
I know it is definately a newbie question, but what exactly is considered acute care versus clinical?  Can you give me some examples?  Thanks!!!
YES. Career Step is considered one of the "big three"

M-Tec and Andrews are also in there.  Any school that advertises on matchbook covers or has mostly other nonmedical related courses is NOT good.

The VLC is most definitely NOT one of the best schools out there.  Some people are just promoting it to suit their own purposes.  Read the archives of the board.  Nothing good about them.  Has anyone actually met one of their grads who has gotten a job at home right out of school?  Don't forget about their digital photography and basket weaving courses.  I guess those are fallback careers for their MT grads?

Since when is asking for an answer on a test considered using a resource?
It's cheating, plain and simple. Are you the same Jenn who is having trouble with the Princeton test? If so, no wonder you disagree with what "resources" are.
Ashley, have you considered getting accounts directly with a doctor's office?
I have been very successful as an independent contractor. You should really consider it.
Acute care is considered hospital transcription - discharges, history/physicals, consults, and op

Please make sure to ask word questions on the Word Help board. There are
people who specifically answer questions there.
If you currently type in word, then do a word count
then I really can be of no help.  Usually when trying to get an idea of a line count with spaces and without spaces, you can use this method.  Some people have actual line counting software.  I, however, do not, so I am not much help in that regard.  Hope this helps at least a little.
Microsoft Word/Microsoft Word 2003 are the same
MS Word 2007 is an upgrade.  Are you sure that you don't have it installed on your PC?  I don't know if that helps...good luck, and please don't pull your hair out, it comes out with age (lol)
Word

When I have to copy and paste admission notes, for example, and then have to reformat the whole page, all the BOLD  HEADINGS become BOLD HEADINGS.  Then I have to go back and re-bold them all.  Is there a fast way to jump between headings, besides just scrolling?

Just go to the Word help
section of this website.  It's wonderful!!  I've been in the business five years and still use it quite, quite often.
word help
How do I use word help? Do I have to pay any money? Do I have to  be signed up with anything? How long does it take for me to get an answer. Thanks everyone.
Need help with a word.
the word is in regard to a type of incison for laparoscopic hernia surgery.  No mesh was necessary.   Sounds like lachsimen incision was made and there was no tension.
One word...E-bay.
You can find most of the books you would need on E-bay. If not, Amazon.com has a used book section that will save you some money. Also, you can buy directly from Stedman's and sometimes find discounts of their word books.
Pay by the word
I work for a company that pays me .02 cents per word. It is for a research company and it brings me in a nice sized paycheck. It's definitely a fair price I feel. Hope this helps.
I am sure she will take your word for that.

word help

I need some help with this transcription.  It reads  Patient was on a cruise recently and she traveled in an airplane about 10 days ago and ear pressure persists and the patient denies any hearing loss.  No ________, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting.

Can anyone help???

Word help

Hi,

Has anyone heard of Officebestdeals.com?  They are advertising Microsoft word 2003 for 11.95. So cheap!!  Kind of hesitant.  Any information on that would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Barb

Look up the word slander, Lin. SM
One would think someone so focused on quality would know the proper term, or at least know how to consult a dictionary.

stuck on a word
Hello.  Is there a site that I can ask other MTs a question if I am stuck on a word or medication?  Thanks for all your help.
The operative word being SOME...but not very many
I did not come across one company in my extensive search for employment that began before I graduated from Community College that stated they would not let me test because I didn't go to one of the "top 3".  In fact, most companies have links to their testing on their websites.  Those that don't will send you an email with the proper links for testing purposes.  To keep stating that the "top 3" schools are the be all and end all to successfully obtaining employment in this field is just plain wrong.  I was hired before I even finished school.  It depends on the determination of the person.  Two different people can come out of the same MT program and one can be an excellent MT while the other can be absolutely horrible.  Being a graduate of the "top 3" has nothing to do with it.

Its probably your system, not Word
There is a time delay because your puter probably isn't keeping up with you.  Clean out your computer and run a disk defrag.  That should help.
The word - newbie. sm

Does that word sit wrong with other people?  I'm not new to the MT business but when I see that word it just makes me cringeIt is so commonly used in this industry and, to me, comes across as demeaning when we all are fighting so hard to gain some respect in this business.

Just my gripe!

Have a great day.

What word program
do most companies require you to have to work for them? I have wordperfect 12 right now and have been using it for school. I am planning on buying something else before I start working, but I'm not sure what would be best.
You will want Word 2003 most likely, but
while you are waiting, look into Chesapeake Transcriptions and Letni. Both advertised last year for MTs with Word Perfect/Corel experience. Just an idea.
MS Word 2007
If you get MS Word 2007, it gives you the option tocreate a document and save it so that it is compatible with MS Word 2000-2003.  I would get it so that you don't have to upgrade later.
Word 2003
I agree with Keri, 2000-2003 are widely used, 2007 not much, 2003 is the best.
Word 2007 I NEED HELP!

Here's what it looks like:

1. Cor pulmonale with salt and water total body fluid      overload, with cardiomegaly and edema.

I am trying to add a couple of spaces before the word "overload" so that the "o" will be directly beneath the "C" of "Cor pulmonale". But if I just click in front of the word and touch the space bar, it won't let me do it. Any ideas? I'm desperate to try anything. Thanks

vista and word
Bring the computer back if you can and have them install windows XP....I have found that 99.9% of companies are non-vista compatible. Also, try to get Word 2003...most companies want that are not once again not compatible with Word 2007.
Word 2003?

Hi,

where do you get 2003?  They are anywhere to be found in my area.

Thanks!

word 2007 ?

Hi,

I have word 2007.  My fonts are on 10 and should be 12 and when I put it on 12 it keeps flipping back on 10.

New Time Romans flips back on something else also, how do I get it stop flipping?

Thanks a bunch!

IF you buy word 2003 can

you give it to someone else to download after you download it yourself.  Is this legal?

Thanks

What word expander do you use?

I am a newbie and have only been employed for a little less than two weeks.  I do about 300-500 lines an hour depending on which platform I am on. That really isn't all that bad, considering the fact that I have to research a lot of words. That said, I want to explore ways to increase my productivity without hurting my acuracy.

Thanks.

Word Expanders
I don't know if my reply got through.  I use Instant Text.  Expensive, but if your memory is shot some days, you just type in a few letters and it gives you a list of not only words but phrases.  I can remember to type cce when I want to have it spelled out for me as no cyanosis, clubbing or edema.  It spells better than I do.  You really save Keystrokes when you learn it over time, you just can't make a glossary for it overnight.  It comes with like 20 anyway, but like the drug one doesnt always have what I need.  And I still need to find more ways to produce more.
