lucky to receive 8 cpl straight after graduation. This is not the norm. There are many seasoned MTs who are only making 8 CPL. It is easy to say, "Don't settle for it," but the truth is new MTs should start at the bottom. If seasoned MTs are topping off at 9 or 10 CPL, it is perfectly fair for a new MT to start at 6 or 7 CPL.
