Re: Eye strain
I take frequent breaks, but also went and had a complete eye exam recently. I found out I had a slight astigmatism in my left eye, but my right eye was 20/20. I had no idea. I ended up getting glasses that I wear only when working on the computer and reading. They really seem to help. My eye doc told me to take breaks and make sure to focus on objects that were far away in order to *exercise* my eyes. Before the glasses everything I would try to focus on away from the computer would be very blurry for quite some time after stopping work. Since I got them, that has reduced considerably. You might want to check into that.
eye strain
Hello all,
I have been lurking about for a while as I decide if this is the right career choice for me. I knew the friendly folks on the boards would be able to help me out. I have been looking at the 2 major online programs and they both require a typing speed of 45 WPM. Does anyone out there know of any great typing programs that I ocvuld purchase to improve my speed? Also, how do you guys combat the eye strain and fatigue associated with staring at a computer screen for long periods of time? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
more re: eye strain

I do know there is a setting for the "flicker" of your screen that should reduce eye strain.  It is not a factory setting;  you would need to adjust it yourself through the control panel. I think it is called the refresh rate or something like that. I googled it once and found instructions on how to do it.

Also, make sure the brightness of your computer is similar to the lighting around you.

As far as typing speed, I don't know enough about specific programs to increase your speed.  I had to take a keyboarding class as part of my certificate, so the software came with the textbook.  It was fun - they had speed drills and games.  Much more fun than learning how to type in HS on an IBM Selectric!

MT eye strain

Does anyone have any suggestions to avoid or reduce computer (or rather monitor) eye strain?  Any tips would be appreciated.  I've tried eye drops, adjusting lighting, adjusting font and monitor background color, taking breaks, etc.  Sometimes it's quite a problem and really affects my lph as I do more editing than standard transcription.

Any eye strain reduction tips and eye refreshing tips appreciated  Thank you.

I adjust my font to like 200%. It helps to see the stuff bigger.
wrist strain
My first concern would be the strain on your wrists. I speak from experience since I had carpal tunnel surgery this past February. Since typing is your source of income, you must take every precaution. Laptops are just not ergonomic and I would hate for anyone to have to go through the problems I did.
