flat hourly wage, hourly + volume, and stricly volume based pay ?

I have heard there are companies that pay flat hourly, some that pay hourly plus volume pay, and then strictly per production. Anyone have any experience with these different pay structures? Know which companies do which (and will take new grads)?

Thanks : )

C-phones
I just got an e-mail from a company offering a mentorship.  I am excited, because this may be a way for me to get my foot in the door.  The only hangup is that they require a c-phone.  I know what a c-phone is, but when I did a Google search, I am finding a wide variety of products, ranging in price from $200-$2,000.  Can any of the seasoned MTs out there provide me with more information on the equipment, pricing and where in buy.

Also look up a possible knee control option. Was mentioned years ago on MTD. nm

Dictation volume

Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone else was having problems with the level of dictation available to transcribe. I work for Eagle's Landing and I'm finding that the dictation is very sporadic. When I first started it wasn't that way but ever since Hurricane Katrina the dictation has been low. Right after Hurricane Katrina there would be days with no dictation because the docs were gone to New Orleans to help out. Now the doctors are back but there is still the same problem. I am actually going to be set up on a second account so that should help me but I'm not sure when they are going to do that for me. I've heard that we are getting several new clients soon so maybe that will help. What I've started doing basically is actually keeping up with the amount of work per hour (low, medium, high volume, comp issues, etc)on an excel spreadsheet for each day of the week, I'm going to continue doing that for each week of the month, so eventually I will have several months I can look over and see if this is a chronic problem or an acute problem. I'm really hoping that this is just a temporary slow period of time. I think my frustration has also been compounded by the fact that I've had computer problems myself, the system at Eagle's Landing goes down sometimes for maintanence, and just being a new MT.

I really do plan to stick it out but I don't believe that the service would be honest with me if this is a problem that is going to be ongoing so I feel I need to keep my own records. Right now I'm living at home with my mom but eventually, in a year or so, I want to be able to move out and support myself so I need to see if this job has some stability. I understand there will be less stability than other jobs because that is how this industry is but I need enough stability to know that I can support myself atleast. As I said before in one of my earlier posts, I only started 3 months ago,(back in July) so I definitely know that the early frustrations just take time and experience to work through so I do plan on sticking it out. I guess my concern with lack of dictation is that it is something I cannot control, my speed is something I can control, I can work really hard and get better at that, but this is something I cannot. The problems with the sporadic dictation I would say have been going on since the middle of August, it does not seem like very long but it seems like forever when I'm trying to build up my speed and when I'm new at this. Anyway, I would appreciate some feedback on this from new MTs and more experienced MTs. Oh, also another thing I've noticed just from reading this message board and others is that a lot of MTs keep up with their line counts on a spread sheet. What I tend to do is watch my production based on the number of minutes I type. Should I be looking more at line count than minutes and also keeping track of that more closely? I have noticed that I do not follow my life count as diligently as others. And finally I want to thank everyone for the input I've already gotten from this board, it has been very helpful to me, and I have definitely taken the advice to heart and used it.

When I asked them questions about volume,
they told me to forget it. Seriously, if I remember correctly the exact words were "don't quit your current job." I find it very rude that they would act this way all for asking about the workload (this was just before interviewing with them). They were offering 3 cpl and I asked them if the workload was enough to compensate.
Do you work nights and produce very high volume for your 12 cpl? Are these your own accounts?
s
Yes, please do! Every bit helps.

Thank you!!! That helps a lot! nm

Thank you. That helps out a lot.
What you said is more along the line of what I was thinking, but that app did set my mind to wondering. Thanks again.
Thanks, this helps!
I appreciate any response that gives me some idea of what to expect. I certainly don't expect alot right out of the gate, but don't want to sell myself to the devil either!!
Hope this helps

I got this by typing "set font" into the help area:

Set the default font

  1. If your document already contains text formatted with the properties you want to use, select that text.
  2. On the Format menu, click Font.
  3. Select the options you want to apply to the default (default: A predefined setting. You can accept the default option settings, or you can change them to suit your own preferences.) font. If you selected text in step 1, the properties you want will appear in the dialog box.
  4. Click Default.

Any new document you open will use the font settings you select.

(The default button is on the lower left hand side of the format font screen.)
hope it helps
I really appreciate your reply. I'm not concerned with benefits as I can go on my husband's group insurance. I saw a post that MDI-MD takes part timers. Ever hear of them?
Hope this helps
I was just in your shoes. I saw on the job board the other day there was a posting:

It helps if you look at ESL/accents (sm)

as music.  Some are classical, some are rap, some are rock.  You just have to find the rhythm and cadence of their speech and then it's so much easier.

It takes time but once you get into that zone of realizing they each have an individual "music" to their dictating, it becomes easier.  I have 3 ESLs, each from a different country.  I honestly wouldn't trade them for the world ... at times, they're easier than my American-born doctors.

A lot of people panic but seriously, once you learn that rhythm, it all falls into place.  Good luck!

I emailed you; hope it helps.

you're quite welcome! hope it helps.

love MT
AmyAmyO,
Do your research on the field locally and go to the library. call local doctor offices and ask to speak with their MT to get info. Find out about a refresher course and there is a book at the library about researching to prepare for the field. Very good book. I love it! Good luck!
I do and so far I love it!!

I do too and love it as well.

WOULD LOVE

to see the list of jobs/companies earlier poster mentioned.... could you post a link on this forum? It might bless a lot of folks!

Where's the love??
I beg your pardon, I'm an Allied grad and I'm working as an MT.
Been at it 25+ years, still love it the same way I did at first. NM

Would love one! but like I mentioned
locally, there aren't any. I have went to all the dr.'s offices and the hospital and they have went to a paper form. They had used a service in a town 10 miles away and I applied and tested with the owner, who I knew and she would have hired me but she was notified that the work she had was being cut, since the paper form was being implemented, and she was going to have to down-size her workers. I had had a job line-ed up that paid hourly before they decided to go to this new form and lucked out. Now, I need to find something over the internet.
I currently work for them and LOVE it! sm
They are an awesome company, and I cannot say ANYTHING bad about them. I have been with them for 10 months now. Good luck!
love that dmz list
That site is where I found my first job.  I recieved 13 responses from that list and I had ZERO experience.  I have been working now for one month. :)
Most people love ES and that is what my
company uses.  There are lots of choices available, but I don't think there are any free ones.  There is Start/Stop and Bytescribe (haven't heard about them lately not sure if they are still around), and GearPlayer.
I love my job and am very happy!

However, I feel like I should warn you that after a year and a half, I am still making around minimum wage.  This is okay with me.  I like being able to work at home and the flexibility.  However, I know my salary would not work for everyone.  Some people simply need more money right off the bat, so I don't think MT is the best choice for them.

I love that analogy! That's encouraging!
Thanks cm, for spurring on this soon to be MT student! :)
I did it and I loved it! I love the lady over it!! She is the best!

I love doing psych notes
they do tend to be boring, but are usually in pretty plain English and are pretty long, so you get lots of lines. Easy money.
how does TV addiction equate to love from a mother?
She is a newbie. She will need blocks of time to do research, learn her trade before she is actually contributing to "society." But also, being part of society is being responsible. I used no rudeness in my post in expressing my sadness over her attitude. Your post was less polite and much less insightful and though provoking. TV does not mean a mother loves her child/ren. TV creates drones who emulate what they see and is addictive. Will they be eating in front of the TV with no time to run, jump, skip, play? What about the obesity epidemic in this country. Studies have linked it directly to parents using TV as a babysitter. Just think about what is best for everyone concerned and the reasons for the concerns.
I love reading your posts Patti!

I do Radiology now, kind of fell into it but love it. nm

I personally love ShortHand for Windows

I love the work. If I worked at Wal-Mart
I would hate every minute of it.  I am not really a people person and need an intellectual challenge to be happy.  I learn new things all the time with MT, so it is always interesting.  Also, I love being available at a moment's notice if my kids get sick at school, being able to change my schedule easily if they have a field trip, etc.  Money isn't everything, and this is the right career for me at the moment.
Love the idea on using a phone book A-Z for writing down
I have almost 4 year experience now and may branch out on my own next year I think, or at least try. Love the idea of using the phone book, can't believe I never thought of it. Thanks for the tip.
Just stopping in to wish love, peace, and health to all my "newbie" friends here!....sm
Hope you all have a wonderful blessed holiday and that the upcoming year has prospertiy and contentment for you all!!!
Yes, the Rad book is good, as is the Ortho & Rehab words. A drug book helps or one on CD. Book mark
,
Who said I HATE this field? I LOVE this field but

also see the changes coming down the pike. Also feel it is not fair to withhold or misrepresent that part of the equation to someone who is considering entering MT or just starting out. Knowledge is power. It would take years for a new MT to have the kind of insight into this field that a 20+ year experience lends. Believe me, I would be only too happy to keep running my MTSO, making $75,000+ year while working 20 hours a week, paying my MT's well, but it's not going to happen. Try reading "The World is Flat" by Thomas Friedman if you want a perspective of what's going to happen to not only MT work but a lot of great white collar jobs. India and the rest of the world are breathing down our necks and in the next decade will be serious competitors for American jobs. There will be no "american" jobs - we will be competing against the rest of the world for jobs.

Friedman states: "The convergence of 'flatteners' has created a whole new platform. It is a global, Web-enabled platform for multiple forms of collaboration. This platform enables individuals, groups, companies and universities anywhere in the world to collaborate...this platform operates without regard to geography, distance, time, and, in the near future, even language. Going forward, this platform is going to be at the center of everything...wealth and power will flow to those who get these basic things right...the infrastructure to connect with the platform and the education to get more of their people working on the platform.

Please wake up and look beyond our box.

$600/year!! I would LOVE to pay 600/year -
I end up paying in $2000+/year EVEN WITH MY DEDUCTIONS, and I deduct anything and everything!! My accountant keeps telling me to buy a house or have a baby and then I wouldn't pay in so much.
