Bury the hatchet
Well, here I am, coming out of retreat to respond. My first reaction to your post was one of excitement and I thought to myself, "does this mean I get to keep my name?" Then again, on second thought, it probably needs to be buried along with the hatchet in the interest of a clean slate and all.

Here's a compliment for you. I couldn't have said it better myself about taking things too personally. That 3rd person suggestion from my therapist friend really does go a long, long way when trying to keep one’s self from going off the deep end.

With my husband being a political refugee from Iran, and Bush’s “you are either for us or against us” line in the sand after 9/11, I found myself on the wrong side of that line, being equally concerned for his safety as one who would be perceived as a terrorist (it happened a time or 2), as I was appalled by the bombing itself. He lives in fear of somehow losing his status and being deported (irrational as that might sound) back to a place where he would be imprisoned, tortured and executed just for expressing a critical view of the Islamic regime.

My passions does not arise out of hatred for Republicans. It is hard to explain what it is like to live in the shadows where, at any given moment, that terrorist accusation could be hurled at someone as undeserving as he and that terrorist stereotype could ultimately threaten his status and his worst nightmares could be realized. Many of my fellow left-wing radicals share that feeling of being in the shadows, in terms of our perceptions that our viewpoints over the past 8 years have not been well represented in the media or in Congress. Let’s face it. It has not been exactly stylish or politically correct to be an L-word (liberal).

I am amazed that the moderator did not step in and I really appreciate that she let us have our say. We never could have arrived at the dawn of this new day had she not stayed in the shadows, herself. Get ready for another compliment. Yes, I equate bigotry with ignorance, but you actually are an intelligent, “worthy opponent.” If we are so well matched in artful slander, who knows what we can come up with in its absence? We might actually be able to spark debate lively enough to include more than 2 sides to a story.

Thanks to all who stepped in to diffuse this situation…and Sam, I really am going to miss our “chats” while being preoccupied with the job search. As challenging as it might sound, I believe that both of us are up to the task of 3rd person debate and I promise to try my best to leave you buttons alone. In the meantime, take care.
