Right now healthcare is basically run by private industry.  This means they are in it for the money.  That means that most of the time with the institutions I noted previously money is deemed as more important than healthcare itself.  That is why I would be in favor of nationalizing healthcare altogether.  Yep, a lot would say that's socialism, but I say, it doesn't matter what you call it if it works.  If the govt did that, then yes, there would be profit involved, however, it would remove competition to a certain extent between drug and insurance companies.  For example...Humana is supposed to be a supplemental insurance to Medicare.  It's dirt cheap, they sell it like wildfire to seniors, but it doesn't pay squat.  So, what happens is that those people who bought it are stuck with it for however long their contract is (or at least until they can sign up for part whatever for Medicare the following year), and this costs them an arm and a leg.  So in the end, they get very little coverage either way.  They either get pitiful coverage with companies like Humana or part A,B, and C for Medicare, or they get pretty decent coverage with Medicare D, but who on a fixed income can afford that?  The bottom line is that they wind up either not being able to afford the premiums or not being able to afford procedures and drugs.  With HMOs you run into just about the same situation.  Your health is dependant on what you can pay.  In my opinion, that's what competition and a free market do to healthcare.
