the bottom line is that nobody really knows for sure how bad it's going to be and just how soon. There has never in history been this many people on this planet and we of course have no experience with global warming. Something has got to give at some point. The consensus is that global warming should be averted if possible so we don't have to find out how catastrophic it would be. After all, this planet can only support so many humans, and can only take so much pollution and so much disruption - it is basically a closed system.
