are going to need a combination of ethanol, hybrid, electric, hydrogen, and gas etc. And public transportation.

But I think changing our attitudes about what we need and what we want would be a public service too. We're too ingrained with the idea of living large or looking like we're living large. Until we stop basing our worth on what we can afford to consume we will never, as a society, have the means/funds to produce a better way.

In the meantime, as China and India race to become the next superpower of consumption/production I doubt we see little progress in energy efficient transportation - they will continue with oil/gas methods.

But maybe, back in the coming third world USA, the American innovators of the future will create the efficiency we're looking for. After all, necessity is the mother of invention.
