I will tell you what I know about this...

first, this went to a federal jury at trial, lasted two weeks, and the jury found them guilty. I, of course, have no idea who comprised the jury, but it was a jury nonetheless. I understand that after the incident was over, 700 pounds of marijuana was found in the illegal's vehicle, so their suspicions were at least correct. The story that the illegal tells (and by the way, border agents shot 15 rounds at him and only one hit him, in the rear end) is that they had him out of the vehicle, and that one of them raised his rifle butt and was going to hit him with it, and in fear or his life or what would come next, he ran, and when he ran, they shot at him. I am not sure how I feel about this...because on the one hand, he was an illegal, in my mind I don't know why he is afforded the same rights in a US court as a citizen. I have a problem with THAT part of it. The agents must have thought they did something wrong, because they filed a false report of the incident and did not tell their supervisor about the shooting. Apparently the jury believed the illegal and did not believe them. It did go through our court system. There are those who want Bush to pardon the patrol agents. I am kinda torn here...but if we are going to have a border patrol, we need to support them...on the other hand, they need to act responsibly. Bottom line...only the agents and the illegal were there, and the jury believed the illegal. The fact that there WAS 700 lb of marijuana in the truck did not appear to make a difference to the jury. I think the fact that he just got shot in the hind end...it should have been dispensed of with paying to have his butt fixed and deporting him without charging him for the marijuana and a harsh reprimand for the agents would have been the thing to do...I don't know what the jury was thinking...but then I did not hear the case and I did not see what they saw....sooo....hard to come down on either side of this real hard..in this particular case.
