The amount of $$ paid out in benefits to smokers
the amount of tax revenue generated by the sale of tobacco. You don't seem to protest too loudly when it comes time to spend it and waste no time marginalizing and bashing people with an addiction. These are tired tactics designed to take the focus off of the REAL issues raised in this thread with regard to the economy and differences between party platforms, policies and plans. Just how long do ou think pubs can run and hide from the fact that what they have to offer is EXACTLY the same thing as what we all are running fast and far away from? Careful, your desperation is showing.
they went out to people who paid taxes, too.

union people will still get paid for doing nothing.

ACORN hired inner city people, paid by commission, probably to buy

I think the amount of money that

politicians and athletes make is just crazy.  Don't even get me started on athletes.  LOL!

Uh.....the mandate for the amount of recruits need come from the ..sm
commander in chief, i.e., Rummy. Do they not?

The recruiters just don't reach up and grab a number of recruits that they want to recruit. The pressure that these recruiters are feeling not meeting their recruitment goals (which have to be set by someone) is trickling down from the White House.
Being able to have a gun offers some amount of protection (sm)
I do not have a gun, however, with gun control, only the registered guns are taken, right? That would be the people who have them legally.  Criminals do not generally make sure everything is all nice and properly registered, so they get to keep theirs and no one else does.  Kind of makes things seem off-balance, don't you think?
I have no problem with the amount of money
It is going right into the economy after all. Frankly, I am surprised it is not costing more.

If these calls did not amount to a hill of
beans when it came time for my representatives to *roll up their sleeves* and do *THEIR JOBS,* then it is time to fire them and elect someone who will listen to the calls. That is why we elected them, to listen to their constituents and REPRESENT us! You just do not get the picture at all.
minmum wage
I think a lot of people are forgetting that the minimum wage jobs are mainly the non-degree jobs and basically are for those high-school/ college kids who are trying to save up money for whatever...It's unfortunate that these jobs have become the main source of income for a lot of adults trying to raise a family. However, you can't just raise the minimum wage without it affecting the total picture for the businesses involved. It will create higher prices and/or lay-offs from those businesses. It always has in past times.

This is exactly why there is a state welfare system and also unemployement for those who qualify. There is basic medical insurance also provided to those who once again qualify for it. I know by experience that there are some things these insurances pay on that private ones don't. For example, when I was a manager of a retail store years ago, I needed to get my front teeth capped secondary to a car accident. My insurance didn't cover enough of the cost as they felt it was more "cosmetic." However, one of my employees ended up getting all of her teeth capped via Medicaid with no cost to her at all. I finally was able to afford my two teeth caps about 15 years later.

Obama has done what most presidents do. They get done a few of the things they promise in their campaigns but then change their tune on the majority of issues. It appears he is much more interested in the banks and insurance companies than with the average person. His solution is to keep giving them more and more money. He wants to give breaks to "first time" home buyers and "troubled" mortgage holders...if the banks go along with it that is. Why not just require all banks to adjust any mortgage above the current interest rate period! No qualifying, no nothing, just press the key and change the rate. Yes, it will involve some paperwork on the bank's end but so what.

Reality is a bank is there to make money and they won't decrease their profits unless mandated to do so. Regardless of whether it is coming from a mortgage, credit card, etc.

Wage-Law Enforcement

As the wages of most MTs has gradually dwindled to pennies (I made 10 cpl 16 years ago....now that's considered "good.") It's nice to see there may be some help on the horizon. BTW - they can stuff their VBC. Article link:  http://www.truthout.org/032609LA

US Steps up Wage-Law Enforcement

US Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis said she is committed to ensuring that all workers are paid at least minimum wage and proper overtime. (Photo: Getty Images)

Washington - The Labor Department is hiring 150 more investigators to enforce wage and child labor laws in the wake of a government probe that found the agency failed to effectively fight wage theft over the last few years.

The stepped-up hiring is a signal to employers that attempts to dodge full payment of wages will be met with new focus, and the latest sign of the increasingly vigorous approach to workplace regulation President Barack Obama vowed his Labor Department would take.

In addition to the 150 investigators being hired to help enforce wage and child labor laws, the department is hiring another 100 investigators in Wage and Hour as part of the government stimulus plan to ensure contractors on stimulus projects are in compliance with applicable laws. The total of 250 will increase staff in the division by more than a third.

she said her experience was w/ minimum wage workers
she said it herself what they were paid - minimum wage -duh
then why were you referring to "minimum wage" workers
I never said I'm for giving them a handout...don't know where that's coming from. I was just pointing out the quality of employee you get when you pay minimum wage...why would you refer to minimum wage if you paid them well and didn't pay min wage? I wouldn't expect to get the most reliable people if I were paying minimum.
I said typical minimimum wage workers

I paid well above minimum wage...I guess reading my post it looks like I paid minimum.  That was my mistake.

I refer to minimum wage workers because...
This type of work normally paid minimum wage.  I, however, did not...

GOP-Run Senate Kills Minimum Wage Increase...sm
GOP-Run Senate Kills Minimum Wage Increase
Republican-controlled Senate derails proposed election-year increase in minimum wage

WASHINGTON, Jun. 22, 2006
By DAVID ESPO AP Special Correspondent
(AP)

(AP) The Republican-controlled Senate smothered a proposed election-year increase in the minimum wage Wednesday, rejecting Democratic claims that it was past time to boost the $5.15 hourly pay floor that has been in effect for nearly a decade.

The 52-46 vote was eight short of the 60 needed for approval under budget rules and came one day after House Republican leaders made clear they do not intend to allow a vote on the issue, fearing it might pass.

The Senate vote marked the ninth time since 1997 that Democrats there have proposed _ and Republicans have blocked _ a stand-alone increase in the minimum wage. The debate fell along predictable lines.

Americans believe that no one who works hard for a living should have to live in poverty. A job should lift you out of poverty, not keep you in it, said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass. He said a worker paid $5.15 an hour would earn $10,700 a year, almost $6,000 below the poverty line for a family of three.

Kennedy also said lawmakers' annual pay has risen by roughly $30,000 since the last increase in the minimum wage.

Republicans said a minimum wage increase would wind up hurting the low-wage workers that Democrats said they want to help.

For every increase you make in the minimum wage, you will cost some of them their jobs, said Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga.

He described the clash as a classic debate between two very different philosophies. One philosophy that believes in the marketplace, the competitive system ... and entrepreneurship. And secondly is the argument that says the government knows better and that topdown mandates work.

The measure drew the support of 43 Democrats, eight Republicans and one independent. Four of those eight Republicans are seeking re-election in the fall.

Democrats had conceded in advance that this attempt to raise the minimum wage would fare no better than their previous attempts. At the same time, they have made clear in recent days they hope to gain support in the coming midterm elections by stressing the issue. Organized labor supports the legislation, and Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., said that contrary to some impressions, most minimum wage workers are adults, not teenagers, and many of them are women.

When the Democrats control the Senate, one of the first pieces of legislation we'll see is an increase in the minimum wage, said Kennedy.

His proposal would have increased the minimum wage to $5.85 beginning 60 days after the legislation was enacted; to $6.55 one year later; and to $7.25 a year after that. He said inflation has eroded the value of the current $5.15 minimum wage by 20 percent.

With the help of a few rebellious Republicans, House Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee succeeded in attaching a minimum wage increase last week to legislation providing funding for federal social programs. Fearing that the House would pass the measure with the increase intact, the GOP leadership swiftly decided to sidetrack the entire bill.

I am opposed to it, and I think a vast majority of our (rank and file) is opposed to it, House Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said Tuesday.

Pressed by reporters, he said, There are limits to my willingness to just throw anything out on the floor.

On Wednesday, his spokesman, Kevin Madden, said Boehner has told fellow Republicans the House will have to deal with this some way. He said no decisions had been made.

While Democrats depend on organized labor to win elections, Republicans are closely aligned with business interests that oppose any increase in the federal wage floor or would like changes in the current system.

Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, offered an alternative that proposed a minimum wage increase of $1.10 over 18 months, in two steps.

The increase was coupled with a variety of provisions offering regulatory or tax relief to small businesses, including one to exempt enterprises with less than $1 million in annual receipts from the federal wage and hour law entirely. The current exemption level is $500,000, and a Republican document noted the amount had lagged behind inflation.

Additionally, Republicans proposed a system of optional flextime for workers, a step that Enzi said would allow employees, at their discretion, to work more than 40 hours one week in exchange for more time off the next. Unions generally oppose such initiatives, and the Republican plan drew 45 votes, with 53 in opposition.

she HAD registered
and later found on the Maricopa county web site that her registration was listed as "active and eligible." This is just one weird thing. I guess I was wondering about why they would offer a provisional ballot if it doesn't count anyway.
JM = 2 cars registered; CM = 11 cars registered ------->> sm
John McCain can't even raise his arms above his shoulders to comb his hair. He barely drives, if at all. Cindy does most of the driving, as she has said in the past.

Cindy is a multimillionaire. John is not.

So what?

Doesn't anyone wonder how Barack and Michelle Obama gets to and from work and kid stuff with only one car?

My bet is someone has limo service paid by the tax payer.

Maybe JM does too, who knows and who cares??????

This story is a whole lot of nothing, designed to make all the little people (of which I am one, although doesn't bother me).....up in arms because someone with a rich wife has a lot of money and a lot of cars.

SO WHAT!!!!!!!

Sheesh.....like this is really newsworthy......

LOL...Casper has definitely been registered...
if ACORN had anything to do with it. Good one, Kaydie.
I am registered pub but only 1 time

voted straight ticket. I always vote for whomever I think is the best man for the job. Like or not, I guess you could call me independent.

You are so against pubs and for O no matter what he does, I think you had better start reading up on his history before you start blasting everyone that didn't vote for him. Those people that didn't vote for him, me included, used our heads. We looked at his background. He was not qualified for the office. That's the main reason why I didn't vote for him.

It doesn't matter to you who was the best man, it just mattered if it was O. You should start voting with your head instead of your heart as all patriotic Americans  do, instead of listening to promises made and broken all the time as O is doing right now. All you do is bash anyone against O, but if you would look at his history, you would see some eye-popping problems. At first, I thought he may be the candidate for change, but when I thought about it and delved into his history, I was wondering how much it was going to cost our country in dollars, and especially in freedom.

Well......we got change, didn't we?....and it hasn't been very good change at that so far. He's weak and he favors speeches over action -----except where spending money is concerned. He pushed through legislation even though most of the people didn't want it and got our country in debt so that our grandchildren will still be paying for it for years to come.

FYI, anyone in the Congress and Senate if they have been there 5 years or longer don't deserve our votes. They have no idea what the real Americans are going through and that is why I wish I lived in all 50 states....to vote those who don't look out for the people.... out of office.  I'm talking mainly about Pelosi, Dodd, Frank, and those who voted for these stimuls/TARP plans that do nothing for permanent jobs, which includes O and McC.

Our country is going down the drain and all you can think about is O. I don't understand your thinking.

You better wake up before it's too late....and this is my last post on this matter.

Both of my parents were registered Democrats....
I grew up in a Democrat household. That being said...my parents would not recognize the Democratic party as it is today. And they could not be classified as liberals, based on what I hear and see from those who call themselves liberals. I should be more specific I suppose...when I say "liberals" I am referring to those who post here who have identified themselves as liberals, and those I have seen in print and in the media who identify themselves as liberals. That is my basis. Really has nothing to do with registered Democrats...I have no way of knowing if the liberals who post here and identify themselves as such are registered Democrats. Color me confused because I was lamblasted by some who identified themselves as liberals, proceeded to tell me there were no true liberals in the Democratic party (well, that is news to them then, because many of them call themselves liberals). That is when I made the comment that it was hardly to understand what a liberal really was when there are those who define themselves as liberals who are also Democrats and those who define themselves as liberals and say there are no liberals in the democratic party. Yeah...that is a little confusing. However...that being said...when you see me post something about "liberals" I am talking about those I have come into contact with...either in my personal life, on this board, or in print or media...all who have defined themselves as "liberals." Certainly not everyone in the country...have not met them and have no idea what THEIR interpretation of liberal is. I just have to go with what I have experience with. That being said...in my personal life are two stepdaughters who define themselves as liberals, and we have lively debates, believe me. However, I see the same tendencies in them that I see in some here who define themselves as liberal. Doesn't mean we do not care about each other, because we do. We love each other through it. But those who do not have a personal relationship with someone with opposing view...seem to want to demonize the other side. We are all Americans...and we should be able to love each other through it. And as a country we are not doing that...we are doing the opposite, and letting people like Ann Coulter and AL Franken divide us even further...when we should be condemning both. That is all I am saying... :-)
I have no "party." I am a registered Independent.
And I look at more than how someone speaks. Obama has had 18 months to get polished and up to speed. She has had a couple of months. As far as running a government, if something happened to McCain Palin would surround herself with advisors, just like Obama has done...Biden for foreign policy, plus the other 300 he has on staff, and we get Obama on day one. I have no doubt she would do every bit as well as Obama would. There is more than giving a blazing teleprompter speech than running the country. She has ably run a state, balanced the budget and given refunds on budget surpulses to her constituents. You are not able to do that if you are stupid. Again, I have no party...but I am confident in John McCain and if, God forbid, something happened to him I would be confident in Sarah Palin. At least I know she does not have an agenda to turn this country into a socialist nightmare, and Barak Hussein Obama has demonstrated he wants to do that, it is evident in what he says he WILL do, and that is why NOBAMA, NO WAY, NO HOW.
I am a registered Independent for that very reason.
This is not about Democrat and Republican for me. If you study socialism, it nearly always evolves into dictatorship...Cuba...Venezuela...and it destroys the middle class. All you have in socialism are some haves at the top, now in government, and the have nots at the bottom. How is life in Cuba for the "middle class?"

Unfortunately, these folks are the only two we have right now. And I will not be responsible for putting a far left socialist in the White House.

Sarah Palin IS talking about giving the government back to the people, and that you should serve with a servant's heart. So far she still has that notion that public servants are elected to serve the public. And SHE is the one you want to throw under the bus. Good grief.
Are you registered to vote as Nanaw? nm
:p
unsure if registered to vote?
maybe you have kids, friends or neighbors that weren't sure?  can go to canivote.org and find out.  (info came through our post office).
He is registered - but we do not have a draft so it does not matter -
They no longer draft people. To be honest, I think they should though. The military is made up of poor people who feel that is their only option. I bet if we got some of those rich boys in the army putting their butts on the line, then a lot of decisions that are made at this point would be made differently!!!
Fraudulent voting IS but they only registered names like
Obviously they cannot vote with those names. Also, the FBI is investigating so you dummy don't have to worry.
As far as a I know she should have registered 3 weeks ago. online or by mail...nm
nm
You are right on, but Nancy Pelosi is so darned MILITANT about her leftist views, (registered Dem he
I think some of those mice are running amok in her head. I used to respect her as a strong female role model in politics, but lately she has become just another aggressive, abrasive, cultish Demobot that I am totally sick of her. The more I get into politics, the more I am convinced we need a new system, this two-party system is antiquated and has become just sorry, elitist clubs, us versus them, as America's heart and soul deteriorates, we have become the new Roman Empire, writing our own end...starting with the wrong stimulus bill in this depression. Shame on them all. Sorry for venting, watching C-Span while I work all week!
That's right. He was paid but he
drove a used car and made about 10K a year.  Apparently, he didn't do it for the money, so what's your point?
And those that do less, get paid less....
xx
And you really think HE paid for them?
Hate to break it to you hun, but in the end, we still paid for them. He works in the GOVERNMENT. Meaning he is paid with TAX dollars. OUR tax dollars.

They are running a campaign. Obviously, image is everything. Otherwise you all wouldn't be hating on the fact that John is an old man or that Sarah is a beauty pageant winner.

I'm so glad this is an important issue. If you want something donated to charity, contact O and tell him to sell his jet and give the money to hungry children.

Sheesh.
You PAID them? Gee, let's put you in DC
nm
No stress here. If anyone is getting paid here...
it would seem to be the dem attack machine. thanks for your concern tho.
She paid for the tanning bed herself...
not the taxpayers. Maybe we should go in all the gov mansions in the lower 48 and see who installed what. Sheesh! lol.

As to the rape kit thing...you act as if Wasilla, Alaska is the only city who did that. It is common practice in the lower 48 as well. That does not make it right, but it is not isolated to Sarah Palin. And it you look closer, the Wasilla Police Department AND the State police (not under her jurisdiction) were actually paying for the testing, and then passing the cost on to the patient, which prompted the STATE, because of the state troopers billing as well, to ban the practice. So if you are going to take Wasilla to task for it, add several towns in the lower 48 to the list.
Yes, and the devil will be paid. n/m

It's not about what she wears. It's about who paid
of the populist appeals to the no frills, no elites allowed "working folks" who they are trying to dupe into believing they give a rat's butt about. If they are so cavalier with their campaign contributions, no telling what they would be willing to do if they ever got their hands on taxpayer money.
I am not b*tching about how little MTs are paid....
and we the people DO pay for union contracts with higher prices on goods. Union dues DO NOT pay for their benefits. Employers DO, who pass that on to consumers. I know you know that.

You don't have to tell me about Sam. I grew up in Sam country. I know a few blue haired ladies who started in the first store built in my little town who are rich today because of the profit sharing.

Yes, I shop at Wal-Mart. As do many millions of Americans. And not all their products are cheap knock-offs.

Oh I see...doesn't matter who someone associates with or what he does, or what a union does illegal or not, as long as it benefits the union members. I can see why Obama is not a concern to you.

Wonder how much Google is getting paid
Now that Google is tracking your search of symptoms put in by those who think they might have flu, they will send that info to the government and let them know where flu outbreaks may be?   Now, of course, there will be those that think that is wonderful but those of us who do understand our privacy should be a freedom in this country, we know this is an out and out invasion of our privacy.  Google has no privacy safeguards in place, so if Google is giving the government information on things we google, as they already have, you still think your government is wonderful and looking out for you?  Google should be ashamed.......they are selling us out.   There will be more and more companies invading our privacy as the government invades more of our private lives and these companies do their bidding.......
It probably will not be paid back.
Besides, we already owe China and now more? We still need to pay back the first debt. Looks like United States will be sold soon.
I think that if you truly paid attention

to the complaints on this board, you would realize that what we are complaining about is not the fact that our money is going to government programs to help people who need it.  Most of us are upset because these government programs are being abused and misused by dishonest people who would much rather not work and be lazy just to receive government assistance.  I have no problem helping people who need it.  I think Clinton did a good thing by reforming welfare and I think it is a shame that Obama is undoing that.  Welfare is supposed to be a hand up.....not a hand out.

Not wanting to help people in need is not the issue here and I wish that you guys could understand that.  We aren't being heartless here.  We are just sick and tired of people mooching off of the government when they could work and make a living for themselves.

If the dishonest people who are abusing the system could be taken out of the welfare equation, just think of the extra money we would have to really help those in need.  Think about it.

Maybe if they ALL paid their taxes....
instead of hiding money in their freezers, offshore accounts and various tax shelters.......THEY ARE ALL GUILTY IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.
It is probably not an MT and a paid blogger. sm
They are on all the political boards. The first hint was CV. You brought up some topics that are a no-no. I know it is hard, but try to ignore and not respond to posts attacking you. People need to question. I hope people do their research and there is some discussion on these topics. It is crucial that everyone understand the monetary system.
He was paid, the firm wasn't. SM
Either way, he could have said no and he didn't.  Mind you, I have a limitation on what I think gay rights should extend to, but I won't go into that here because I will get slaughtered.
He paid with his own earnings? Oh how awful.
And what was your point? Wouldn't you tend to trust a candidate more who paid for his campaign with his own money, rather than taking bribes from special interests that he has to pay back later by stealing more freedom and cash from you?

And if your point was that his take on the case was so high that he could finance a whole campaign with it, again, so? - A jury of your peers made that award and likely you would have too had you been on the jury and had a chance to hear the facts. If he had been representing you in a case in which your child was disemboweled by a defective piece of equipment which the manufacturers knew full well tended to disembowel children but they sold it to you anyway, would you think the jury awarded too much or the lawyer might get paid too much?

Or instead of actually thinking about the need to have lawyers represent people who have been egregiously harmed by incompetent and negligent companies, and the need to have juries hear the facts and make appropriate awards when justified, is it just easier to nod at the bullcrap propaganda which says you don't NEED to be protected because look how much money the lawyer makes?

When it's your turn you're going to want that lawyer and you're going to want that jury to hear your story. So what is the problem you have with holding villains accountable and seeing other people get the settlements they deserve?
Yeah, I forgot, he never paid
*No child left behind* either....remember that...Yeah, silly me, he would never do that. My sincere apologies....javascript:editor_insertHTML('text','');
javascript:editor_insertHTML('text','');
again...as usual...paid no attention...
The taking one more shot post appeared LONG before your cease fire....you just had not seen it yet. But it would not have mattered. I didn't read this latest diatribe...too tired and really don't give a darn. And I will give you a clue dear, one of those 4-letter words...I did not say the GOP then does not resemble the GOP now....in fact I agree whole-heartedly. The GOP has turned into Democrat lite. Which is why I don't belong to the grand old party anymore. Only register as Repub in primary years because if I didn't, I couldn't vote, and I want to have a say, no matter how small. You should really ask questions before you jump off the deep end...but you don't care, because you are always right, aren't you? Speaking from that high horse of moral authority. You must have the word "bigot" in your shortcuts, you sure invoke it enough. LOL. Really too bad that just you typing it here doesn't make it true....or maybe it is, the gospel according to Globetrotter....LOL geezzz.
If we were being paid bloated wages, maybe, but
if they want to go any lower than they already have gone (I had a truly insulting offer a few weeks back of 0.0625 cpl with 30 years experience), I say let India have it. MTSOs need to be going in the opposite direction and MTs might want to look into unionization themselves. Peronally, I think we are also worth $28/hr and do not consider that to be an exorbitant for MTs or for auto workers, given the COL. JMHO.
I paid attention and I ain't even republican
Now that your hope for racist remarks have no doubt been proven unfounded, you gotta start grasping at anything you can find, because those "racial" remarks were really all the democrats had going for them. Those mean 'ole republicans.

Are you really so racist that you don't think a black man may actually like McCain instead of Obama? Are you that deluded in your thoughts?

I have several black neighbors and they have made it quite clear they will never vote for Obama. They work their butts off and don't believe anyone has the right to their money!
