Pro-war....

In Reply to: My question to pro-war Americans...sm - Democrat

First, let me please say again...I am no pro-war.  I don't think anyone in their right mind is pro-war.  However, if this country is in danger and is attacked as we were on 9-11, I am definitely in favor of PROactiveness to see that it does not happen again.  I am of the opinion that had we acted against the multiple acts of terrorism that occurred prior to 9-11, we might have been able to head off 9-11.  Yes, I sincerely believe that.  I don't believe that trying to sit quiet in the corner while someone whacks at the door with a ball bat is a good thing...because eventually they knock the door down, and then something like 9-11 happens.  But I digress from your original question.

I am not pro-war.  I supported engaging Iraq and I still support it.  I do believe there were mistakes made in the administration of the war, but there are mistakes made in every war.  I think one of the biggest mistakes was not changing the leadership in Iraq a long time ago.  Lincoln had to fire a lot of generals before he got to Grant.  When he got to Grant, the tide turned and the Union army finally started fighting to win.  That being said...as to the question about supporting the soldiers but not supporting their mission...it my mind, and in the minds of all the military personnel I know, that is impossible.  They are there to perform a job, their mission.  They are invested in succeeding.  They want to WIN.  They know that every protest, every sniping remark made by an American citizen or worse American politician enheartens and emboldens the enemy THEY must face every day.  It is difficult when your own countrymen, who you are laying it on the line for, embolden the enemy and make your job harder and even more dangerous.

I have said it here before and I will say it again...you have every right to not be in agreement with the war for whatever reasons (which we could debate ad nauseam, because I believe and have posted here several pieces of proof that Hussein and Al-Qaeda (in the form of Zarqawi) had an association long before 9-11, and certainly Iraq has financed terrorism for years)....but, again, you have the right to disagree.  That is one of the things our military is fighting to preserve.  However, I have also always said, to write to your congressmen and women as you say you have, but in the public I believe when your country is at war you should be supportive of the effort.  When the men and women are home and safe, there will be plenty of time to castigate the administration and whoever else you wish to castigate.

Let me say this...even if you do not go to funerals and yell Your son died for nothing! ... for those who have lost loved ones in any conflict, to have the American people constantly yammering about how it is based on a lie, they were sent there for a lie, what they are doing is wrong, yada yada....the message, though not said straight away...is the same.  Basically telling them their loved ones died in vain or are in harm's way for no good reason.  And I don't think sending that message whether directly or indirectly is supportive.
