Although Boehner and virtually all House Republicans are expected to vote against the measure today, the West Chester Republican pledged to continue to work with Obama to improve the stimulus measure as it moves through Congress during the next few weeks.
In a clear bid to attract GOP support, Obama met privately with House Republicans and later with Senate Republicans.
Obama told reporters he hopes "we can all put politics aside and do the American people's business." Boehner said, "We both share the sincere belief that we have to have a plan that works."
Analysts say the polite exchanges between Obama and Boehner are part of competing strategies by the White House and House GOP lawmakers. Obama, they say, wants to win approval of his stimulus bill with the support of as many Republicans as possible. Boehner appears to be offering Obama that chance if the White House includes more tax cuts in the the package.
By doing so, analysts say, Boehner and his top GOP allies hope to drive a wedge between Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., whose allies wrote the House version and who has opposed additional tax cuts.
House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, of Virginia, articulated the Republican strategy yesterday, saying, "House Democrats have completely ignored the president's call for bipartisan cooperation." The bill that reaches the floor today is "a catch-all of traditional pet programs and more government," he said.
