There's no doubt that Arlen Specter moved to the Democratic party because he wanted to win and knows that the Republican party is poison.

But more than that and much more importantly, Specter cares about the prosperity of people, not corporations.  He wants to see healthcare for all in the USA, not just the very poor and the very rich.  He wants to see more emphasis on science, not religion.  He cares about the environment.  In short, he IS a Democrat, so it only makes sense that he change to the party that cares about the average American.

Regardless of which party Martin Luther King belonged to, I remember RFK relaying the sad news of his assassination to a very large group of African-Americans during the midst of riots in this country.  It took a Democrat to do that because much of the racism that is alive and well today in America was even stronger during King's lifetime, and it came from the Republican party, much as it still does today.

I hope more reasonably minded moderate Republicans make the move to the Democratic party.  To be associated with the likes of Michelle Bachmann, Mitch McConnell, Michael Steele, Judd Gregg, John Boehner, Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter, etc. must be quite embarrassing these days for moderate Republicans.

This country must move forward in order to achieve some very important goals.  The Republicans are like three-year-olds, stomping their feet in the ground and repeating their mantra of "No" at every opportunity they have.  They're wasting space in Washington.

Obama has tried to reach out to the Republicans.  He nominated Republican Judd Gregg as his Commerce Secretary, and Gregg accepted, only to reneg on his commitment later.  I guess the heat in the Republican kitchen got too hot for him to handle, and he didn't want to be ridiculed as Specter is being treated now.

How angry were the Republicans when Lieberman switched from Democratic to Independent (in name only -- really a Republican)?

To be fair, I know there are a few loose cannons on the Democratic side, as well, but for the most part, those who want what is best for the average people in this country -- not corporations and the richest of the rich -- belong to the Democratic party.

So many people on this board defend the Republican party, and it doesn't even represent what it did a long time ago, so I have to ask if they even know what it is they're defending.  They defend Bush constantly, and he was the biggest spender of all Republicans in recent history.  He did a lot to make the rich even richer while thumbing his nose at average, everyday hard-working Americans.  We are still paying for his wars.  Obama inherited Bush's mess -- all of it.  Bush was the biggest failure in recent history (maybe all of history).  Obama is trying his best, yet some people (just a few percentagewise) refuse to even give him a chance.

People all over this country are so tired of the hatefulness and bitterness of the Congressional Republicans.   Those who follow that hatefulness and bitterness on this board aren't even close to representing the majority of people in this country.

Welcome home, Arlen.  This Pennsylvanian will be proud to vote for you.  Thank you for your valiant service with the Republican party, but they're just too insane to deal with any more.
