Your dad....

After I read your post, the part about your dad's situation just stuck with me. I can relate on a couple of levels with his dilemma. I've been unemployed for a couple of months now and even though I can probably get another MT job without much of a problem, the burn-out I have after more than 33 years, the outsourcing situation, plunging wages and general lack of motivation to jump back in to the jaws of the lion and make myself miserable is making it very difficult for me to find my footing and take the next step. So far, the only thing I have done is to submit a couple of applications on-line for in-house jobs at local hospitals (there are many where I live) where I can still use the terminology skills and remote background I have in MD office settings, but I will be the first to admit that my heart's not in it. I would love to make a change, especially since I believe I will be like your dad and will continue to work in some capacity past retirement age.

A couple of questions. Where does your dad live? What was his last job and what sort of job history did he have before he lost his job? He sounds like he keeps himself pretty active, but does he have any significant health issues that may impact his job search? Does he have any computer skills?

I'm asking because there are a few sites where he can go on line for various kinds of "virtual assistant" and consulting placements. I don't know a lot about them, but my concept is that they are sort of like temporary contract jobs. Pay is not that great, but I have seen a few advertised that pay in the $15 to $20 dollar per hour range. Also, there is an AARP program that he may find useful that helps out with retraining, updating skills and job placement that targets low income or unemployed seniors. You don't have to be a member to participate in that program. Here's that link.
