In Reply to: Wikipedia says... - Kendra

"Deviance describes actions or behaviors that violate cultural norms..."

For such a short passage, this is filled with questionable language. "Violate" - utterly loaded, no accident that it shares a root with "violent," & I'm guessing no further accident that this is why it appeals to you.

"Norms" - Why don't we just say that anyone who is not white is racially deviant? We know that the word "deviant" is equally loaded, but this suits your mindset, otherwise you wouldn't have quoted it.

Since when is Wikipedia some be-all end-all??? It's written by anyone who wants to contribute. Worse than Google in some regards, because at least with Google you get to see what publications you are dealing with and to do further research into the legitimacy or political bias. If you really wanted to use benign language, you would say sexually "different" or whatever - but the fact that you use a word like "deviant" tells more about Kendra than it tells me about gayness or deviance or anything else.

"It seems to me that gay people are sexual deviants. Cultural norms for sexual behavior dictate woman + man."

For goodness' sake, Kendra, you act like this is some kind of law! "Cultural norms" are obviously fluid, otherwise we wouldn't now have a black president. You are taking "norm" and thinking "normal." Big mistake. Norm just means typical, as in statistically, but we know that "normal" has a lot of overtones of "correct" -- at least in this culture. Sure, statistically there are fewer gays than straights. So? There are fewer women than men on the planet. Shall we call women gender-deviant? Good grief.
