Subject: I thought MPJ could apply to either carpal or tarsal... sm

In my abbreviations book metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal are both listed under MPJ. Like you, when they dictate MPJ and it needs to be expanded, I have both codes mcpj and mtpj to avoid an error.

have a productive day!

Tarsal makes sense, though pronator isn't part of it
Subject: Tarsal makes sense, though pronator isn't part of it

He could be just leaving out the "pronator" part. I wish you could hear this guy. If he were taking you out to a romantic candlelit dinner at an expensive restaurant, his accent would make you melt.  But as a dictator, he sucks.

sub-1st metatarsal. good question!
Subject: sub-1st metatarsal. good question!

Doc means below the 1st metatarsal bone, so you have to put the "sub" at the very beginning of the whole thing (not 1st submetatarsal).

Use a hyphen, sub-1st, because sub- is a prefix not a word.

Subject: orthopedics--type of shoe--tarsal? Harstal? Harshall? Partial?

As you can see, I am really reaching for this one.  This is a type of shoe that is worn when someone has an ankle fracture. I'm thinking it could be "tarsal shoe" but then it almost sounds like "Harstel shoe" or something else entirely. I need an expert on shoe types and/or orthopedics to help me!

I had a blank on a podiatry exam that my QA filled in like this...

"would recommended a modified Weil osteotomy to decompress the joint along with opening up and cleaning up any osteophytes and possibly a colectomy of the second metatarsophalangeal joint."

I had a blank where the word colectomy is.  I've never heard of a colectomy of the MTP joint.  I did a search but didn't find anything.  I'd like to document it if it exists.
