It's spelled "welt," also known as "wheal." "Welting area" sounds awkward, but if that's what he said, it's what he said.

To find terms that begin with a "wuh" sound, look under both "w" and "wh." Check for all possible vowel sounds following those, i.e., "wa," "we," "wi," "wo," "wu," "wha," "whe," "whi," "who," and "whu." Obviously, some of them won't pan out, but if you skim down the dictionary in all those areas, you may find what you need. A systematic search often saves time.

You can use this same technique with electronic references, using wildcards. Try seeing if you can find "w*ting" or "w*t."
