I know they use balloon-tipped catheters in central venous pressure monitoring via the IJV...that's all I can think of...could he just be saying "tipped balloon"?

Frankly, I've never quite understood the use of "pan." It's supposed to be a prefix meaning "entire or all," but have heard it used when that just doesn't fit.
