I guess it can be either then. Stedman's Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Words lists it both ways, near syncope and near-syncope!

P.S. I just noticed something interesting. BOS-2 pg 98 has beta-blocker but then pg 198 has beta blocker and instructs not to use a hyphen with "beta" words.
