This is a new dictator for me and he says the same thing in almost every dictation.  He is stressing the AFFENDING - kind of like to let you know that it's an "A" and not "O"..

Subject: just to keep us on our toes (thumbs?)...it's BOTH! :) sm

Opposition is the motion wherein the tip of the thumb comes into contact with the tip of any other digit on the same hand. If the thumb contacts any other portion of a digit, it is referred to as apposition. Humans are probably the only primates that can truly oppose their thumbs.

Also, later she states: We will try wtih S/L *fungal pincher* and then follow up in six weeks.

Any help on either of these is appreciated!

to me...it would sound better if it was *there ARE cerumen impactions bilaterally which are removed.* Since bilateral already denotes plural, I, personally would use the plural form. JMO.

Subject: i mean, if bilateral is before is it singular and sm

how do you hand bilaterally.  I am very confused on the singular and plural regarding these because doctors say it both ways.

For example, examination of the hip, knee, and ankle is normal bilaterally...singular.

So, is it always singular when you use these words? or an equivalent (left and right lower extremity or extremities, etc)

I have been doing this for 3 months but this seems to keep coming up and i am hearing it dictated both ways.  Thanks ahead of time for any help :)

Only one mastectomy is being performed each on the right and left side. The same thing for bilateral tubal ligation, you would not put bilateral tubal ligations. If a person had four breasts and two were being removed from each side, then it would be bilateral mastectomies!

Okay, doc keeps correcting me when I correct his dictation, stating bilateral knees, bilateral breasts, etc. to bilateral knee, bilateral breast - am I wrong?  It seems redundant his way.  He said today bilateral eyes but it seems to type bilateral eye is just weird.  Would you type just eyes or bilateral eye or bilateral eyes?  Thanks,

use of bilateral with pleural forms
Subject: use of bilateral with pleural forms

That's always ben a puzzle to me too, but I think that either way might be acceptable. The qualifying adjective (bilateral) suggests an "augmentation" was performed on both sides, and more often than not, MDs will dictate singular nouns following bilateral. Sometimes, though, if it sounds strange, I will use the pleural, i.e., one of my docs says "bilateral lower extremity" which I change to extremities. Would be interested in further input or if AAMT has a directive on this.
for example, doc dictated bilateral tibea and sm
Subject: for example, doc dictated bilateral tibea and sm

i have heard "cornea and iris of both eyes" instead of corneas and irises of both eyes.  I am just looking for some kind of general rule to know what to do because i find that the doctors now even less about grammar than i do LOL  i am unsure if a doctor is talking about something plural like both eyes or both extremities of bilateral if what you are talking about should be made plural or singular.  Does that make sense?  I am sorry....complicated question.
