Type the 1. and then hit Control T (hold control button and hit the letter T). Then hit Tab. The text will wrap and then indent itself under the first line of text, not under the #1.

Each successive numbered item will indent in the same manner. When you finish the first item, hit enter, and type 2. at the beginning of the line, then just hit tab. all text will indent.

When you finish your list, you will want to "backspace" at the beginning of the next line to stop indenting for the subsequent paragraphs.

You can look up "hanging paragraphs" in the help menu for their explanations, which might be better than mine. I actually turned off the MS Word automatic numbering feature because I don't like it!
