I have to agree with OP. I have several relatives/friends in the medical field...sm

doctors as well as nurses...my mother is a nurse...and they all rotate weekends.

I agree why can't we rotate weekends like everyone else. I have been working Sunday through Thursday for years and frankly I'm a little tired of it but this is what I'm asked to work so I do.

JMO...

And I have asked to rotate weekends but the supes just won't agree to it...I'm starting to think it's too much of a scheduling nightmare for them to try and remember who works when and that it's just easier this way.

True - but OSI promotes friends & relatives
when there are clearly more experienced, capable people who only want a chance to do something more. OSi usually has the person they want lined up already but only post the job to make it look like they have open job post. You are the kind of manager everybody would like to work for. Thank you for your comments.
I am 30 years old and have been in the medical field since
I was 19.  My first 3 years I worked as a certified medical assistant and then I fell into transcription and I have 8 years of experience as an MT.  Can I ask why all the personal questions, not that I mind answering?
The field of medical transcription

Why isn't there anything that we can do as transcriptionists to make our profession stable again?  I take this career seriously because I NEED full-time work.  There are so many companies out there that are using this forum to really take advantage of the members here and elsewhere.  I recently interviewed for a company who actually had the audacity to expect me to work for a week before being put on the payroll, and this was after extensive testing.  I have over 20+ years in this industry and thought that I had seen it all.  This encounter  nearly created a hardship because I would have had to give up another position.  When you apply for a TRANSCRIPTION job, unless discussed prior, you should be given a Transcriptionist job and not have editing at 4 cpl be given as your put up or get out.

Just my opinion, but I believe that MTStars should screen their employers before allowing them to post.  The content and frustration seen in the posts can attest to that.  We are real people who need to have an income.  If I was doing this for just extra money or wanted to be home with my kids it would be another story.  But this a matter of survival here.

Thanks for listening!

Medical Transcription Field

Thank you for your response.  I have found that when a name of the company is mentioned in a negative way, the post disappears.  I am not a newbie at this, in fact, I worked for one of the major companies who actually tried to recruit me (for extra time after my QA job) to search the board to find out if any current MTs were complaining, etc.  I, of course, refused and luckily did not suffer any repercussions because of it.  I feel that this board is valuable and should not be abused, but you must be careful whose name you mention and in what way.  I am beginning to feel it is a never-ending battle to stay employed in this field with some of the stunts some are pulling.  A recent one was a degree in medical transcription?  I guess there possibly is such a thing now, but what are the rest of us experienced MTs supposed to do - lay down and die?  Where I live the majority of major hospitals including the one I currently work for are either outsourcing or cutting wages down, so many of us fall victim.

Thank you for just letting me have my say.

10 total years in the medical field, 8 as a MT.nm

Identity theft is a big in the medical field. nm

Usually on visiting doc's office, they ask if I am in the medical field because
I can speak right along with them on most they say, don’t have to have it put in laymen's terms. I do not say I am but am asked if not in the medical field, countless times.
My mom was a lab tech, so I grew up knowing about working holidays in the medical field sm

so it is no big deal to me.  I do not have any children, so I have pretty much always volunteered to work the holidays so that others can be with their families.  As someone pointed out, when you work at home for the holiday, you can jump off and on whenever you want, so it does not really feel so much like working.

Sorry that you are unhappy about it, but unfortunately, people still get sick on the holidays, and part of being in the medical profession is accepting that you will work some holidays.

Hope the New Year brings you lots of things to be happy about.

Well, I agree and have other MT friends

and have enlightened each other ad nauseum.  I don't think that I am just sitting around complaining, as I tried to be proactive in my situation and they DIDN'T want to hear from me, and DIDN'T care.  I got the boot.  There were others waiting to take my place - someone who is willing to be degraded and doesn't care, and management doesn't have to get my pesky e-mails.

As far as a large group of MT's standing up and fighting for ourselves, that would be great!  Where do I sign up?

Medical field is 24/7 work unless you work for a clinic or stand alone operation.
I just look at the other cool people working holidays and weekends in the ICU, ER, paramedics, and am glad to be there. When you work in a hospital for a length of time, it becomes a necessary evil to show up at the worst possible times.

Having a family or a life you'd miss from Friday at 5 PM to Monday at 8 PM must be hard and

I think that there is a place for you where they can meet your requirements (M-F). There are plenty of those jobs.
I totally agree re medical report format.
x
I agree. As medical insurance biller/coder/transcriptionist
I agree with the other poster. You're better off going with a group plan than on your own. Largely, because you pay the same premiums across the board as everyone else on your plan. When your on your own individual plan, I was scared to use my or have a new diagnosis because come renewal time, your premiums are adapt to go up staggering and there is nothing to can do about it, other than drop them and then you are in a worst situation. Yes, group insurance premiums usually go up every year but it's nothing like what will happen to if your on your own. Also, you do get a contracted adjustment based on your insurance's contracted allowable rate. Say your visit is $100 and the contracted rate/allowable through the insurance is $75, that means the doctor has to write off that $25 according to their contract.
Friends
Says you.
I have friends who are still there and (sm)
are hating it more and more everyday.  They are already putting out feelers for other companies and ask me how I like my new job.  It's like day and night from SmartMed.
What? My friends?
Because of my good buddies, I don't have to pay any taxes. That makes them my bestest friends. As I trot around the globe on the backs of the working class, I'll flush the commode while flying over your state just to say a BIG HELLO!
Friends
.
Yea, try almost 60!!!! And my friends say I should go
:(
try All Type. I have quite a few friends who
work for them part time and have raved about them.
If they were very close friends, yes I would let them know. sm
However, I would be very tactful in doing so. Maybe give them a hint to start looking for another company or job that you have some inside information...etc. If they don't get the hint, then just tell them.

Chances are the company may know this is coming and didn't tell the MTs. Most companies know when their contracts are up for bid or they are given 30-90 day notice the hospital dropping them. So, if the owners of the company do not have the common courtesy to let their MTs know, shame on them! It happens all the time in the corporate world.

Little bit of advice - do not get into gossipy detail, he said, she said. Just do it with diplomacy.

Good luck whatever you decide.
new friends - Winefred
Wow, thanks girls!  I had a lot of response and appreciate it.  Looking forward to chatting with all of you. Go TTer's!!
I used to be best friends with my boss (sm)
and let me tell you, there is always some guilt that goes along with your friend asking you to give up your weekends, time off, whatever, to work.  I loved her dearly as a friend, but I don't seek out boss/employee friend relationships any more for this very reason.
Supportive? Yes! If we were friends...however,

My Friends are Happy
Not true, I got a few friends working at ATSI and they are getting better packages and salaries than most other companies and are quite happy there and they got plenty of work with salaries on time!
wow! one of my best friends is currently at Grady
He was admitted on Tuesday, still not discharged.  I'll have to call him to see if he is aware of this dilemma.
Transcriptionist friends
To NM: The server wouldn't let me email you. I would love to have a fellow transcription friend!
I have several friends who are in bankruptcy
right now, mostly from the shenanigans over at Medquist. My dearest friend was so embarrassed and ashamed and felt it was a dishonorable thing to do. She had her back against the wall (she lost her house too, it was foreclosed) and I told her there is nothing dishonorable about falling on hard times. Perhaps all of the people who judge those who are having a tough go of it ought to remember that they have not walked in others' shoes.
i had the same happend to me..not once but twice AND..I reccommended two friends and they had the
same issues.  There are happy people there..I won't discount that..but certain accounts have some very poor leads and the whole company suffers for it.  I never got an ID..I had to use 2 or 3 others that belonged to people who were off.  When I refused to do that the second time..I had no job.  To each their own.  This board in particular deletes any negative about KS.
I have friends who used to work for FN and moved on. sm
FN has more than their share of ESLs and you very well know it.  You are not only snippy, as someone said, you are condescending and misleading.
Good for you!!! Me too!! And I tell all my family and friends

I spoke to a clinic that is/was using it.  They said it was the worst thing they had ever seen.  You could actually have a rash on your face, but by the time the machine *reaches* out for the nearest sounding word, you may end up with some dread disease.  And face it, nobody but nobody has time to READ EVERY REPORT FOR ACCURACY AND CORRECTNESS this day and time. Well, by golly, come to think of it, that's what MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONISTS USED TO DO, before we were replaced by machines that can't spell or know a toenail from a hangnail in the grand scheme of things.

I'm like you, the first time I find something in my reports, they will hear from my lawyer.  I won't even waste the time being on hold, calling the hospital or doctor.

Hey, I have India-American friends
They came here and became Americans, so please don't call them dot-heads. The difference in them is that they live here and observe the same standards we do and have to pay bills at the same rates do. I have no problem with them.

I understand the anger, but the real anger shouldn't be at them, but at our own countrymen who advocate it and sell out their own people. There's a fine line between profit and sleaze and shamless greed, and they've crossed it. Some hospitals are strongly against it and they need to start investigating and prosecuting those who trick them, IMO. There are security risks regardless how well software is made. Patient names, dictated S.S. numbers, etc. It's creepy, if you ask me. Anyone can jot the stuff down and they would not be accountable to an American court.

As long as Americans tolerate it, it will continue. Most aren't even aware of it and when you tell them, they're shocked and angry.

does anyone have legal friends to help get us started?
nm
When I talk to family and friends about this,
jakj;ldkj;dl
I have a couple of friends who work for them.
I can find out.  Anyway, from what I gather you can pick your own hours.  They do like for you to work 1 weekend out of the month and they do pay extra for that.  The friend that works for them full-time is sounding more like she is regretting it because she is on an account with bad dictators and she is have way too much trouble getting her lines in.  She says she has to work long hours just to be able to pay for her insurance.  I was just talking to one their part-time employee today.  He was talking about an ER account he was on and he seemed okay with it.  Another girl at our office looked into it for part-time work and she said they were very unorganized and they did not deliver her what they promised.  Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
For Scribbles and his/her union friends

If you really want to know how to form a union, check out the link below for the AFL/CIO.  You'll need to pick a union with which to affiliate.  They have a list with contacts.  They also have state/local federations of labor with contacts.  You'll also need a professional union organizer to help you.  There's a form you can fill out to get in touch with one.

SEIU split from the AFL/CIO and is a healthcare union.  Find a web page for a local in your area, and they can give you the same information as above.

These are the people who can really answer your questions and help you.  I'm betting, though, that you just want stay on these boards to stir the pot and whine.

Or the gain of their friends and suckups. They don't
buddies do. Or else they could care less and let people pick and choose as they please so what's the difference. Some get the cream while the others get the crap.
Need experienced input here from my friends....sm
I have started work with a lovely, growing company, the owners/managers are extremely lovely, helpful, flexible bosses, and my main account is a Surgical Center, which I love.  The line rate is good, but here is my quandry....I can only get paid once a month, at the end of the month, and with a family of five, we really need that bi-weekly check, the budget is just too tight.  Does anyone else get paid this way, or am I being totally stupid....pay is by GROSS LINE, a line is a line, 8.5????  Thanks in advance for everyone's opinion!
Getting out of this field -
It's just a matter of time before my company sends works oversees, and I REFUSE to correct Indian, Irish, Phiillipino, or any other foreigners work for half my pay.  It's just a matter of time before this all blows up.  Let them figure it out.  If they want us Americans back - they will have to PAY big time!  I'm looking into another field as well.
I'm obviously in the field too...
I've never seen all of these so-called problems you are talking about and I do plenty of those same reports everyday as well.  Slippage occurs when someone with a Lap-Band decides to eat so much they force themselves to vomit.  It's extremely rare.  I'm willing to take the risks rather than be morbidly obese and hardly living as it is.
I don't think it's just this field

I think it's human nature.  I used to hang out on the General Hospital board on ABC.com (I'm a soap opera geek) and it amazed me at how nasty some of those women would be to other posters who weren't quite up to snuff.  I've seen all out board wars develop.  If it was a full moon and I was PMSing, I enjoyed the spectacle, but most of the time I got a little disgusted with them.  Don't even get me started on how nasty it got before the election.

I do get surprised at some of the negativity that is posted here, but I can understand how it's hard to be really super positive in today's world.

You know what's going on in this field, right?
This is how MTSOs are going to squeeze ALL American MTs out of the field. We are an 'unnecessary' expense for them. They don't care about quality transcription. They care about driving quality cars and living in quality homes in quality neighborhoods. And who cares about the client, and screw the worker. The sooner they can price us out of the field, the sooner they can ALL go 100% to India.

If they do that, I think it should be mandatory that they, TOO, must leave the U.S. Set up their godforsaken offices in INDIA, and move there themselves. It's a travesty to our country that these MAGGOTS feel they even deserve to live here.
Not them but CorT bounced my friends 3 checks. nm
.
Had many friends in the QA dept who all left about the same time.
AND...yes, I do believe them!
I had a couple friends work for her OMG she is HORRIBLE!!
She is new to running a company (within the last couple years) and is pretty clueless. She just isnt cut out to do it. I ended up hiring one of her MTs that she thought was awful and is one of my best editors. Quite ridiculous really. I would steer as far away as you possibly can. If you DO decide to work for her, do NOT quit the job you have or you will end up in a bad situation. Very few stay with her. Just honest words and hopefully helpful info. Sorry to slam on her so bad and I really do not like doiing that to companies, but she is honestly the most hateful and incompent MTSO I have EVER heard of.
So you can believe an anonymous person who is friends with the owner
when they say it isn't so, but you believe an anonymous poster who says they are losing the account?  If you have concerns call the company.  You've come here many times in the past and griped about this company.  You have the right to do so, but you're still with the company.   Could it be that they are one of the best companies out there, not perfect, but better than most?
Or Arbonne. I am now hiding from friends and family
who think Arbonne will make them rich. I don't want to sell anything. I don't want to buy anything I can't afford. They are starting to scare me, like some sort of comestic zombies in Day of the Dead or something.
I have worked for both -- still have friends at Precyse and find
them both to be about the same as far as consistency in work. Usually if I'm running low, then they are too. However, Precyse has the better platform IMO.
I have at least 5 friends who have gone to school and then quit because it was hard!
nm
My friends don't even extend 'girls' night out'
they know I'll turn down the invitation due to lack of funds for dinner out. The only outing I've had ALL summer was an evening at the art museum, and that's only because one friend is a member, and got me in free on their membership pass.
So that it narrows down the field when they look into

It really shouldn't be that hard to find out which female MLS started 4 months ago with 15 years experience and is making 10 cpl, since 10 cpl is NOT a normal starting wage at Transcend.  You are aware that discussing your wages is ground for termination, right?  You really have to be careful when trying to get those referral bonuses that you give accurate information.

That is the problem with the MT field...

Everyone is always bickering and knows it all.  I am by no means a recruiter.  I was just reading the posts, had been there myself, and thought I would offer some friendly advice, but some people think they know everything and try to discourage others from something good.  Sad world today.  Sad people.

Disgrace to the whole field!
