6 apps, 4 offers, 1 "interested" but too late, and 1 No-Show

In Reply to: Who Has Gotten a New Job in the Last 30-90 Days? - curious

I'm going to be carrying 2 part-time jobs that don't quite add up to 40 hours. I'm hoping I can handle the increase in hours physically. The new one will be IC status, and if it works out that I can get production equivalent to the 2 jobs from that 1 job, then I MIGHT leave the first job.

From what I saw in my whole 5 days of job-hunting, there are literally DOZENS of services looking for MTs right now, and they are offering a range of jobs - good, bad, and ugly.

I'll report back in a month or two to the rest of your question because I can't tell yet how the new company will be to work for.

I have not filled out a single application in years that didn't request permission for a credit check. Scary, huh?
Normally very fast hiring process; however, they are flooded with apps right now. nm

Too little, too late? It is never too late. I am one person, true, but together

Let me tell what this ONE person achieved on her own and then you can imagine what many of us can do if we stand together.

Two years ago, I was working as an MT for a local hospital.  One day, we were told that our overflow was going to be outsourced to one of the nationals, just the discharge summaries and not even all of those.  Two months after they told us that lie, they called is in one by one and fired us because they were outsourcing the entire dept because it was cost effective.  The service they were using was a very large national who I happened to know had a reputation of offshoring.  And I just knew because our little hospital had easy as pie dictators with maybe 4 out of a staff of 200 that were ESL, our work would most definitely be one of the accounts offshored.

I was angry!  Oh, they offered us jobs at the service and told us we would definitely be working on our hospital, but I'm no fool and I knew it would be a matter of time before we were forced to take secondary accounts which would eventually become our primary accounts and our little hospital would just disappear from our queues.

I refused the job with the service on moral grounds.  I refused to work for a company that offshored.  And then I decided to channel my anger and outrage into something proactive.  I wrote letters to every newspaper in my area.  Every small farming community newspaper this hospital served, and the big city newspaper in the big city close by.  I never dreamed that anyone would pay attention at one woman's rantings.  But a funny thing happened.  My letter was printed in more than one of the papers I sent it to, and reporter from one of the larger newspapers called me and asked if I would do an interview.  I said absolutely.

Long story short, they did the interview and then interviewed the administrator of the hospital.  They put him in the hot seat and asked him about offshoring health information to India.  He had no definitive answers to give except that he would have to look at the contract and make sure that it was stipulated that his hospital's work was not sent over seas.

It was a small triumph, but I took some satisfaction in it.  Two weeks after that and just when I thought all the hoopla had died on my little letter, another letter appeared in the newspaper -- from an HIM director at another local hospital who said as a result of reading my letter and interview, that she had received a number of calls from concerned people asking if their medical information was being sent and transcribed overseas.  She wanted to write the letter just to set the record straight that her hospital employed their own MTs and did not outsource to a service nor did they offshore any of their work to third-world countries.

And I'm still not done.  Still a few weeks later another letter in the big city paper was printed from another HIM director assuring the community that her hospital employed its own American MTs and did not outsource or offshore.

Now, everything has quieted down since then, but I managed to ruffle some feathers and make a point, and if I (one person, one middle-aged work-at-home mother of two) can cause that much ruckus -- think what a whole bunch of us can do.

I think we, as a group, need to take control of our industry and our career destiny and do something.  Maybe march on Washington DC protesting the offshoring of American jobs -- not just ours, but ALL American jobs that are being offshored.  There are more Americans out of work and losing work to third-world countries and corporate greed than just MTs!  Our government needs to hear our voices!  We need to MAKE ourselves be heard!

Instead of sitting back and pasting little smiley faces in our posts and saying good luck with that we need to come together.  There is no room for MTs willing to accept lower wages, no room for MTs whose hearts bleed for our third-world counterparts, and no room for MTs who want to sit back and do nothing, but reap the benefits when the strong win the battle.  We've reached a critical turning point and it's time to take up the cause and change the future.

That is what I say too, don't tell me, show me. nm

No, this just goes to show yet another MT

Pay attention.  The OP said she was promised a call on Monday and it is now Wednesday.  I don't see where your comments are even close to what the OP is trying to put forth.

Another post a while back stated they received a canned text e-mail.  How unprofessional is that?  If they want to advertise, then they should respond to all applicants no matter what.  Let's be grownups now!

Sad, isn't it. Just goes to show that

ALL companies are out to pocket profit from MTs anymore. No longer is the watching out for their employees (and I'm talking about all companies, manufacturing, etc., not just TT), but GREED/PROFIT is the name of the game.

Mixing VR with standard transcribing is a process that really cuts the lines, at least in my case. I'm not as flexible as I once was. Different set of rules for straight and VR specifications.

It just goes to show ya...
These people have absolutely no idea what we do, the experience and technique required to do medical documentation/transcription and the superhuman auditory prowess required to translate some of these dictators. Oh we type, so we must be clerical. We I can tell you right now that secretaries make at least $15-20.00/hr now days.

$10.00/hr, please. What an insult. If this is the case to stay in business, I suggest everyone up the food chain cut their salaries by 50%.

You know if we were organized and every MT around the U.S. checked out for 24 hours, think of the havoc! They are soooo lucky that we are not, overseas outsourcing notwithstanding.

Two offers
I jumped at the first offer because I was on a long dry spell. The next day I got another offer.  Same pay but excellent samples, directions, you name it. Better than the first company.  First company is like typing in an old DOS program, second company uses Word.  First company requires a different type pedal, second company  (I USE MY OWN). Can I do them both?
I got many offers off of here
and two other places I can't mention or my posts get deleted.
MDI -MD offers 24 hrs, I think. nm

HELP, 2 offers

on the table.

One offer is Med-Scribe, FL.  I did get offered the split shift that I prefer also.

Other offer is Medquist for more cpl.  I was offered a split shift that I am not too fond of but need split shift.

I am weighing pros and cons of each and am stuck.  Any info to help me weigh these two companies would be great......like what flexibility each has, anybody working for either, anybody happy with either?

low offers
I agree that there will always be someone willing to accept a low offer just to gain some experience. But, you get what you pay for. If a company expects quality work, we can expect quality pay for said work! The turnover rates would be a lot lower and the MTs (and MTSOs) would be a lot happier. It's a win-win situation.
250?!! Never heard of that. Most ads show 120-150 lph. nm
s
Show me the money
All their information is available on their website, www.PhoenixMedCom.com, including their cpl. For me, I'm making more money than I did at the large nationals without all the stress!
Show me the money
it's there for the taking.  Help yourself.
You also know if you show up for 8 hours
you get the same pay you were promised. We work Piece Work, backtground noise, ESL, you never know when you step on the pedal what you are going to get. Some people thrive on that, I find I cant' trust it. Some days bat out 1500 lines NO PROBLEM, the next day everything goes wrong and you get 950. There are so many variables in this business, don't compare it to a 9-5 job where you walk in, walk out. I don't mind evolution but I don't trust it right now. And I think most of the people voicing concerns are certainly professional, if not they wouldn't have STUCK WITH IT so long. And we have all been BURNT before. And most places you work UP THE LADDER, you do holidays for years and then move up. I haven't had a raise in this place for 3+ years, not because I am UNPROFESSIONAL (99% QC) but because every year they move me to a new office as they keeping EVOLVING. You get my point????
show me the humor! Show me the humor!
well, blow me down!

Because, you show up to work, sm
put aside that time to do so (as a professional would), and should have the work available.  If not, then get paid for your troubles.  It's like being on a retainer, you pay to have the person available.  Too bad it does not work this way for MTs.  Companies have the best of everything.  It is the IC who gets ripped off.
Show me the money!!
I am new to medical transcription, and was wondering how long it will take until I can support myself in this profession.  The company I am working for pays $0.08 for transcribing, and $0.04 for editing.  99% of the work I do is editing computer generated reports.  So I am earning an embarrassing $10.00 per day.  This company works with India, so don't know if that plays a part in it or not.  Thanks   Here it is Monday morning, and they don't have any work for me today.
At least you show you do have a better grasp of the

and I appreciate your sharing that insight.  Even on this site less than a year ago, the head of one of the largest offshoring MTSOs posted a message directly to me to begin dialog on this board.  The problem was that I never designated myself as the spokesperson for anyone else here on this board and was beaten about the ears rather soundly for being what others considered disrespectful towards him.  No one *got* what it was I was saying.  He is a board member of AHIMA.  He is a millionaire.  You would have thought he was god in person the way others thought we should treat him with a higher degree of respect.  I don't respect someone advocating the investment of developing land, facilities, training, and employment of more than 5000 Indians and offering some of the lowest pay in the industry in these United States.

There is a small to midsize national that has a nonorganization policy in its employee handbook.  That is just one that I know of, and I can predict that will begin to become the norm now that AHIMA and AAMT have gotten federal monies beginning to flow for education and internships for MTs...with the largest interest of these monies going to same said millionaires.  They don't want to hear how some of need food stamps, Medicaid and housing subsidies to get by on what we make in today's US-MT-less-than-friendly environment.  They blame us, not what they have done.  What is even more sad is that we have allowed it to happen by turning blind eyes.

If we want to make an impact and have a voice, each and every US MT needs to be selective about the MTSOs we choice to work for, what our wage should be, the benefits we want and decline to accept what is not acceptable.  Unfortunately because we are so splintered, we cannot collectively form a picket line and hold posters and chant.  Heck, we can't even do that in the online environment as long as there are MTs who think the millionaires deserve to be treated with respect they have NOT earned - IMHO.

I stand behind what I say, but there is only so much I can do personally.  It is up to each US MT and the new MTs coming into this business don't support this philosophy because they don't know what we do – we have to teach those who are willing to listen.

Just saw a show (can't remember which)

The show was about foreign people with false identities working under Americans' names and social security #s.

Goes to show you they do watch
the posts on here.
No Way! We show horses too
There's no way I would give it up for a job.  As you know, it's an addiction.  I am willing miss an event now and then, and try to work my schedule around the horse events, but I would not give it up entirely.  And to give up your dogs too?   I think you'd be miserable.
I think it would be a great way to show MTs
they're on our side. But, I think they get paid for those ads, so they probably get the same amount of $$ regardless of whether the advertiser is offering 6 cpl or 10 cpl. STILL, I agree that it would be nice if they could hit all those 'weeds' on the job board with a little 'Round-Up' once in a while.......
Two job offers - very undecided -

One offer from Diskriter, part time (30 hours) PTO.  They pay $12/hour for down time, including when no work is available.  The other is Landmark, a fairly new business, but the owners seem really wonderful.  Has anyone had any personal experience with either of these companies? Both are paying in the range of what I wanted.

TIA!!

IC, SE or employee? I have 3 job offers and
am not sure which way to go.  I have little if any write-offs, so I'm thinking employee.  The per line amount is the same.  The SE offer counts spaces but no headers & footers and the employee offer does not count spaces but does count headers and footers and offers W/E and night differentials.   The only real advantage I'm seeing is the greater flexibility with IC.  Any advice?  Thank you.
MDI-MD offers what you're looking for
They're awesome to work for. I'm on a super easy account, that I don't mind sharing the info on - it's for a hospital in eastern Maryland. The docs are easy, the platform is easy. I've even typed radiology for the account and couldn't believe how easy that was as well!! I have a 12 hour window, but I like getting up early and knocking out my lines in less than 6 hours! $$
I need some advice. Two job offers. sm
Job #1 is employee status/benefits, 0.07 per line, average ESL, plenty of work, great hours. Will have to buy computer and spellcheck software.

Job #2 is IC status/no benefits, 0.09 per line, no ESL,plenty of work, great hours. Will have to buy computer.

I have never been an IC.

I need some advice by those in the know. I really don't know what to do here. I do not have insurance through DH's job so it would have to be through my employer or private insurance, depending on which way I go.

Any advice by cooler heads than mine? Thank you.

Who offers BCBS?

What MT employers offer BCBS?

How is someone supposed to know who offers the best

medical benefits?  Unless you have worked for every company you don't know how one compares to the other.   If you have no pre-existing conditions and are in good health you are better off to get a private policy.  Deductible might be higher, but your premium is less and with the money you save on premium you could put money away for deductible.

If you get a private policy you aren't tied to a company because you need the insurance.

Trying to decide between offers
Morning all -  I have a dilema and would like some opinions on what you would do.  I have been offered 2 positions.  One is with a company that provides equipment pays higher, but I would be doing reports that I am not that great with and they are ESLs.  The second offer I have to provide my own equipment and will have to spend about $80 to get what I need and they pay about 2 cents per line less, but they are easier work types and not as many ESLs.  Which would you choose?  I'm sure I'll get a lot of those nasty posts I have seen lately because you think it is simple , but I do know there are a few of you out there who will not be nasty and give me your honest opinion.
I'd wait and see who offers you the job

In this economy, a lot of companies are not hiring.  While you may have applied with all of these companies, I wouldn't get my heart set on 1 until you've actually been offered the position.

With all the low pay offers - How's the PTO? see message
New job.  Earning 3-1/2 hours PTO per pay period (2 weeks), which should equate to about 2 weeks per year until the 4th year.  Only 2 sick days - period.  How does this compare?
Transcend I believe offers

I recently saw a show on TV about Wal-Mart, sm
It was one of those news shows, maybe 20/20. Whatever. It talked about Rubbermaid going down the tubes because of W-M's demands on it, how generations of families worked at one particular factory which essentially supported the town. That was closed, equipment was auctioned off. I'll never forget the expressions on the faces of the men who were watching this happening. It was tragic.

Sorry, this is badly worded, but I need to get back to work.

If you only complaint is QA telling you something different, then show them !!
However, you said the account was too difficult for you. So, I assumed you could not handle it. If the QA dept is incorrect, point it out to them and show them where they are giving you wrong info. Simple as that, if that is really all it is.
What would the control I show you that you can't see on website? (sm)

And do all companies who use Ex-Text block this function?  What does it accomplish?

Oops - didn't think my name would show up...
I'm new to these posts and wasn't sure which entry would show up where. Are there instructions on this website about how to sign up?
Don't. A search will show the many reasons why. nm
s
Sorry, the posts on this board show NOTHING about sm
overall happiness within the company. That would be validated by number of MTs leaving - which isn't a lot, as far as I can see. Just because a few people are peevish about a few issues does not mean that it is a bad company. Maybe it is you that is a bad fit, eh?
It doesn't show India's
pursuit of excellence, it only shows how bad some companies want to save a buck.
They love to show their incompetency!
If this keeps up, I just might have to change my phone number! I hate to do do that as this has been my phone number for about 7 years, and the phone company charges you like $35 to change it, but it's worth my sanity! The person who called me, after I told them that I no longer worked there, said,But your still on the schedule... I have never seen such stupidity in my life!
The IP addy doesn't show up here. Some
boards show IP addy, but this one doesn't so no way to track.  If you provide any identifying info then they might figure out who is posting.
You contiue to show how stupid you really are!
You start the post by passing judgment on previous posts, assuming of course they are all from ONE hateful person, and you decry the tone in which YOU perceive the emails to possess. Clearly, you feel that you are more intelligent, more sophisticated, happier person and who believes that YOU generally contribute more to society in a more POSITIVE way. Then, in closing, your true grey colors show-with schoolyard insults and name-calling. How trite! Well, old bag, TWO can play that game, So, Miss Happy Pants, when when the last time you left YOUR trailer park? Ooops, that was meant with the kindest of intentions, you myopic terd!
hahah THEY DONT SHOW UP
ur right she did the work.  But basically there is nothing u can do about it until the MTSO grows a conscience and decides to pay.
I loved that show (my age shows, too!)
Actually, I see the (self-proclaimed, of course) 'upper crust' more as the MAN on the Green Acres show. In the beginning, he's the one who APPEARED smarter, and who decided to get himself farm. (Not unlike some CEOs who decided to 'buy themselves an MT company...). His boa-wearing wife appeared to be the most unlikely candidate for success on the farm. But in the end, she was happy and successful because she was FLEXIBLE and learned the ways of that offbeat community and funky house (remember how careful she had to be when plugging in household appliances? Some were a '2', some were a '3', etc., and too big a number blew the electrical fuse. The hubby just never caught on.) The husband was never able to cut it, or truly be happy, because he was too RIGID. He expected things to work the way they did in New York, even though this was Hooterville, with its own unique sets of problems and ways of doing things. He was always annoyed and ranting, and his wife happily went about living with their pet pig and the other animals, the quirky house and the quirky town, because she ADAPTED, and she could COMMUNICATE without yelling at people.

I think the top brass at all MTSO companies should rent all the old Green Acres shows they can, and show them at their big fancy meetings. They could learn a lot from Hooterville's favorite, foofy, boa-wearing farmer.
Who offers direct deposit for IC?

Curious to get opinions on these offers (sm)

Have an offer for 8 cpl statutory but a mix of clinics...have an offer for 9 cpl but acute care IC.  Finally have an offer for the clinic work type I'm looking for but only 8 cpl IC.  Isn't that low for an IC?  Actually, since I don't want acute care and prefer clinics the 8 cpl stat looks better but it is with a company with a bad reputation but the other company that pays 8 cpl IC has no reputation so it is entirely unknown.  I know nobody can tell me what to do but geez I'm using to making much more than this and have an account that pays well above it actually but I want to divide my time between 2 jobs and have an easier side account to supplement my high-pay harder one.  Does 8 cpl IC sound reasonable or is this below par?  Maybe it is worth it to take less to get the work type I want?  TIA
