IMO, the COST of being a CMT (attending sm
seminars, etc., to get the required credits) was very high and far outweighed any extra pay offered, to say nothing of the time spent on it. I find that just being a really good MT will get the same pay rate. When I was a CMT, I was living and breathing MT. All vacation time and Saturday mornings were spent getting credits. The rest of the time I was working. I have a life now.
I say we protest by not attending this teleconference today!

they don't want a certain demographic
Having worked there for 3 years, I believe there's a strategy in place to weed out older MT's or people like us who have 20+ years, who expect to be paid well. They were constantly looking for ways to lower my pay or so it seemed, like account switching. I was making around $4 less an hour by the time I wised up and left. I think they prefer newbies and people with very low expectations.

I wholeheartedly agreed that the demographic look up stuff is very time consuming and we don't get paid for that. That is something the powers that be don't understand.
demographic fill-ins
Top-of-the-line platforms will fill in demogrpahic screen automatically (if docs enter right numbers in the first place), and it's wonderful. Other platforms will fill in partially, and on the ancient and/or practically obsolete ones, the MT has to fill in everything. Also, most of us don't get paid to fill out our production sheets, etc., either. When I worked in-house at 2 hospitals, we did get credit for time away from keyboard, like answering phone, filling in time cards, in-service education, etc.; they had a formula for it and it was pretty fair compensation. Buth, that was then . . .
100% QA is because of demographic issues on the (sm)
client's end that they are trying to sort out. Not because of MT quality issues.
What companies pay for demographic screen?
I am not aware of any, but have not worked for more than a few. Just curious.

You can make decent money. Maybe 20 bucks an hour. But that is if you don't do any demographic lookup and no formatting. So the report would like like this:

 In addition to their dictations from h---, how do you like working for NOTHING with all their crappy look-ups, MD name researches, demographic work done by MTs for nothing....it's part of the job, they say. Why don't the clients hire their own clerks for that garbage and pay them? But I'm sure the company gets paid for this unpaid work required of MTs...else the client wouldn't be so fussy about it if they got it for nothing. How do you like the QA feedback? Can't decipher the corrections??? Probably neither can the QA. 
I have worked for a company that is SO picky and you have to do so much demographic work
before you ever get to the report. Then you have to switch screens, take out an underscore in 2 places, change the worktype in 3 places if the doc doesn't put it in right, IM someone to look up the name for letters (which is about half my worktype), change screens again to get the billing number, paste it in, and THEN you can start the report. Ahhhhhhh!
All for 1 cent more per line than the reports I do for another place that all I have to do is enter a MRN and I'm there, in the report, and no medications, no demographics. Now one of these days I am going to be brave and just switch altogether to this company.

I wasn't productive on MeriT. Too much time spent entering demographic information...
There is no roster to pull patient names from, so you have to type what the docs say, and those ER docs speak at lightening speed. I spent more time trying to get the patient name right than I did typing the report. I really, really hated that.

I transcribed for Compuscribe years ago. Had no problems, just low pay but no problems.

Maybe the people aren't still there, but they're experiences weren't good. Companies don't change that radically. If there are problems like that, it's because of major philosophical problems in the company. If after reading those posts you'd still want to pursue testing with them, well, all I can say is good luck. I'm sure we'll be hearing from you later.

Thank you. It's $2.50 per pay page on a sliding scale. I do not really understand it and that's why I do not really know what questions to ask. Thanks for the input.

To me it there are too many variables to quote a per page rate, font size, margins, etc. You can have anywhere from 50 to 66 lines for full page depending on margins and font, so at .012 per line, that is quite a difference. Also what do you do for 20 or 30 lines, as they could both be half a page? That is just my opinion though. Could work in your favor and could not. If they use a small Arial 10 font, takes a lot more lines to fill up a page than Courier 12.
I Get $2.75 per page
I type for an insurance company doing claim tapes and I charge by the page. It works out well for me. I type in Tahoma 10. Even if a page is just one line long I get paid the full rate.

How on earth do you charge by the page? I have never been paid by the page but only by the line. Luckily, I found the job through the local paper and they will let me work from home (only 5 minutes away). There is a big psychiatric hospital down there street. Thanks for all of your help. I about gave up on transcription.

I, along with others, have elabored myself on MDI, which is probably on next page now.
It is a great company that will do everything they can to take care of the MT. They have a positive QA team, etc. Personally i think they are the best company around.

My original post was in regards to Bayou MT's comment that we are not paid to look up doctor's names, unfamiliar names, terminology, etc.
P.S. I've run into the same QA types. The absolute worse was one from YOG. She actually called me on the phone and put me down.

Yes, I thought it was very low, too. And she pointed out that you make the $1.00 page if you are very good. I thought that was hilarious. It was like she meant to convey that only the very top transcriptionists could ever hope to attain that job with such an exhorbitant amount of money as $1.00 per page! I had to hang up quickly before I laughed out loud! No hard feelings with them, though, and I wasn't all that insulted. I wish them well. They just don't have clue about how to hire quality transcriptionists and pay them well. Of course, that problem is a common one in this industry, but they just seem to have even less of a clue than most companies about paying us properly for quality work.

Listen, I have done work both ways. By the page, you cannot get cheated. I have been cheated by line counters. I got $2.50, $2.75 and $3.00 a page. I would not go below $2.50, but you will make money this way. It's awesome! I congratulate you.
per page/per line
I know of MTs that charge $2 per page and make good money but I would question if you are cheating yourself especially with a report that is very long. This may benefit a MT who is typing a lot of short reports. I would prefer being paid per line when transcribing lengthy reports just for the fact that you are paid for every single character and space. But, I would prefer being paid per page when transcribing many short reports because of the time its take to enter in patient information in each report, which slows down productivity. So, base your decision on what you are transcribing and other factors.
