wow, very shocked.
I live in NYC and have lived in various other cities, and having to deal with nonpayment can be a pain. Sending a letter from your attorney is a long drawn out way to try to receive payment. You can call the local court system (I'm not sure if the CALLSTREET is in Brooklyn or Manhattan) and find out about filling a small claims hearing. Some states allow you to do your hearing over the phone, while others let you file a claim and request you to show up. NY is great about rewarding included expenses of airline ticket reimbursement and lost wages along with the award of nonpayment. And the best part ... if they do not show up for the hearing, you automatically win, and then nonpayment following that can lead to an arrest, which is another thing that NYC courts are great about doing - arresting people for bad checks and nonpayment after judgment award. I know, I've had to have people arrested before. The money is coughed pretty quickly when they see the handcuffs!!!

I cannot believe that some of you are blaming us for staying with Heartland for the length of time we have.  We are all in this together and you never know when the floor is going to drop out from underneath you. For the past year Heartland had been treating us very well,  uping the line rate, etc and assuring us that even though the company was for sale it would not affect us. Unfortunately we had not been updated and so we were all in complete shock the the ax fell Monday. Please do not blame us for doing the AMERICAN thing and doing our jobs.
I'd be shocked if you pay over 9 cpl for

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?? I’M SHOCKED!!

Call me ignorant with the MT business lately as I do not get on here very often but I am shocked about the topic on here yesterday and the day before about a company who in the past year has little to no work unless you get on at 2 am or whatever.  I have also read about other companies who also over hire.  I am under the impression that these are large companies right?  I always knew that most of the larger companies scam you on income but did not know that they are now making you sit by the computer 24 hours a day competing with one another for work!!  I don’t know anymore with these huge corporations.  It sounds like from what I am reading on here it has gotten a lot worse.

You guys, we as MTs cannot allow these companies to get away with this for crying out loud or it will stay this way!  I have never settled for lack of work and never will.  I have always worked 6-7 hours on the same schedule I need for me and expect there to be work when I start my day, no exceptions.  I would be a wreck not knowing what my income was going to be each month.  I need to know obviously to pay the bills but also so my husband and I can plan financial goals, trips, or whatever ya know?

I did have one experience with this slow to no work crap but this was different because she was small and just starting up her company plus she was very disorganized so I lost confidence in her.  I really wanted to work for her because I was interested in the kind of account she had.  She also paid me 10 cents gross so I wanted to test the waters and see if I liked the account.  I was scared though because I had only been an MT for about a year and a half or so at the time; this was about the 2000/2001 timeframe and I was not sure what to expect as I had only worked for one company at that point.  Thank God I did not leave my first job before seeing what this one would be like!!  Plus I loved it too, mainly ERs.  I miss doing ERs.  Anyway, the very first day that I started I got on at my usual time of 7 am and there was no work, I mean nada!!  I called her and was told it would be picking up in 2 weeks or so but she also said that it did not usually pick up anyway until 8:30 or so.  My heart sunk.  At that point I realized it was not going to work for me and was mad that she did not tell me this beforehand because I told her the hours I was working.  The present company I was working for wanted the work back by 2:30 in the afternoon which was perfect for me because I wanted to be done by then anyway and rested up before my daughter came home from school.  I told myself I would give her the 2 weeks.  Well they went by and still no different so I called her again and at that point my patience was gone.  I said I could not work for her.  She got irate with me!!  I was in shock.  I did not understand why and felt confused.  I politely told her that I could not talk to her if she was going to communicate that way.  She did not calm down so I said that I needed to get off the phone now and that was the end of that.  I was not sure if she was even going to pay me but thankfully she did even though it was a small amount, haha.

How can you work for a company that does not give you the peace of mind of knowing that you make a good living and are financially secure?  I mean can you imagine our society commuting to work everyday only to be told that part of the 8 hours you are there for will be unpaid since there is not enough work to fill up the day?  Isn’t that the same thing as getting up for work at home and there being no work or only enough to make a horrible line count??  Not to mention having to sit there waiting for a report to trickle in or getting on several times in a 24 hour period??  Other types of jobs that pay only on production and not hours don’t do that to their employees.  They need them!!  They don’t have their employees just sitting around doing nothing for 8 hours or maybe give them only a half days’ work.  I mean can you imagine how long a person would stay there??  Not long!!  Our economy would come to a screeching halt if all companies operated the way some of these large MTSOs do.  So why do some MTs accept this and then say that we who expect more and won’t settle for less either somehow we don’t exist and that we are lying, or we are cherry pickers, or lazy not to work the more difficult accounts, or our attitudes are bad, etc.  I suspect the people who respond negatively to MTs like me are the ones who do not make good money in this profession or who settle for a work environment not conducive to making a good line count, and so frankly I feel you are the ones who are lazy and the ones with the wrong attitude because to me it is based on a negative self-defeating way of thinking to settle.  You are settling to being a typing slave for 8 full hours and letting the big companies suck up your line rate.  You do not put the time and energy into finding a better job so these companies have people like you who will work for them.  So they will continue to exist because of it and drive the line rates down or make them stagnant like they have been for the past 10 years.  I am not saying this to criticize but it is the truth and the truth may hurt sometimes but that is how we grow.  I look at people who do better than me as someone to learn from, not criticize.  I would not grow if I was not open to new ideas and had a negative attitude.

First off I know of no 100% perfect account.  I do not think they exist.  I do ESLs just like everybody else but not 80%, nothing near that!!  I did an account with at least 50% ESLs and still did the same amount of lines per hour by getting used to the accent and fixing their grammar in a timely manner.  It was a small to medium-sized hospital as well so you could actually learn them!!  I will admit that these were Asians, not usually the Indian dialects.  For whatever reason I have never mastered the difficult Indian dialects.  I just don’t have the ear for it.  Some people can and I am glad there are people out there who have that ability because I sure as heck don’t.  It took me a couple of months to master the Korean, Vietnamese, and Chinese dialects, etc. because they are the worst when it comes to grammar.  You practically have to retype the whole line all over again; that actually happened quite often, haha.  On top of that this account was a 75 character line!!  I was paid gross lines by this company but yet my account could not take advantage of that and was also in paragraph format so I literally lost 10 characters per line.  I still made 365-385 lines an hour on it because it feels just like any other account because once you get used to them it is no big deal.  You fly through them and you do it practically in your sleep after awhile.  My mind always wanders off thinking about other things until that moment when you screech the brakes on and your wandering mind instantly comes back to trained ear mode, backing up, slowing it down if need be, you know the drill.  That still is my average no matter where I go except for 2 companies I tried and they lasted 1 to 2 days.  This was before I started a list to go over with each interview.  Most of the platforms I keep hearing are awful and impossible to get good lines with.

These companies and the way they operate just sound illegal to me.  I mean how can it be legal to hire someone for a FT position for a certain shift and then not give them the work on a continual basis, not on and off scraps.  I just don’t understand how they can get away with it legally.

The companies I have worked for want to keep their MTs busy so they as owners get their piece of the pie too!  I have always worked from 7 am to 2 or 3 PM, did my 2000 lines for the day, and then had a life.  I also will never work the one weekend day per week deal that I see these companies expecting in their ads.  I did however work every other weekend once but when they advertised they said the position was every weekend.  I told them I cannot work every weekend and they obliged.  That was the second company I worked for.  I don't waste my time bouncing from company to company hoping it will work out either.  You can find all that out in your interview.  I made a Word file when I decided to leave the every other weekend company because I wanted my full weekends back.  I listed the questions I needed to know and if they were unwilling to accommodate my needs I moved on.  There are plenty of companies out there to choose from who still respect their MTs.  How can you ever leave town for a regular weekend or 3 day weekend if you are stuck working?  Don’t settle for every weekend.  At least tell them every other.  I don’t know.  Obviously it is up to you and everyone is different.  I just can't imagine living that way.

I guess if I had no choice but to work one weekend day every week, I would have to take my laptop with me and sit half of my (I repeat my) weekend in the hotel room and try and enjoy the beautiful sunshine and waves crashing down on the beach from afar.

I am not an IC either by the way although I was for the first company and loved it because of how much you can write off, like half of your 1099!!  There are advantages to both depending on your life situation at the time.  I however took the second job because at that point I needed medical insurance and the place I am at now as well.....

You may be shocked, but most of us SM
aren't.  Whether it's MQ or any other company, they have no compassion or care for anyone working for them.
I'm shocked. How come you didn't
how much you don't care and that it doesn't make any difference to you? Maybe nobody takes you seriously for the simple fact that your posts have no credibility.
Ask them who they have doing payroll for such a big company. You'd be shocked. nm
.
When I open my mail I am shocked to see so many
mailnotes from my company looking for help!  Do they think all we do is sit at our desks and wait for work?  Where are they when I log on and there is NOT work ---- for days?
You're shocked and embarrassed that your employees
do a million lines per month?  Why, is that bad?  Should they be doing more lines, or should you be paying them more per line?  Wouldn't using Dragon Naturally Speaking get rid of a few of your employees?  It doesn't take nearly as long to edit as it does to type and proof.  Do your employees use text expanders?  What are you really asking here?  The gist of what I'm getting is that you want to make more money.
Half the employees didn't take it? I'm shocked.
xx
From someone who bothered sending a resume, I take it back. I'm shocked at the immaturity
level that is going on. There is no way I would even think of accepting a job that would have a recruiter who acts as you have on here. I'm pretty sure you burned all of your bridges. I feel for the companies who hired you to represent them. How proud they must be..NOT.. Wow..
i proofed a few reports from a filapino and i was shocked at the good quality. wasn't expecting
;
If you'll read through past posts you'll find lots of
recent info.  Why do you need menitoring if you already work as an MT.  Unless you do clinic work most companies will require you to work at least one weekend day, at least initially.
If you'll read the archives you'll find out everything
you want to know, none of it good.
Probably figure you'll want Way more than they'll offer, whatever it might be. :) nm

If you'll read more carefully you'll see
I was referring to AFTER she's missed out on a job, having a friend do sort of an audit to tell her what what was wrong with her test she submitted -- not cheating.
I'll take that hat!
Take ur hat off to me cuz I work at MedQuist, have plenty of work and make a lot of money - and they do leave me alone which is kewl. Been with 'em for 8 years too!
hey, it's ya'll

Yu'll
No, no, no, it's Yu'll for "you will"
I think you'll like VR
I work for MDI on the eScription VR platform, good accounts, good pay, and I need team mates to help with the backlog of work (I'm on 2nd shift). I highly recommend it. I have been on VR for 3 years and have found it more profitable than straight transcription, and much easier on the wrists/hands.
now I'll be looking for one
because I think the hours thing (except so they have an idea of when you work to regulate work flow) is bull.
I'll try.. sm
I am happy at OSi. I've been with them for two years now. I've been doing well with them. My main account was a little low on work over the summer, but is back to being pretty busy. Even when it was low, I had my backups. I've been there long enough and have worked on enough accounts that I can grab backup work from several different accounts but usually don't need it. We use the Extext platform and I love it. The best part of it is being able to pull up samples, past reports, etc. That is what helped me move into being able to do op notes which I hadn't done before but now do plenty of. On my main account, I barely have any ESL and the few I do are very easy. I've worked on VA and there are a few more ESL on those, but only a few were very difficult. To compensate, you are allowed a couple of blanks on those anyway, and like I said, when you can pull up other reports for these dictators, it helps a lot anyway. Compared to what I see in some of the job ads, I feel I'm compensated pretty well. There are frequently incentives offered. For the most part, I'm left alone to work and am not bugged. I'm able to do above my 12,000, lines per pay period and also work as an IC with another company to boot. I am paid by direct deposit on time, every time. Never ever a problem with that. The couple of times there has been a problem with my check, say an incentive having been left off or something like that, I've had a manual check cut and in the mail right away. Hopefully this post will be allowed to stay and won't be overrun by those that weren't happy at OSi, but I couldn't be happier there.
You'll get it ----

It won't be the correct amount, but you'll eventually get it.  I'm outta there.  Today was my last day.

Thanks. I'll do that. NM
o
You'll never know if you don't try.
I would just go for it. Make sure though that you are checking and double checking everything, and look up anything you don't know for sure. This will take a while but eventually you'll get used to the job and you'll be glad you tried it. Good luck.
I'll bet
and you've never made a typo?
I'll 3rd IT

Allstate Transcription started a mentoring program that is very much needed in our industry, and I am pleased to say that I have been a team player for two or three months now!  In this program, Deb, the owner, gives people who have gone through some kind of course an opportunity to work on real accounts with real TATs.  In addition, she provides MEGA feedback with all kinds of documentation to sites for the interns to read.  Deb nor the editors can make anyone do anything.  The intern has to WANT to learn more and improve and has to have the capacity of breaking a habit of doing things their way versus the AAMT BOS way.  Deb will do flips backwards just to help someone succeed with multiple second chances.  In the real world, if you can't produce an accuracy of 98% and above, you will be terminated.  In Deb's defense, she cannot continue to allow a person who is not progressing to fill a slot when she has others begging to get into the program.  It seems that everyone here has a clear understanding of the bigger picture ~ producing 98% accurate work to a client so that they can provide the BEST care to the patient - afterall, it is the patient whose well-being is at stake here.   Carla

I'll try them both. Thanks.:)

Thanks - I'll try that! - nm

I'll second that!!!
The reason I work for my current company is that they keep all work in the US! I am so glad that I found them!
I'll bet that you do.

You'll never see
10 cpl from MQ even if you truly, truly deserve it.
I'll second that
at least animals are honest about their dishonesty.
I'll second that!
I was hired by Cymed in the fall of 2005, and it really wasn't a very bad place to work, although not the absolute best, but then SPi bought them out in the summer of 2006, and the changes REALLY became evident in the fall of 2006. I started running out of work more and more each day, the account managers were constantly changing, my pay checks started getting screwed up (they stopped paying me my second shift differential that I always got with CyMed), and the office staff was just plain RUDE. I finally got completely fed up and left back in February 2007 and went to Keystrokes and have been 1,000 times happier!
i'll second all of that!
x
I'll second that!
Love, love, love it there! Never been so happy with a job before!
thank you, I'll try it!!

I'll bet this is TT

Nah, you'll probably have to pay THEM
.
It won't fly. I still don't believe they'll ever
so many hospitals and doctors don't even know what a CMT is or have never heard of AAMT or whatever they call themselves these days. Why would any sane person push for forced credentialing when it doesn't even increase our pay rates? You'll never gain any extra esteem in the eyes of physicians unless you actually have M.D. after your name. If they ever find a way to implement this (which I highly doubt), I will cease to MT, not because I am incapable of receiving credentials, but because it is completely ridiculous. Yet one more way to force liability on the MT where it should never exist, too. Any MT who falls for this has obviously been brainwashed by AAMT, the organization that changed its name because it had MT in it! They aren't for us in the least so please wake up to that fact. They have and will continue to harm MT more than they will ever advance it. The only ones capable of changing this industry are the individual MTs by not accepting BS, either from pseudo-organizations, MTSOs, or clients. End of story.
I'll tell you what I know sm
They always pay on time every 2 weeks (26 times a year). Reasonable benefits after 90 days if you maintain 11K lines and 80 hours per pay period. QA people are wonderful. Tech support is supreme. Management is nice, polite, available.

The way to be happy at TT is work something other than 8-5 and to agree to having a primary and at least 1 or 2 secondaries. An attitude that work is work and it has to be done, might as well be you, works very well. Being punctual and consistently working your shift will go a long way for you too.

I love it and will continue to stick with it.

I'll just bet MDI
would love to talk to you if you have the experience in acute care they require. Go to mditrans.com for more info. They are great to work for.
Thanks...I'll try that...n/m
x
not all they say- I'll say!
The reason why you can't get any work after 10 pm. is because the supervisors who are scheduled to work into the late evening and early a.m. aren't on and do not send the work to the MT's. Operations will tell you that they are on all night, but they are not, and everyone knows it. You will only be hired for midnight shifts even though there is plenty of M-F, 9-5 work available (they same those for fav's). You will never get a schedule change, regardless of the promises. Your personal situation will never be considered. All of the execuitves are convinced that every MT is stealing from them and they will ALWAYS be treated like dirt. They are convinced that they pay the highest in the industry when studies have shown that they are in the lower 40% of pay. This is what a company is like when you scummy people running it.
You'll fit right in...
at MedQuist. Why not give them a try?
If you want the best, you'll have to pay for it.
That's just it. Many MTs aren't the best and expect to be paid for it.

I'm a little surprised that you are only now, as an IC, dictating what your rate is. That's what IC is... INDEPENDENT contractor. What took you so long?
I think you'll like it...

It was easy to learn and not too time consuming before entering the actual report screen.

I'm not sure what I'll do...

They are supposed to call me today. I already work for MED-Scribe of Utah and, although I really like it, I would love to do clinic work and have holidays and weekends free. MED-Scribe has been really nice and helpful so far. Everyone is nice, and I have not run into anyone that is rude. I see a lot of complaints with MTs that have run into rude behavior from companies. I've not had that with MED-Scribe. My only complaint with MED-Scribe is that the communication dept. can be lacking at times. Other than that, it has been fine. It is very full time, though. It was my first job offer, and I took it. Some of the posts about ZyloMed from back in 2006 are very discouraging, but I wonder if things are better there now. Even though I would prefer strictly clinic work, I don't want to make a decision I would regret with a bad company.

I had training on Emdat when I tested with On-Time Transcription. It is very time consuming to fill in all of the info. I can see where Maryann makes a good point about the line count. It would take a lot of time to fill in all the demographics.

Now I'm not sure what to do! I suppose it would depend on how much they offer. I absolutely love Urology! (Sigh!)

And I'll bet they pay
about two rupees a day, ya think?
Thanks-I'll have to seriously look into that nm

they'll get around to it

Maybe your name is out of place in the Rolodex. My suggestion?  Just lay low and see how long you dodge the bullet
