Oh let me tell you, they know how to pass the drug tests! (sm)

One woman I worked with was talking about how to use "Yellow Root" to "beat" the drug test! (that's what she said, "beat" the drug test) They know all of the tricks of the trade. One company stopped using the urine drug test and now they use the hair strand drug test, so I don't know what they use to "beat" that one (I guess they pull the strands out of somebody else's hair!) :-)

    Easy tests versus harder tests...
Having passed both and offered jobs at both, which company would you likely go for?  They both have the same basic benefits and line rates.  Would I be assuming that the harder testing will mean that the dictation is more difficult?  Any opinions on this would be greatly appreciated!
SURE WE HAVE TO KNOW IF A DRUG IS.....s/m
BRAND OR GENERIC! WE WILL KNOW A F T E R WE LOOKED IT UP!
We HAVE to do this to know if it is capped or not capped.

And we HAVE to look up a lot more!
Even if the doctor dictates 'mg', and we are not 100% sure that it is 'mg', we have to make sure that it is 'mg' and not 'mcg'!
    And much more!
I'd like to know about the drug test thing too.

Do they really make you take a drug test?

They also require a drug test.

Actually it goes even further back than the drug scene
This was a term meaning to start a fight, getting a fight on, older than the drug scene of even the 60s.
the drug thing happened with Kforce too
a couple of travelers that I personally knew were transporting drugs through rental cars, i.e. leaving one state and driving back to their home state to pick up drugs. One traveler actually had crystal meth Fed Ex'd directly to the hospital! The dealer got caught and the traveler was fired of course, but get this -- the traveler always managed to pass the drug tests!
I think they require drug testing, they pay, but a pain to have to go through that. nm
    .
Drug testing is different because drugs are illegal and sm
Physicals are required for certain jobs......like firefighter, where a certain agility is needed. Also they are given agility tests.

Office jobs do not need to know your medical history.
Yes, I was told that you had to have a drug test and background check.

hey I've typed that ER before! drug addicts adn crazies! nm

Had a conversation similar to this at the drug store today
One of the ladies behind the pharmacy counter talking about raising kids. I was telling her what a wonderful life now that the kids are grown and out. I guess you can say this matronly woman is having the time of her life. I have good money coming in, in fact now getting in more than my union husband does each month, travel when I want and those golden years. Now I know where that saying comes from. This is the best years of my life right now. The pharmacy person asked me did I not miss those years with the children. I told her did I miss struggling? Heck no. Did I miss the yah, yah, yah, again heck no. Ladies you just do not know what you are missing if not, as you call it, a matron.
Don't forget a drug reference. I like my Quick Look that is installed on my 'puter.

I can totally understand a drug test and criminal background check, but...sm
personally I don't feel you can always judge the caliber of an employee based on a credit report. I know plenty of people who are the salt of the earth, of high moral standing and work ethic that may have encountered a unfortunate circumstance, i.e. job loss, car accident, excessive medical bills, that may have put a blemish on their credit report. They should not be discriminated against.

However, I do see where a credit report would be necessary for a position of relevance. I just don't see the justification for an at-home IC who is using their own equipment, paying their own taxes, etc. to have to submit this information.

I'll use my own situation as an example. A few years back my husband accrued an excessive amount of medical bills and I was unemployed because my job was outsourced. We were late on a few bills and are trying to rebuild our score so that we can get a good interest rate on a home. Every time that score is pulled, it drops a few points. We have worked very hard to rebuild this score just to have it drop because a company wants to know personal/private information. We as MTs are supposed to respect the privacy of patients and have HIPAA drilled into us daily. I feel my personal information should be respected as well. A criminal background check isn't personal information, but necessary for the safety of all involved.
They do require urine drug testing for sure, no matter what accounts you work on, theirs or a hospit
    .
    Actually, I did pass it.
And if you read my entire post, I mentioned the need for continuing ed credits, which I would only need if I PASSED THE TEST.

At a certain point, either you know this job or you don't.  So someone with TONS (20+ years) of experience does not necessarily do a better job than someone with 6 years' worth.
    Pass

The software doesnt keep accurate track of your time or lines.  I even kept a log, didnt matter.  I accrued time off that I was not given or paid for when I left.   You can check the archives for many of the same types of issues and stories.

    Take a pass.

One of the lowest paying around for employee, not much better for IC.  Not reliable for steady work either.

Oh, I can pass it, all right....
I just seem to always be missing a little pocket change to take it.

Oh, really now, I'll be honest. It's never been the highest priority to me because (a) my employer doesn't care, has never cared, and won't give me more money for having one, (b) When I have that much money at any one time, it usually goes to buy back to school clothes or an appliance breaks down and has to be replaced.

I personally know quite a few CMTs and admire them for their dedication to keeping it current. I have always thought it rather telling, though, that most of the AAMT members and CMTs of my acquaintance are childless.

The fact of the matter is, many MTs are mothers. And mothers usually put themselves last. Right or wrong, that's a fact.
I think I will pass on this one myself. nm

I am trying not to pass out as well, but (sm)
I believe she was right when she said this is across the board, no matter where you work.  The health care crisis in this country is just that - a crisis.  I will stay here and pay the increased premium as from talking to people who work in different occupations as well as MT, they are all complaining about increases.
LOL - Maybe you should pass his
a leg to stand on for ICs to collect unemployment.  They'd be beating down his door.
This too will pass and you will have
    your board back.
    What about IQ tests?
    start doing....!
    Take other tests
There are lots of MTSOs that have online tests through MTtest.
    sorry....not sure about any tests
Someone just mentioned something about a test. I just had to say that I was never offered a test. I DO NOT like tests either. I do great on employment, but get extremely nervous with tests...lol. Sorry if it made you nervous.
    tests
Phoenix Medcom has new and improved voice files for testing.
    tests
I just tooked the tests and not at all what is being described so the tests must have been updated recently.
    Tests
I refuse to test for a company until I have received some background. Your're right some of those tests are quite extensive and I refuse to spend 2 or more hours on a test to find out they only want to pay 7 cpl and have lousy benefits. Funny thing is, when I want to inquire further before taking a test, I never get a response back from the company.
    Need help with MT tests

I have almost two years MT experience and have transcribed and edited just about everything short of pathology and radiology.  I am currently doing ER.  I tested for a national today and did well on the grammar and terminology, but not well enough for the transcription.  No direction was given for the transcription test such as to type bedtime as opposed to h.s. and daily or q.day instead of q.d. or mL for cc.  I never know whether to do those things or not do them, it seems like whatever I choose to do is always wrong whenever I take an MT test anymore.  I could not even slow down any of the dictators for clarity.  I need to find a better paying MT job.

What would you do for prohibited abbreviations?

Also, would you expand or not expand for diagnoses and impressions?

Would you type short physical examination sections in paragraph form with the headings or would you list them individually under the section heading?  I have had clients that wanted it both ways.

Maybe I have lost my edge by doing strictly ER.  Still, I would really appreciate the thoughts of other MTs about the above questions and any other pointers anyone would like to share.

    Thanks in advance.

    TESTS
    Hi Jan:
I am a newby fresh, new blood. A post graduate from community college. Use mL in place of cc.

Am also looking for transcription work myself; do you have any leads?
    tests
Sorry to hear you failed their test. I also failed theirs and Medquists twice. I hate that they don't give you any feedback on why. No idea whether it was writter or transcription or what. Just thanks, you can reapply in so many months. I really think they should give some feedback, don't you?
    I don't think anyone tests with MDI-MD
I could be mistaken, but I work for MDI-MD and there was no formal test required. Instead, they review your resume, see if they have a 'fit' for you, and then there is an extensive phone interview where they assess you skills and go over your experience with you.

I've seen several MTs post to this same experience, so I don't believe they have any formal testing at their site or elsewhere.

    I think I'll pass.....

    I'd Pass On Transolutions...
if I were you. I believe they base your pay rate per line on how well your score on the test you take when you go to their site. Whatever level you fall into based upon your test scores is what you will get paid. Say you got a low to average score on your test, you would probably fall into pay level I and get paid 5 or 6 cents a line or something like that, and $10 an hour for 1-2 months of training. They're basically just like every other company out there offering transcriptionists the oppportunity to work at home crappy pay, not the best dictators, and of course, if you run out of work, you never get paid for downtime. You are also REQUIRED to work two holidays and weekends.
I will pass that along to the Administrator. Thank you. (NM)
    Goldbird
Pass on the job. I am thinking it is a co I used
to work for and they never paid on time even with that long wait and did not get it right either. No excuse for a wait like that except for mismanagement by the company. Pass on that job. You will have headaches you don't need.
How did MT pass QA in the first place?
    nm
Sad Rad MT...I was going to pass along this same message to you...Lee said that
everyone would be called about any issues they e-mailed her about!  Good Luck!
    I'll pass on them then.
    x  x
Seven cpl WITHOUT spaces?!! No way ... I'd pass, but that's just me. nm
    Good luck
I interviewed but took a pass
The pay was lower than I was willing to take at 0.775 with 8 years experience in heme/onc
If you think your office won't pass SM
muster, don't feel like cleaning, whatever, I'd just get a pic of an office off the web and send that.
    Thanks wouldn't want to pass

    Poll: Take or pass

After reading posts below here's the situation: IC at company presently for a while which has lots of work. Decided to take E-Trans plus for security of employee position. Husband provides benefits. After reading warnings below:

    1.  Take and try out anyway, despite the negative feedback.

    2.  Keep IC job and do as much as possible, as it has not been a problem there and no need to stir the pot.

Just confused and seeking feedback since new information has popped up on the board. I am like the newhire below and do not want to waste time if job no good! Thanks in advance for your advice.

Sure, and pass the bill on...
to who exactly?  The consumer?  The American people who are already being ripped off when it comes to healthcare?  Some of you just want more and more and more, but you have no clue as to where this mystery money will come from.
Any MTs here who pass over job ads that require

I have never seen this discussed on the board and was wondering if it was just me?

I cannot imagine having to sacrifice either every single Saturday or every single Sunday?  My daughter is involved in various sports throughout the year that meet/play on Saturdays and we enjoy attending church together as a family on Sundays.  How do you pick between your kid and God??  Have you noticed too that this rigid schedule seems to be more prevalent  with the MTSOs that provide the better benefit packages...figure.

Whatever happened to the good ole days of weekend rotations? I don't think these particular MTSOs even realize what they are asking a person to give up.  I know this business is 24/7, but weekend rotations make a huge difference!  Of course the majority of these particular MTSOs seem to be the larger nationals ran by salary paid suits that clock out every Friday at 5:00.

Please note that I realize that we are living one of the worst economic eras in history and if it meant feeding my kid or being off on weekends, this wouldn't be an issue.  This has been going on for years.

Oh well, I guess if there are that many MTs willing to give up having a life, these MTSOs have no incentive to make any changes.

I would really be interested in seeing what everyone else thinks.

    Easy tests
Nope, you can't go by that. In fact, you can't go by anything but your own experience. Make your wisest decision. Use your gut instincts. That's all any of us can do.

It might help others to answer if you named the companies, but I understand why you can't.

    Good luck. :)
I though the tests were very fair sm
and although not simple, they weren't extremely hard and certainly much better than some I have taken. The actual verbal, I thought, was the easiest. By the way, definitions ARE a MAJOR part of transcription ability. Sounds like you are sore at the company for not getting the position.
    TESTS UPDATED
All tests for Phoenix Medcom have been updated as of 7/26/2006
    Long tests
I was thinking the exact same thing!  LOL! I once took an enormously long test that was in my specialty and I knew it was good.  Never got the courtesy of a reply.  Soured me on tests.
