There is an old saying that never attribute to malice what can be attributed to stupidity and I can only hope that it is just the function of being naive that causes people to save reports. Having worked for legal departments of large hospitals, I can tell you that this is a violation of HIPAA, of local laws, likely of hospital bylaws (or of the bylaws of the corporate entities that make up most medical practices these days) and that whoever is doing this is shooting themself in the foot. (As well a the pocketbook if they have to retain legal counsel to defend them in an invasion of privacy suit.) I really hope that people doing this will reconsider what they are doing. THINK, people!
