I think they like to hire ICs because they can use them only if there is an overflow of work and don't have to worry if they sit there all day with no work. Been there and done it. Then they call on Sunday afternoon and ask you to help them out. They don't handle the payroll taxes and don't contribute to SS at all. I don't mind the no benefits thing because I accept that part-time people probably don't get benefits anywhere, but companies are doing it more and more. It's just good insurance for them to know they have people waiting on the sidelines for work. Put me in, coach. I will never again work with that status.
