company asking for cc of SS card and driver's license

I have been offered a position with a company and got the application/paperwork in the mail.  They are requesting a copy of my SS card and my driver's license.  I have never had these requested before.  Also, I would appreciate if anyone has any info to share on Meridian.

Thanks!

Driver's seat-Make it you!

Listen, this industry can only do what WE let them do people.  I finally got tired of spending my time to test only to get no response or such a low ball offer that I wouldn't even have considered it anyway, so I put ME in the driver's seat.  I am a CMT and have over 25 years MT/QA experience, so guess what-I tell THEM what I am going to do or not do. I had 2 job interviews this morning, BEFORE testing, and turned both down as soon as I heard the offer, much to the interviewers dismay and surprise.  Look, if the majority of people don't test without getting the specifics of the job first, then they can't require that.  If you are getting low ball starting pay and crap hours, if the majority don't accept it, they can't do it.  It works much like a Union, majority rules.  If they can find people to do the job at slave wages and crap hours, they will do it!  What are some not getting about this.  We are the experts, we say what we do!

I DO NOT test until I am contacted by phone by a company representative, NOT EMAIL, PHONE, which I state on my resume.  Listen, I might not even be interested once I hear what the pay/hours are, therefore why waste my time. We must make them respect us for what we are good at, AND without MTs/QAs they don't make any money.

It is time for US to tell THEM what we will do or not do!  Think about it when you are frantically sending out resumes all over cyberspace and taking tests that require YOUR time.  Demand some respect for what you know and do and stop being bullied!

How do these MT schools get away with saying you can make $40,000 per year. That is a fake
advertisement and should be banned!
Is that where they make those press-on fake fingernails?

Where'd you get your info? Husband made 63,000+ as a truck driver. nm

2-3 cpl for VR? No way. You wouldn't even make
minimum wage. VR is a ripoff, and they keep trying to lower the pay for it until they have us all working for minimum wage. Top-heavy greedy corporations have ruined what used to be a good industry.
Probably wouldn't make a difference. sm
They put my line rate in writing in my offer letter, and did a bait and switch later. Buh-bye gross line rate and accounts, hello new rate and new accounts. I did the math and it didn't come out right. I sent them email about it, and they didn't make it right. Rather than take them to court, I quit.
I wouldn't make that assumption...
It might not be that the poster is using her time unwisely, it could simply be she has drawn the proverbial short straw and has nothing but horrid dictators who probably shouldn't be in a voice recognition program.

I love the Escription program too and never had a problem with it, but I was sufficiently lucky to have a pretty decent group of dictators whose style of dictating worked well within the voice recognition system.

I don't think all MTs have such luxury, though.

I'm giving the poster the benefit of the doubt on this one...If I'm wrong, you're perfectly welcome to say you were right, Janet :-).
I wouldn't be so quick to make that assumption.
Administrations change, some contracts post date that event. People forget.
Wouldn't stand for that crud! Like you said, you can't make

Re the new hires of 40-50 MTs, wouldn't it make more sense
to cross-train the existing MTs who are begging for work on the new accounts since they're already here and familiar with MDI, and then if the accounts they are currently on that don't have enough work pick up, to then hire new MTs to replace them?  Why hire 40-50 new MTs when so many are looking for work?  They will have to train on the current accounts where people are already scrounging for work.  I thought the owner told people it would pick up once the last 32 that were training on their accounts went to the new account.  Has that still not happened?  If it has, why is there still no work?  If it hasn't, how will it be any better once they move on to the new account if 40-50 new ones are brought on?  The problem will remain the same, will it not?
Hate to be a slave driver, but

Our apologies for letting her out.  She has no sense of humor.

License agreement
How about paying for the license agreement for the software that is needed?
No license needed
You don't need a license to be IC.  You can pay your taxes quarterly or in April.  If you just pay once a year in April you will obviously owe a big amount at one time.  I have an accountant and he recommends that I pay quarterly but its up to you.  You can deduct a bunch of things; workspace (your office), any reference materials you buy, internet, and even a portion of your electric bill.
A bus driver the other day said, "maybe I should do that, I've been wanting some sm

extra money.  Sheesh.  I have just gotten to the point I do not say anything.  Granted, it is not brain surgery, but just being able to type and access the internet does not mean you can sit down and instantly be a transcriptionist, but I do not waste my breath trying to explain anymore.  Back LONG before the days of HIPAA and all that, my niece said she thought she would do this (same mind set, it is just typing, etc), so I sent her home with a cassette from one of the doctors at my clinic.  She brought it back the next day and told me no thanks, but she did have a new respect for what I do after that.

Now, I'm thinking maybe I should be a bus driver because I need some extra money.  Aaah, how life turns  ...

The things you list I can already do and without a license
to operate as a company. Never had a business license. I would think a business means you hire others, correct or not? Read on her 1 person who tried getting license and then was asked to jump through all kinds of hoops filling out fax forms and, asking about her employees! I have written off all things connected with my working for home for years including the space of my office, a percentage of the utilies, etc. I think a company stating you have to have established business in order to be independent is a ploy for a company just so they can have you be an employee and play a scare tactic with you.
It they don't have a license to do business in that state, then they cannot hire.

The initials DO stand out, just like vanity license plates.
to get the same jobs that the rest of us have just to look fancy.
Well, it's not fake by any means but it is not
realistic for new MTs.
Are you saying only fake companies
Where ever would you get that idea?  I think there are real companies that use FTP sites and Word.  I work for a real company that uses FTP and Word.  Not all companies use platforms.  In my opinion platforms can be easily manipulated by the company for line count whereas Word is much more accurate.  I have tried some of these so-called MT friendly platforms and I think they cheat you of lines and are to strictly benefit the company and are not MT friendly at all.  They also bog your computer down.
Who said she used a fake resume?
She could have used a valid resume, yet applied and accepted jobs with several employers.

I do QA for a very large MTSO and I think there are LOTS of people who apply with fake resumes. Many of the reports that I see from many new hires are horrendous...no way they took their own test.
that is why i use a fake hotmail...sm
or make up disposable emails for this type of thing.
Hmmm, no OSi mgt here with fake posts?
That's because they know this is the truth and there is no defense for this!
Better fake flames on an internet forum, than
real flames from something such as a Molotov cocktail and a match.

Venting is a GOOD thing, not a bad thing.
Agree. You can't fake experience with OPs and special procedures.
It's much better to be honest but tell them how much you want to learn & ask them to give you a chance.
I wish people wouldn't be so encouraging. Then maybe we wouldn't constantly run

OK. That's enough info. to make me decide not to pursue it for now. Thanks again. NM

At my company I'd ask for $18; probably wouldn't get it, but I wouldn't go lower. nm

Thanks for the info! Do you *feel* like you make more with a gross line v. character line? (nm)

I doubt you will make enough money in 5 hours a week to make
nm
I make 4 cents a line, work part and make
over $500 a week on part.
Great post! I make 0.085 at Keystrokes and make more than at any sm
other company in the last 5 years. Why? Because there is always work for me. I love starting work each day, knowing that the company I work for appreciates me and has plenty of work. Transtech and Keystrokes sound very similar; those of us that work for either can count our blessings that we are not part of the cesspool or huge corporate mess that makes up the biggest few companies. We do not have to worry about our jobs getting sent overseas and we see a future in this business!!!
Yeah, but we don't make what docs make. nm

I wouldn't do it again...
I was trained on one portion of an account (4 new hospitals they got), and it was GREAT! I loved it, told my husband I was SO happy working with them. Then, training ended ... I got switched to the hospital I was hired for (although no one told me that during training), and OMG - it's AWFUL. I can't make a dime. It's either all ESLs that I absolutely cannot understand (and I've been doing ESLs for a long time), or English-speaking guys that are terrible. My rate has gone down tremendously. And, if you have tech problems - you have to e-mail tech support and wait for them to respond. So, like this weekend, I have tech problems and am sitting here with my thumb up my nose waiting for a dopey teckie to get on my problem. I begged them, in an e-mail of course, to CALL me so we could resolve the problem and I could get back to work. Still waiting for that phone call, and it's been since yesterday evening. So, no $$$. About a month ago, I would have told you - GREAT place to work. Right now, I'd have to tell you to RUN AWAY!
I wouldn't do it

Diddles:

To me these things are a big red flag about a company. My reaction would be that they are very controlling and if they are trying to control your speech on the Internet there will be many worse things to come.

I believe a lot of these companies make you jump through hoops, i.e., testing, paper work, etc. before they give you any answers about specifics just so you WILL feel like you have already invested a lot in time and emotion and will not turn back, which is another very good reason to not allow them to silence us on the Internet.  There is very valid information to be shared about companies which is neither bashing nor praising but just that - information allowing us to make a decision about whether a company would be a good fit for us or not - BEFORE doing all the testing.

You must have some doubt in your mind about this or you would not be here asking the question. Go with your gut instinct. There are many good companies out there who do not impose these types of restrictions.

LOL - wouldn't last a day at TSI.. is that
supposed to be a compliment? LOL....
I wouldn't say that...sm
most companies do not say how much they pay because anyone that was any good would not even test then. They also do not base pay on how well you do on the test. You could ace it and still get offered 7 cpl because that is what they start at, no matter how much experience and knowledge you have. Raises are also few and far between. jmo
I wouldn't
It took 7 weeks of my waiting around to get work and then they finally got me on an account and there was no work. One problem after another. Passed between departments, no one ever giving the complete story.

Sad way to run a business in my opinion.
I wouldn't even consider it!
There are MUCH better companies out there...and ones that pay every 2 weeks as opposed to monthly! I would NEVER take a job that paid only once a month!
...nm up there. Pay wouldn't go over 9 cpl not even with
s
I wouldn't...
I am an experienced MT with 30+ years of experience. I just left this company. First of all, they outsource ALL of the good job types/dictators to India. Secondly, whatever the Indians can't do, they send to ASR. If you are happy to be relegated to an ASR Editor making peanuts, or transcribing the really, really bottom of the barrel reports, then go for it. If you are looking for respect, honest and open communication, plus decent pay, I wouldn't touch this with a 10-foot pole. I wouldn't send my worst enemy to Precyse.
you wouldn't know...
you are not morbidly obese. Until you have lived a day in my shoes, save your opinions for someone who cares.
And they wouldn't be the only

I wouldn't run s/m
I would politely tell that recruiter where he could put his job and that would be where the sun doesn't shine! This should tell you what kind of integrity this company has. Congratulations to you for doing the right thing and giving appropriate notice.
P.S...... and I wouldn't be doing this for a
xx
Me too, and wouldn't want to be anywhere else! sm
I can't believe how many MTs on this board are so miserable and getting SO ripped off! Direct Deposit is always on time for us at Webmedx, pay rate fair, good incentive plan. And I have plenty of work (most of the time, you have to admit that everyone runs out occasionally).
Why wouldn't you ask up sm
front in order to avoid wasting yours or their time what the pay scale was, or at least ballpark.  The time allotted doesn't sound unreasonable to complete the test.  If you bring experience and skill it's do-able.  Someone who cannot complete in that time may not be the best match.  Definitely ask up front next time about pay scale and if it's in line with your expectations.  If not, you thank them anyway, but no thanks and move on.
I wouldn't be so sure about that,
Check the labels in all your clothes, check the boxes the toys came in, check everything. Very little we buy (even at godalmighty walmart) is made in the US. Just because you buy it here, don't be sure it's made here.
Exactly why I wouldn't do this with others.
Sounds like your mom and your sister want the benefits of having their own accounts (higher pay), but want someone to do the extra work for them. Not the type of people I would want to get into business with.
I wouldn't, because it seems that all
that is a joy in your life you would not be able to participate in.   Our pets are just 4-legged children and it would take a lot for me to have to get rid of any of them.   You do what you have to do, especially these days, but I would have to keep exploring options at this point.
I wouldn't think so...sm
Im having almost the exact same problem. Im short on work, have sent emails to owner, etc..no answer. Looking for another part-time, no luck so far.

I would think that would be beneficial to them..being you are already trained and will require little if any startup time.
