and p.s. be prepared to hear from

*supposed* employees who will tell you it isn't so. They are lying and they are getting paid to lie. They know that American MTs are getting wise to being used by them.

Prepared
You sound like one savvy person. I think any hope that either MDI or Transcend might have for getting trust from MTs would be evaporated with the way this merger was handled. It is obvious that MTs are only things like pieces of equipment. Who knows, someone will invent a faux human with a USB port and they can do away with us altogether. I am still disillusioned that America's most patriotic company could have done this.
Prepared to be bored and much more. sm

I did legal for 9 years. I even went on to get my paralegal degree too. I loved the research, client interviews, etc., but the transcription is boring with a capital B. Tons and tons of formatting and forms as everything is different for each area of law and has to be done just so.

I was good at it, but ended up moving and couldn't find legal. I love MT so much more than legal. So much more interesting and a lot more money.

If you think healthcare is a tough field, wait until you deal with lawyers. If you want to stay at home and If you're going to go legal, study court reporting. That's where the interesting stuff is and the big bucks. Most legal transcription is inhouse so that the lawyers can have you schedule, answer phones, greet clients, take care of their trailing dockets AND do the transcription which they generally crab about if it's not done in a timely fashion even though the phone rings off the hook all day.

And if you work for a lawyer inhouse, buy suits, nice shoes and a briefcase (with an extra pair of nylons in case you get a run) and make sure your car doesn't look bad next to their caddy. They generally don't like that. :)

I did have one really great lawyer I worked for that didn't really care about all of that, but he also didn't really care about paying all that much.

Good luck!

Don't accept anything less than $50K and be prepared

,,,

Be prepared to be let go if you don't comply.

How hard is it to be prepared if

your check isn't there for one day? Wow, payday is Monday; if you get it early, great; if not, maybe don't over extend yourself....flame away if you must, but if you are truly living that tightly, maybe another job or backup plan?

Be prepared to run out of work
a lot. Feast or famine. If you're planning to get that $1500 signon bonus, forget it. The indians get all the jobs at night, nary a report left for an American to do.
Be prepared to find
another job.  I don't believe this can be done anonymously, and it will probably also have tax implications for you on past tax returns.
I am prepared not to break the law
Among other things.

Will I need to file past taxes? Yeah. But I've only worked for this company for a year, so it's not that big of a deal for me.

Will it mean I have to pay MORE in taxes? VERY HIGHLY unlikely. However, even if I do, it's worth it to me.

Why? Because I would prefer to stay inside the law.

There are several reasons why it's a Very Bad Thing for companies to willfully misclassify employees as independent contractors. The least of which is that misclassification - on average - costs taxpayers money.

Second, and most importantly, because so many companies are willing to dramatically uneven the playing field ILLEGALLY, it leaves VERY little room for success for an honest company willing to provide quality service and pay their employees accordingly.

Being complicit in the cheating of one company SCREWS the majority of all other transcriptionists.

Are you really so selfish to be a cog in this machine? For what cannot be much more than a few dollars a paycheck, when you start figuring in the tax issue and the lack of benefits?

If we're going to have rules, EVERYONE should have to play by them. Or we should get rid of the rules ... and then see what happens.
Be prepared to go on welfare. (SM)
Most of the regions for Transcend are fairly good but there are a couple that the managers consistently overhire and leave us with no work. My manager and team leads do not care whether I eat or not or whether I have insurance because we have no work, but some of my friends tell me they have more work than they can do, so I guess it is just the luck of the draw. Too bad they keep a couple of bad eggs to make things stinky for some of us. One thing I learned a long time ago - do not complain or you get labeled as a complainer and then the next step is out the door. They are heartless.
If you go to the docs, be prepared to lose your job.

Although how much can that matter if you are not being paid anyway!!!  I personally have never had this happen to me, but I can see where it could cause major problems on many levels (especially if you have automatic bank withdrawals).  I would have to consider - Is it the client's fault?  Is the company not managing money correctly?  Does this happen often?

It is your employer's place to investigate this problem with the client, not you. I would strongly suggest that you not go directly to the client unless you have reached your limit with the company and no longer wish to be employed by them.  Have they actually broken their contract agreement with you.  If so, then I say it is every man for himself so to speak.

Be prepared to give a schedule and stick to it.
In my personal experirence, I was titled IC but let me tell you, if I was not signed on DURING THE SET HOURS I WAS ASKED TO PROVIDE, EMAILS AND CALLS ENSUED.

IC? Not so much. More like employee without employees, IMO.
Sincerely, I do hope you're prepared to work for 8 cpl now
Apparently MDI was one of the companies that paid their experienced MTs pretty well.

With the merge, you'll be making less eventually. If you quit and look for a new job, you'll be making less, way less, than you were making at MDI.

I'm another one who's BTDT, too. I went from making 11 cpl to now making 8 cpl. I tried HARD to find any company, obscure to well known, that will start off more than that. Couldn't find 'em. Probably won't ever go up, either.

Just sayin' that you should be prepared to budget your living costs for the amount of money you'll be missing each month compared to what you were making at MDI. It's awful, I know, been through it. Going to school now to do something else, getting out.
Anyone that applied with Kathy Kirby hear anything yet? I am wondering how long it takes to hear a
response back
I said MAY NOT hear, didn't say you wouldn't hear. There is
a difference, and many people have said they knew they didn't do well on the tests, but still feel like they should have heard from companies and haven't.
Hear, hear! (Or is it 'here, here?') LOL

Thanks! I'm glad to hear that, I didn't think anyone used it anymore! I'm glad to hear so
I'll definitely check them out!
Hear, hear! Read My Opinion's opinion.
Regarding Wondering's question, the company I work for is investing strongly in upgrading its MTs' and editors' skill levels (exactly what this says about need for us for ten years down the road I can't say). This morning I found an e-mail saying they would pay every one of us to attend an on-line class on making Expander macros to increase our productivity. Amazingly, I have to assume many employees were choosing not to attend the unpaid ones they had been offering...
I hear you.

And it ticks me off that they refer to these people as "medical editors."  If these people are medical editors, where are DC notes sent now, to GOD?

Just seems to me they're trying to reel people in by pumping up their egos, offering them jobs as "medical editors," when in fact they probably wouldn't qualify for job as a legitimate medical Editor with any other company.

Lofty titles don't mean much if your wallet is empty.

Would like to hear from other ST L MTs...

Hi, would love to network with St Louis MTs... I'm about an hour south... would love to work directly for the hospital, tired of services!!!

suz

I hear you there.
That's also the ONLY reason I stuck with them. I have kids at home, at college and a husband who travels and makes a hell of a lot more than I do. Guess whose schedule is always getting stepped on through no fault of my own....that's right mine. And once I go live on DEP where they can track my every move I don't want to spend every day avoiding my phone. And I NEVER received any questionaire from them asking what my needs were. And I answered the phone and it was just to tell me the packet was in the mail.e
From what I hear about OSi
it is the same as always, amazingly unqualified people in charge but if you don't mind that and the fact they send jobs overseas while some MTs sit here twiddling their thumbs go for it.
Because you will never hear the same
If you can't learn their voices and genuflections, how can you build up speed?
Since when? From what I hear,
...
I hear you!
I can't seem to make any money on this platform and I've been here almost 1 year! The dictators are horrible -99% ESL.
Where did you hear about them? nm
nm
you might not want to hear this, but

Let me first say that I believe that there is a reason for people phrasing things a certain way and not getting into the specifics...... probably because it would take entirely too long to do!!! For instance, when I first read the part about does Spheris offer a computer, before I even read the response, the FIRST THING that entered my mind was Yep, and heartache too! only to open up the thread and see it there!! How funny!!

I would be glad to tell you at least a couple of reasons why I encountered heartache. And please, I know that there are some that are reading this that work for the company and if you have not had the experience I had, please do not insult me nor my intelligence by making idiotic comments that have nothing to do with my individual experience, which you most certainly would not know about unless you HAPPEN TO BE me!

Anyhow, I worked for Spheris for aprx three weeks. During that time, I was informed, only after I had accepted the job, mind you, that if my QA was not 98% in ( I believe) five days, that I would be fired. Now, mind you, I am an experienced transcriptionist, but when you have had several jobs that teach and do things differently, it is kind of hard to try to reprogram your mind in five days! By the fourth day I was stressed out and making more mistakes than I ordinarily would have. However, I did make the 98%. Well, after that, I was finding that I was ALWAYS short of work and on Mondays, I was lucky if I got one note at all. Yes, paycheck was horrible. Well, the last straw for me was when they magically decided to trim down the pay for everyone on that specific account. Not sure if it was across the whole company board or not. I finally had had enough harrassment, lies, and disappointment, and it only took me three weeks to get there!

Anyhow, I say that to say this. All of us are  grown. We know what you need and what we don't, what we can handle, and what we can't. Ultimately, we have to make the decision and live with it. I wish all who happen to work there all the best, and hopefully things are different now.

Be Blessed!!!

I hear you...and ...
it is not just in our field it's our clothes, our cars, our applicances, just about everything.  Look at the tag on a garmet or picture frame, or stuffed animal you have.  What does it say?....this is horrific for the future of this country!!
I hear ya.
I worked for them last year on radiology account. Pay is very slow....never know when you will get a check. I had to call twice for W2 this year. Quit last christmas because check should have received prior to Thanksgiving was mailed after Thanksgiving, no phone call, no email, nothing just mail checks out late. Require high degree of accuracy from MTs, but office people, that is another matter.
Sorry to hear about that.
How long have you had the computer?  Is there any way you can bring it back and at least get part of your money back?  Wow.  Sorry to hear about what happened.
Where did you hear about this?
I work for Amphion and haven't heard anything about it???? Are they telling you this or did you find out some other way? Just curious as to what the plans are. I've only been there 1-1/2 months but have been pretty happy and satisfied so far.....
I hear ya! I am right here with you. sm
Melissa is my manager too. They could have let us know a long time ago. They knew... what about the 4-6 months they were 'investigating options'... they didn't have the balls to tell us then that we should start looking? Such crap! I'll work with you to do anything we can to get them off the map. We should email the clients!!
I hear ya! -
Been at TL, then MQ for 15 years. That makes it tough. But with the changes, this is definitely not going to work out long term. Good luck to you!
Any one hear of CMT?

Anyone ever hear of CMT.  I think they are in 813 area code somewhere.  Thanks.

Hear anything yet?
I was considering applying for part time work as well.  Have you heard anything yet?
How do you hear anything there? sm
I've been there nearly a year and hear absolutely nothing from anyone! No communication whatsoever. At first it was strange as I came from a company who emailed us multiple times daily, switching to nothing. Now I'm kind of used to it I guess. I do wonder how anyone knows anything there as there are no emails!??
Hear hear! (sm)

Actually would like to hear from

on how it is to work for Precyse at this time.  Thanks!

You are better off when you hear
are receiving the pay on time.  That's all that really matters.  If you are hearing negatives then you need more training.  If all is quiet then usually all is well.  As for the coffee mug... well... I'm at a loss for words.   I don't need a coffee mug to fill me.  More money would be great but there's always someone out there who will work for cheaper in any industry not just this one.  Maybe you shoud go into journalism.  However, when you write a book, usually you'll need an Editor and from what I understand they are brash as well.  Find new clients/jobs because dwelling and writing stories like this will not gain you the attention you obviously require.  JMO.  Good luck in your endeavors.
sorry to hear that

good luck to you guys.

Then I will have to hear it that way. . .
from the person who said I was off the account. If that was you, you need to e-mail me.
Hey, Im sorry to hear...
about that. I know when reputable people start leaving a company, you cant help for feeling helpless and antsy.
If you don't do well you may never hear, but

response time can vary depending on if they are actively hiring and how many resumes/tests they have gotten.   The longest I've ever had to wait was 2 days.

where did you hear about pay cut?
just curious
I hear ya!
I do ebay part time selling items purchased at yard sales and make more there than being an MT, go figure!
When did you hear that?
I left a message this morning, but have not heard from anybody. I thought I was doing okay. I always met my TAT.
I hear ya! sm
I am currently putting out resumes and am hoping and praying that I get answers soon. The only reason I'm still there is because I need the insurance at the moment, and the money until something else comes along. Kudos to you for getting out when you did. You made the best move you could have regarding SPi. I desperately hope to be out of there soon.
wow. do you hear yourself?
BIG HUG, feel better.
I am sorry to hear that -
sad enough MTs are getting paid such low wages and this MTSO cannot or will not pay their help? whew! that's pretty bad.
Anyone hear anything about.......
Verbatim Medical Transcription out of NY?  Thanks for your help!
I hear you!
If this new thing works out like I am really thinking and hoping it will, I will be joining you. Its just too much.
We Don't Hear That Very Often!

This reminds me of a recent discussion I had with another MT, where we both agreed how honest MTs are across the board.  We see all the info a crook would die for (and they often do), and never use it inappropriately.  I also had the same conversation with someone who isn't an MT, who also agreed.

Based on how seldom this happens, we need to feel proud of our honesty.  As for anyone who would pull a stunt like this, they'll get theirs in the end.

It reminded me of another discussion here about background checks.  While I believe that our years of work experience should cover that, basically all companies who have their employees coming into our homes to work have passed these checks.

With increasing identity theft, don't be surprised if this becomes standard from here on out.  I don't like it, but have to look at the definite possibility.

Hopefully we'll learn more about this situation at Grady.  Do others have similar stories like this?  Just curious.
