one space between words

Posted By: NewKSer on 2009-07-01
In Reply to: Funny you should say that.. - disgusted

I have always only had 1 space between words, and I have been typing for over 25 years. I do have 2 spaces after periods and colons, but 2 spaces between words seems a bit excessive to me.

DQS to use only one space soon

They are going to have the DQS people put in only one space soon..email this morning stated they are going from account to account and will notify the employee when the account is ready to use only one space after periods and colons..If we do get paid for spaces, as I have been told we do, that means we will get a cut in pay because the second space after each sentence will not be counted in our line count.

1 less space
well, imagine that!! they're on a rolllll -- 20% less on line rate for ME work -- makes ya wonder what's next!!! i think i'm getting about ready to get the heck out of Dodge before the bullets start flying!!
no space pay
the bottom line is that they SHOULD be charging the client because it is still a keystroke and this will continue to happen where we are not getting paid for what we are doing. We hit the spacebar, it is a keystroke, we should be compensated for it. Period.

Otherwiseifwearenotbeingcompensatedforspacestheytheydonotgetspaces!!!!

My opinion, of course, but I am sure that many agree.
MY Space
Oh just an FYI. Robin Hall happens to have a My Space page. You can go to it by going to my space.com and just entering /robin_hall. If that doesn't work, try doing a search for Four Seasons Transcription. Maybe we can all go there and leave a message letting her know we as MTs are tired of putting up with people like her. I am 4 paychecks behind myself and Christmas is coming.
space pay

Compensation on one of the jobs on the jobs board says:

You get paid for a 65-character line PLUS spaces!

Wow!  I am sure glad they invented the exclamation point!  It really makes me excited to hear stuff like this, especially when so vehemently punctuated!  It's exciting to get paid for spaces, especially when they are so necessary for clarity!

Pay for space
I work for a company that does not pay for spaces and it takes forever to get line count required, but I needed the job and the benefits at the time.  It seems like MTs are going backward in pay per line instead of forwards.  Everyone wants a good MT with years and years of experience, but no one wants to pay for our knowledge.     I have seen some pay as low as 6 to 7 cents a line for a seasoned MT.  One company told me they like to make the money, but only offered me 7 cents a line for 30 years experience.   I like to make the money too.  I turned it down.    I went from hourly pay down to pay per line.   Devastating too.  Only make half of what I used to, but at least what I am making is paying some bills and buying food, but nothing left for anything else anymore like I used to.  Very depressing.
It has been 1 space after periods
since the new Style Guidelines took effect or affect, Ha Ha and make sure you do not use your expansions. If they say COPD you cannot expand it; and what about making lists of everything from meds to past history, etc. etc. Anything to not pay you for those lines.

Oh and don't forget it is x2 not the word "times". That would be too many characters on the line and we cannot pay you for that.

What horse will you be traveling on. I'll be going with ya.
Why cant we use expander with one less space?
We havent gone to one space yet but I got the email this morning that they are working on the accounts and will notify us when our accounts are changed over.  Why cant you use the Expander with one space?  I dont know what I will do without my expander.  When you switched over, did you take a big cut in pay with the one less space?

Please feel free to post your resume on our free resume bank. As well, you can search our Job Seeker's board. The job advertisements there are very descriptive and you should be able to find something there.

55 count space
I had a PT job that used 55. At the end of my day, I would divide total characters done by 55 and that gave me my line space and then I was paid 9 cents per line which was good for my PT job which I lost due to hospital keeping it all in-house and not outsourcing anything. I miss that money too.
one space - who makes up these rules?
What I would like to know who makes these new rules up?  The email said new national standard, something like that.  I mean, how can someone change Americas punctuation and English rules?  I was taught way back when, when I first was taught typing in high school..two spaces..who changed the rules?  Is there a *standards judge*, LOL..A *spacer judge*..Who thinks these things up and if it is national standard, do the other MTSO's know about it?
Do 1 space and count lines and then do 2
It really doesn't affect the line count that much to do the 1 space after punctuation. I agree 100% that they are trying to whittle our wages away wherever, but I don't think this particular issue is a big one. I get virtually the same lines whether 1 space or 2 after sentences. I'm more concerned about the virtual black line that would eliminate ALL spaces like AAMT (or whatever it's called now) is pushing than just a few spaces per report. This is why it's so important for all MTs to know and understand every crazy line-count method out there!
I love Office Space...
Is it pathetic I've probably seen it 20 times and still laugh every time I watch it?

I seriously should expand my movie horizons, huh?

:D
which IC positions use 1 space after periods?
My FT job requires 1 space after periods, which took me a long time to adjust to. Now I would like to get a 2nd job as well but I don't want to mess up my typing trying to go back and forth between 1 and 2 spaces at jobs?  TIA
Have you compared line counts with 1 space vs. 2?
NM
Thanks for the information..I'm with you.. Not enough desk space or desire to pay a deposit
Probably pass too..
I have 2002, here is how mine is set to double space after sentences --sm
Open word.

Type a mispelled word, then press F7 to spellcheck.

Click on options. In the writing style box, mine says grammar only. Click on settings below that. Then you can select 2 spaces after a period in sentences.

Does that work for you?
HINT: Program only "reads" 1 space, no matter how many spaces you type.

They have you coming and going.

Mostly they have us by the pocketbooks because they REFUSE to share how the program counts.  THIS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL since that is how we are paid.

Would you work HOURLY for a company when they will not show you what kind of clock they are using to count what an hour is?

We are paid by production!  PRODUCTION.  It should not be a mystery how to count our PRODUCTION.

I just dont want to hit that extra space if I dont get paid for it, ya know. No message.

In other words
at least on my reports it is counting each character and space correctly, yet line counts remain much lower on DQS.  Numerous others have posted the same thing here.
WORDS R' US

Hello-- I do know for a fact that the company is legit, as I live in the same city as the company. Dont know much about pay, although I do remember that they pay by the dictated minute. Hope this helps!

a few words
I don't know how much you know about the internet but posting in all caps is the equivalent of screaming and you seem to be screaming alot in your post below..

Just briefly, you seem to be posting as an MT, citing your experience with platforms, difficult QA programs, transcribing off the clock - yet you write about concerns that are definitely those of management, getting staff to show up for work, work flow, if you can't work that shift don't apply, we created offshoring so all of you MTs out there… Most MTs I know are concerned with work pools, fair treatment, honesty, timeliness of payroll, quality of dictators, line rate, etc. I have enough respect for the MTs and management that read this board to be able to intuit whether you are an MT or not or exactly what the motives of your post were; maybe to score points, I don't know, but whatever your motive, your post does not address my post at all..

In a very few words without any caps I told the MT asking the question about my experience. My post was truthful and I went out of my way to tell her that my experience didn't mean it would be the same for her and even indicated such things are hard to determine. I don't know if she was an Editor or MT I posted to warn someone who asked for guidance about my experience simply because I wouldn't want anyone to go through what I and others have. And I would want someone to give me the same heads ups if I had asked for guidance on a board about a certain company. It was measured, thoughtful, and brief and not an embellishment or downright lie to make a company look bad. I think you took care of that pretty well with your post.

I am not going to get into any debate with you or follow up any response you might make as you seem to have a lot of anger you are carrying around and maybe even an anger management problem but mostly because you seem to deal in absolutes that most reasonable people do not. Because you don't know of a situation does not mean it doesn't exist, because you have not had a similar experience does not make it an embellishment or lie, but mostly your generalizations and judgmentalness are breathtaking. MTs brought offshoring on themselves, download work and then go shopping, do laundry and dishes all day - that's a lot of laundry and a lot of dishes! - most do not take their jobs seriously, no work ethic, go back to the doctor's office and on and on… I just know that my experience has been MTs, editors and management in the transcription field pretty much run the same as most other professions, a lot of them are serious thoughtful professionals, a lot of them aren't, and painting them all with the same broad stroke because you happen to disagree with them or with what someone posts on a board doesn't give a lot of credibility to you or what you are saying.

As I waded through your derisiveness and sarcasm and anger I just felt bad for you and maybe you ought to think about the fact MT might not be for you…and if you are a member of Alltype management, oh wow…

Working for MQ seems intolerable to me from just what I read from their postings here. My work, for the most part, is smooth, nothing like only allowed 3 blanks (I would be in a tizzy then because of our ESLs) and so on. I cannot believe people actually want to stay there. What is the big draw?
don't stick by their words
There is way too much of that in this industry.
Thank you. I think those are just made up words.

There is a Google box right under the words
type in what you want to search and then click the circle beside 'mtstars' located right below the Google box, then search. This will bring up archives on your topic, if there are any.
You have to be kidding. Per your own words, DR

is not the best. Any poor MTs coming from MQ have been beaten to death by now - they don't need another company that is not THE BEST. Let's see - what was I being tactful and leaving out? It takes 4-ever and a day to actually start - criminal background checks - yeah, I know, no big deal, but still creepy - physical exams, and plenty of other hoops - probably a month to get started. Computers were garbage and platform was down often, though none in my account received 1 cent of downtime pay. Platform antiquated and also allowed for prime cherry picking. As a newby, I used to watch the good work get sucked right out of my pool from my coworkers. Backstabbing galore, office politics, no supervision whatsoever. Pay was on the low side, but was told it was due to how great hospital accounts were - not really. MTs expected to adhere to a strict schedule - quality of work was poor as we got hospital leftovers from inhouse staff. DR also has had run-ins with the labor board and were found guilty of whatever it was they were caught doing. So, yes, let these comments scare you - check the company board archives - always lots of negative about DR. In fact, this is the first time I have ever read positives, so I honestly suspect its their recruiter trying to snag some newbies. DR was even posted about just last week - go thru pages and search for them. Good luck to you! Definitely not a good replacement for MQ. If you're close to the breakdown point, as I was when I left MQ, DR is likely to push you right over the edge.

Thank you so much for the kind words!
:-)
I want to thank you all for your kind words SM

and suggestions.  It means a lot to me.  I'm a pretty optimistic person, so I believe something better will come along...but it feels good to share my frustrations with those of you who have been there, done that, and got the T-shirt!

I better go to work!  Have a great weekend everyone and Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there.

Just Me

Your words are obviously heartfelt,
but it might be time to consider another career if you feel so dehumanized that you consider yourself a machine. Best wishes.
Perfect words! sm
I guess I needed someone else to validate for me that it might be okay. Although you'd think my hubby and three children would be enough to do it for me:)  I too am having a very hard time with the testing for other large companies; that is why I was surprised and even a little leary that I passed this one, almost too easily.  And yes, the experience on the resume would be big!  My next project for tomorrow tho (while waiting to get info that I probably won't receive for one reason or another) is to test for Amphion...been interested for awhile so what the heck. Thanks again for making me feel okay!
Thanks all for the words of wisdom. Nm

I just have ten words on the subject....

Words Unlimited in N. J.
Anybody ever hear of or work for this company in E. Brunswick, NJ?  Raymonde Pozzolano is the owner.  Need info ASAP.  Thanks!
Why Ortho Words?? sm

I most times start with Google and then make sure it is spelled correctly by looking it up in the medical dictionary.  I also use a Word Book that just gives medical words but no definitions.  That helps to narrow things down sometimes too.

I'm wondering why the above poster said to get Ortho Words.  Is that a must for all types of specialties in your opinion?  I don't have one but would get one if it is helpful.   I do Radiology so you would think that would be good for me anyway.  Think I'm going to go to Amazon.com right now and order one.

have 3 letters or less, so 25% or more of the space taken by that word would include at least 1 space.

Words Unlimited.....
I am looking into a few different places to place resumes and I came across Words Unlimited.  There is no info in this board that I can find out about them.  Does anyone on here work for them or has worked for them.  Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks
