i have had the opposite experience. if you shop around you can find a doctor who will quietly charge you the discounted rate he would give the insurance company, just for the break it gives him on paperwork hassles. some docs are really sympathetic to those of us too rich for free medical care and too poor for insurance.

also, for a family of four I would pay about 700 a MONTH in insurance. that easily pays ordinary medical costs. For extraordinary medical costs, I find somebody who will work out a payment plan.
