Addendum to my post!

In Reply to: My son did last year - Wanda

My son received the "Einstein Award" in his science class on his last day of school for having the highest percentage in the class all year (over 100%).   Obviously skipping has not hurt him a bit.  Also, I only found out in a casual conversation about end of the school year goings on as he did not even think it was important!

It is recommended that the girls receive this immunization at this age for FUTURE sexual contact.  That does not mean you are condoning sex at that age, nor are you encouraging it, but you may be saving your daughter from cancer LATER in her lif.  How would you feel if at age 30 she came to you with the diagnosis and knwoing you could have possibly prevented it?  No one says to go have sex at age 10, 13, or even before marriage, but let's face, the child is eventually going to have sex...whether it be before or after marriage.  You also can teach your child all of your VALUES and instill in them the morals you desire for them to hold on to, but you CANNOT expect that.  You also have no clue whether her future mate (sexual or marital) has been privvy to any STD and therefore cannot predict any outcomes of what she may or may not end up with.  Since this particular STD does not show up in clasic formation, such as herpes, etc., it would be better to be proactive in her healthcare.  This is not a "go ahead and have sex" immunization, but one of possible preventable disease.

When I was a teenager, and I am female so I am sure it is much more so for males, I was very headstrong and the only way my parents would have been able to keep me away from the people I was hanging out with would have been to move. That's a fact. They could talk to me until they were blue and ground me and whatever, but I would climb out the window at night to see my friends! We lived in a bad neighborhood. The main thing he needs is to not feel that everyone is against him or that everyone thinks he is bad. I did not have those issues happen to me, but my brother did. He spent years in juvenile detention and eventually jail for DUIs and for getting into fights in public. He is now 35 years old and has a good job - but no driver's license, not even to go to work and back - and his wife has to drive him to work. Whatever you have to do, including moving, would be worth it. He may hate you for it in the short-term, but it's better than the alternative.

Joseph Cornell - Assemblage Art

Joseph Cornell (1903-73) was an American artist; born in Nyack, N.Y. He is best known for his shadow boxes made of found objects, maps, photographs, engravings, and other materials. Influenced by SURREALISM, these constructions are personally symbolic and evocative.  (Biographical information copied from Ask Jeeves Encyclopedia 2001 - no longer online)

He had no formal training in art and his most characteristic works are his highly distinctive `boxes'. These are simple boxes, usually glass-fronted, in which he arranged surprising collections of photographs or Victorian bric-à-brac in a way that has been said to combine the formal austerity of Constructivism with the lively fantasy of Surrealism. Like Kurt Schwitters he could create poetry from the commonplace. Unlike Schwitters, however, he was fascinated not by refuse, garbage, and the discarded, but by fragments of once beautiful and precious objects, relying on the Surrealist technique of irrational juxtaposition and on the evocation of nostalgia for his appeal (he befriended several members of the Surrealist movement who settled in the USA during the Second World War). Cornell also painted and made Surrealist films. (This information copied from WebMuseum)

Preserved in Cornell's boxes are items as divergent as drinking glasses and a cork ball; a clay pipe and a diagram of the orbits of earth and the moon; images of a Medici Princess, each accompanied by a wooden sphere; and a translucent marble in a cascade of blue sand. Cornell fuses his work with poetic intensity, and a private and enigmatic sentiment, which together affect the viewer as if these very objects formed a recording of a burst of Cornell's sense of joy, or wonder, or love, or sadness.

Though now highly sought after by Museums and private collections, Cornell's signature "boxes", which he began to make in the 1930s were not originally conceived as being for such a wide audience. Rather, they were made as "gifts" for individuals sometimes living, sometimes dead, often people the artist had never met, but who in some way had touched his life. Addendum: Sometimes it's the "wife." sm
When working for individual docs offices, once the wife came on the scene, she would book every last second of his time, the docs themselves only wanted to "doctor" and the wives controlled the $$$ to the point of ridiculous scheduling 10 min. or much less apart. They were also the ones who would "search around" for lower transcription prices, never asking background, only what you charge. They're usually all about the money. Gyn's do have "nurses" and I stand corrected. Most GP's I know hire for on-the-job training, I always ask every time.

I guess I'm going to be changing veterinarians soon.... here's an update to the post below:

The oral pain/anti-inflammatory my cat was prescribed (which thank God I didn't give her without researching it!), is "Metacam" (meloxicam) oral suspension.  The article below is from the rescue where I got my cat.  Thank goodness I checked their website just now!

I was wrong about her vomiting BEFORE we went to the vet.  It was last night, which was about 8-10 hours AFTER being given one dose of Metacam p.o.  (This was an off-label treatment, as the oral suspension is for DOGS.)  Since it was given in the vet's office directly into her mouth, and she weighs less than 10 lbs.,  she most likely had an OVERDOSE, which is why she vomited up her dinner in every room of the house lase night.  The drug had been prescribed to help bring down the inflammation in the area of her lesion and fluid aspiration.   But among other things, this drug can cause kidney failure in cats.  "No, thanks!"   I lost a cat to renal failure a few years back, and it took me 3 years to pay off the over $5,000 in vet bills I'd put on my MasterCard!  And the cat still had to be put down, anyway.

So, here I've been spending the morning researching veterinary literature, checking my pet-insurance coverage limits, and biting my nails about the possible damage I might have done to my cat simply by trying to keep her up-to-date on her shots.   I'm just about to change my pet-care-policy to "no more shots and no more meds"!

Here's the article:

Metacam Risks in Cats

What is Metacam?

Metacam ® is the veterinary brand name for meloxicam,,a

non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)used to reduce

pain and inflammation. This article deals with two versions:

Metacam Solution for Injection (for cats)and Metacam Oral

Suspension (for dogs).

Metacam ’s FDA Approval Status

Metacam Solution for Injection was approved for one-time

use only in cats on 28 Nov 2004 (NADA 141-219).Metacam

Oral Suspension was approved for dogs only on 15 Apr 2003

(NADA 141-213).As of July 2006,the approval status of both

medications has not changed.

There is a misconception that using medications in a non-

FDA-approved fashion is illegal. This is simply not so;the FDA

regulates drug manufacturers, not the practice of veterinary

medicine.Veterinarians may prescribe any drugs they have

reason to believe are safe and effective, even if the particular

use is not FDA approved (this practice is known as "off-label "

or "extralabel " use)).However, you and your cat do not have

any FDA assurance that the drug is safe and effective.

Common uses of Metacam in Cats

Metacam is commonly used in cats for two cases:

(a)Metacam Solution for Injection (or simply "Metacam

Injection ")is used to provide post-operative relief of pain and

inflammation for up to 24 hours following procedures such as

dentistry,spaying and neutering.Vets often prescribe a few

daily follow-up doses of Metacam Oral for continued pain

relief, although this is not an FDA approved use.

(b)Metacam Oral Suspension (or simply "Metacam Oral ")is

often prescribed to relieve arthritis pain in cats.Although this

is also not an FDA approved use,it is known to be effective,

albeit with some risk.

Low Safety Margin =Higher Risks

According to the manufacturer ’s product sheet 1 ,Metacam has

a narrow margin of safety (also known as therapeutic index )

in cats, meaning that there is very little difference between a

safe, effective dose and a toxic dose.Repeated doses of

Metacam Oral in cats have been known to result in death,as

documented in the clinical tests 3 submitted to the FDA.

The narrow safety margin in cats is reflected in the FDA ’s

Adverse Drug Experience (ADE)reports 4 for Metacam Oral,

which summarize drug side effects reported by veterinarians.

Of 842 reports for dogs,19 cases of kidney failure and no

deaths were reported. However in 320 cats,105 cases of

kidney failure,48 deaths and 35 cases resulting in euthanasia

have been reported. This clearly indicates that Metacam poses

a much greater risk in cats than in dogs.

The use of Metacam poses not only a significant health risk to

the cat,but also exposes the cat owner to significant financial

risk. The treatment of kidney failure requires days of hospitalization,

and the outcome may be death.Whether the cat survives or

not,the hospital bill can easily exceed $1,000.

Because of Metacam ’s narrow safety margin, veterinarians

will order blood tests to check your cat ’s kidney and liver

functions and general state of health.Don ’t try to save money

by refusing these tests;it ’s essential to know if your cat is at

greater risk.Should side effects occur, your vet is likely to

order another round of tests to check the drug ’s impact on

your cat.Be prepared for these costs.

Problems with Smaller Cats

The post-surgical use of Metacam Oral in smaller cats (under

10 lbs.)poses a unique problem.The product sheet for Metacam

Oral 2 warns against administering the drug directly into the

mouth for dogs weighing less than 10 lbs,as this may cause

an accidental overdose.Instead,it must be mixed with food to

ensure slower absorption. The Metacam Injection used during

surgery may cause loss of appetite, and the cat won ’t eat his

oral dose.So you ’re likely to try to administer the dose directly

into the mouth, but if your cat weighs less than 10 lbs.(and

many do),this only increases the risk of overdose.

Questions for your Vet

Given the clearly documented risks of Metacam Oral in cats,it

is wise to ask your veterinarian the following questions if he or

she recommends its use:

Are my cat ’s blood tests (especially liver &kidney functions)OK?

What side effects should I look out for?

Under what conditions should I discontinue the medication?

Who do I call on evenings or weekends if my cat has a reaction?

Is there a 24-hour emergency animal hospital in the area?

May I have copies of the Metacam product sheets?

Persians are a more delicate breed, are you sure this is safe?

My cat weighs less than 10 pounds, are you sure this is safe?

What other pain medications are FDA-approved in cats?

What pain medications were you using prior to Metacam Oral ’s

release in 2003?

Are these medications safer and/or cheaper than Metacam?

Conclusion

There are clearly documented risks associated with the off-

label use of Metacam Oral in cats which may lead to kidney

failure and death. These risks should be carefully discussed

with your veterinarian before proceeding with any Metacam

treatment.For post-operative pain relief,explore other alternatives

with your veterinarian before agreeing to the use of Metacam.

Thank you for your post....sm
at least YOU seem to understand the concept of what a thyroid problem can do to a person...unlike anon poster below, who has a very closed mind about ANYthing she does not agree with.

My thyroid problem is quite bad. I HAVE seen an endocrinologist who explained that thyroid disease is an autoimmune disease, where the body attacks certain organs for no reason. I did not do well on synthetic thyroid replacement and switched to a *natural* form. I am currently taking 120 mg daily and that is a lot. The endocrinologist said that my thyroid was barely functioning at all.

I feel very bad for your brother in law, as I truly understand how he feels. Thank you again for your understanding support for my problem, rather than attacking me with being a food junky, being paranoid, needing a psychiatrist, telling me I am nuts, and to pursue bariatric surgery, which all tends to lower my already low self-esteem. thank you for your courage to post. It is nice to know that SOME people understand.

Sorry to post again about this but (sm)

Divorce is a huge decision - I have been talking to family and friends but this is the only place I can get anonymous opinions from a lot of people, and it is more likely that someone here may have been through something similar.  My husband now is asking me to not go.  But he has already told me just a few nights ago that he was never happy with me, was always disappointed and frustrated with who I am, and that this is probably the reason he hit me a few years ago.  He went nuts a few years ago during a very minor argument (children were not present), and now says that it was probably because of years of frustration.  But now he is once again asking me to stay.  Because my parents are divorced he says that "divorce is the only thing I know" when faced with conflict.  I have been here almost 14 years and he has never been happy with me.  Even when I was young and thin and our house was spotless.  My question is - if he has never been happy with me, and I have always been a source of frustration, why should I stay now and expect things to improve?  We have been to 4 marriage counsellors in the past.  I am scared about leaving and I still do love him deep down, but why continue to stay if I will never be good enough?

I should have put LOL after my post
about the fancy car. My parents and my MIL drive "fancy" cars. I agree that wasn't a nice thing to say.
Well, here you can post what you think

Well, here you can post what you think is an awesome idea or might we say lame... (Creativity is the key)

I'll start with:

Awesome:

Lame:

Would anyone who has used Cymbalta please reply to my post on the Mental Health board. I think this is suitable for "gab" but only one answer on that board. Thanks! BTW, I don't think exhaustion and pain from this profession is all "in our mind." I hope you agree.

I saw that post too
I'm glad I wasn't the only one confused. This is a gab board and that's what we're doing gabbing about cats and other animals. If he/she isn't interested, just don't read the posts. By the way, I have an all black Halloween cat and the kids get a big kick out of him when them come to the door.
I think your post is right on
My hubs and I have separate and I trust him beyond belief, would never know what he made a year except at tax time. I think it is great to have hubs you trust and can take care of things like yours does. Seems like a dream deal to me. I could care less for doing anything when it comes to financial deals but sometimes have to fool with that. If I had a hubs that dealt with everything, I would be more than happy. You are blessed.
Just saw this post
Yes, his anal glands were really impacted- the post below this 1 helped me tremendously. Never knew felines got that way. He went to the veterinarian the very day I learned about the possibility of what it could be, the vet expressed the glands and relieved that problem. Yesterday my big boy (20 and a half lbs) went to the groomers to get him all cleaned and smelling good again. One more thing I learned- he is double furred boy and hair was even growing over his anus which had to be shaved. He is quite the handsome guy today!
100% right and that is my post
Give varied foods to be served but can you just imagine if 10 or more kids would not eat and demanded certain foods for their own eating? Did not say kids should be forced to eat anything but definitely needs vegetables in their diet. Sit foods on the table, not much fuss and let the child eat and eat good, no junk stuff, no Cokes, no sweetened drinks, no overloading on the chips, cookies and other sweets.
By the way, there is a second pic in that post above. (nm)

I just had to post this pic too!
This is my youngest, Scooter, when we first brought him home 2 years ago. He is MUCH bigger now! LOL!
Above post is IMO, of course.

Thanks for your post
She's actually the one that's hard on herself. If she was in regular classes it wouldn't matter to me. I'll see what happens when she gets home in an hour.
The post above you was right
You have said as much by "someone saying to mind your own business." It is her business, not any of yours at all. As far as the thrown away card, once a person is given a present, whether it is a card or whatever it is, it is their property then and the person can toss it, hold onto it or do what they like. She is minding her own business as you should. In your posts you come back time and again about what friends you were, how you emailed every day, you seem really clingy to this person, like you cannot make it another day before you hear from her. Do you have any life of your own?

Sorry Cat, but NO apology is necessary -- the word "foal" was used in the original post, for those who don't know, "give birth" would have been a better term and BTW -- I am the granddaughter of a cattle rancher and have seen my share from BIRTH TO DEATH -- and we are talking 25,000 acres as well thank you VERY much

I was the "oldest granchild" on my mom's side of the family and the "eldest of 4 girls" on my dad's side and he was the baby of his family. My paternal grandmother was the head baker for the local hospital and used to make ALL the "Holiday" pies for the docs to take home -- she had a mincemeat receipie to DIE for but when she died, it went with her :(

My maternal grandparents were great too. Little by little during the depression, they bought land in the Sandhills of Nebraska spent WHOPPING sum of $10 an acre and eventually built the ranch up to be approximately 25K acres, their cattle were pretty much all grass fed, gram had a "scrap bucket" under the sink, which was used to feed the chickens and they produced ORANGE yolks.

I just wish that our generation that is being raised nowadays could somehow understand how much more important the "simple values" are
Thank you for your post!
It sure is refreshing to listen to someone who actually KNOWS about religion and can pontificate (chose this word on purpose) about differences/similarities. If more people KNEW about various religions, we would have more acceptance and less ignorance in the world.

Thanks again, from your friendly agnostic....

I am STILL grieving for what happened in my hometown a week ago today -- it not ONLY affected the university but the surrounding communities as well. If one or 2 of those students at Virginia Tech or NIU had been able to carry a concealed weapon into those classrooms AND being able to confront that assailant then perhaps we would not be MOURNING but REJOICING because lives were saved rather than lost -- You YOUNGSTERS who have NEVER SEEN the tragiedies that have gone on in this country and I am talking from VietNam forward -- need to grow up and quit whining
