Can I get a short message engraved on to a diamond? I assume it has to be done with a laser or programmed in to a computer and etched with a machine, but I'm really interested in putting a little message on a diamond that I am having put in a ring for my fiance as a wedding present.

You could just request a diamond solitaire
That's how my husband and I did it. We picked out a nice diamond together, but if your man wants to surprise you you could just tell him what kind of cut you want etc., and he could pick it up himself.
I don't know about inscription on the actucal diamond
but how about on the inside of the band?
