I am now homeschooling my 1st grader, but didn't want to "buy" a cirriculum.  I was hoping to find some websites online I could use as kind of a guide and print out some worksheets from.  TIA!

I'd let her out if she wants. No reason she HAS to take a 12th grade course in 9th grade.

My teachers did this from 1st grade through 12th grade. nm

Not a 3rd grade class. A 1st grade, yes.

homeschool
there is a company called homeschool incorporated - you might can find some information about them on line. good luck!
i did not homeschool
but respect those who do (and do it well). Its outrageous that states are telling people how they can educate, what they can educate about, and how they can or more often, cannot, discipline their children. It is not a good trend for God fearing (or God-respecting) people.
Homeschool Mom
I have home-schooled my son since 1st grade.  He is now a senior.  How complicated it gets really depends on what state you live in, as different states have different reporting requirements.  You have less problems based on peer pressure, bad teachers, etc.  You do have to make a special effort to keep them involved in play groups, etc., for socialization.  The main thing is don't just bring school home, and don't feel like you have to have a rigid environment.  School can really be fun.  You don't have to sit at a desk.  You can have school outside or at any time of the day.  It's all about learing, and all learning does not come from a book.
Homeschool
This is just one of many reasons I chose to homeschool.
Homeschool
Yes, I'm considering that. My sister-in-law did that with both her boys, but she wasn't working at the time. I'm working two jobs now, plus taking care of a disabled family member. I have zero free time as it stands. I guess I will have to try and figure a way to do school and work. Sigh****

Homeschool is Terrific

One of my grandsons is home-schooled.  Two are public-schooled.  The home schooled one is doing very well.  The two who are not are in deep trouble (one is in 1st grade and the other in 3rd grade.  The 3rd grader has been held back twice.  All the school does is complain about him, say he cannot read (he can read at my house) and plague his mother with their frequent phone calls and meetings where they try to place the blame on the parents "lack of helping enough with their homework"  (since when do first and third graders have two hours of homework at night - that is crazy).  The 1st grader is doing okay, but barely.  When my own kids were young (I have 3) my son would have really benefitted frome home school, but at that time the state of California made that impossible.  I went through so much with him and with a nephew (my sister-in-law and brother-in-law spent 800.00 a month on special reading and tutoring classes and that was back in the 1970s and 1980s.  That is the only way he did well, and the tutors agreed with the parents that there was nothing wrong with him or his ability to learn, that it was the school's lack of teaching to the individual that was the problem.  Lucky for him that his parents could afford the tutors.  Psychologist's don't know everything (and I am an old Psych RN and have met a lot who were probably attracted to the field because they were formerly psych patients  .  As a grandma who lives with her home-schooled grandson who is in the fifth grade now I say hooray for home school! It feels really good to know that he gets taught in a way that works best for him and his mother.  If the psychologists are worried about "group interaction" just take her to martial arts classes.  Since when were schools the only place a child could interact?   Martial arts is good exercise and it also has worked wonders with ADD children and I've seen that first hand.  It is helpful with self esteem and helps children work on their ability to work with others as a team.  My home schooled grandson can interact with anyone anytime and we get tons of compliments on his behavior and he is delightfully happy.  Every year we ask him if he would like to change to public school, private school or continue with home schooling.  His answer so far has been homeschool!  My other two grandsons who go to public school are much loved, but there is defnitely a difference in their behavior, their attitude toward learning, and their ability to get along with others when compared to their cousin.  The public schools are not what they were when I went to school - I had wonderful teachers and obtained an education that was second to none.  Alas, this is not the 1950s anymore and the public schools prove that to me every day in every way.  Go to some websites and check out the curriculums.  See what is out there.  I recommend Calvert's great curriculum.  Good luck!

thanks a bunch for these links! nm

Help! Need an idea for a homeschool project sm

I am hosting a co-op on Monday and I have no idea what to do! This is only my second time. The first time I did a scrapbooking project.

Some parents do volcanoes, etc., if they are good at science. They are SO easy to please. The ages are K-5th grade, so there is definitely a big age gap.  I just don't know what I should do!  One time they did a beanbag toss as a game, etc.  Like I said, it's very easy. It should last about 30 minutes.

Thanks for any ideas!! I'm usually creative, but my mind is just drawing a blank right now!

You not need to copy/paste links here and there

I homeschool my daughter, but allow her to attend public school for the SM

social aspects.  She is way ahead of her grade academically.  Eventually, she will either be homeschooled exclusivelly or I will enroll her in a magnet school or alternative school.

It was not just about the sheets
x
fitted sheets--sm
I understand what you mean. Measure not only the height of the mattress, but measure the length, as well. California King sets vary in the length, I believe.

I had run into a problem when I bought a queen-sized pillow top. Mine measures 21 inches in height. Try and find oversized fitted sheets for that, which do not cost almost $300! I finally found some at 22 inches and they stay on very well. Prior to that, I had to buy 20 inch sheets and use the elastic clips, which look like garters, across all four corners. Those helped too.
I have turned those sheets every which way
but loose, have about 3 sets and nothing has been working. I am making notes of all these answers and check the mattress out. It is huge and thick so have to get the measuring tape out.
Boy you pay a lot for sheets! - I have a king - sm
that is a 12" thick mattress and I have 3 sets of sheets for the bed, and I know I did not pay more than $40-$50 for my "deep" pocket sheets (I have 2 sets of those) at JC Penney's. Shop around you can still get good quality and not pay through the nose.
Followup to getting sheets to fit
What would I do without all this wonderful information? I took the information about measuring the mattress. I measured the width and length. They were Cal Kings and I had been buying the regular king and kept getting popped during the night with those sheets pulling off. A relief is here! I got Cal King and lo and behold, I have slept for the past 2 nights in perfect bliss. No more pulling away from the corners. Thanks to all for the suggestions!
Maybe dryer sheets between the
pages? That's a lot of dryer sheets.

When I was recently car shopping, looking at used cars, there was only one I sat in and instantly got out of due to that smell. They should Febreze a car before they show it to prospective buyers.
Towels and sheets are the one load
I never use softner sheets on because it seems like there is a waxy coating on them that I don't like. They don't seem as absorbent or clean-feeling. I take my own towels with me when I travel because at people's houses they feel coated with wax, and at hotels they have that fishy odor sometimes, like school gym towels - ugh. I think that smell comes from using bleach but then not drying them thoroughly before stacking. Yuck.
Can you rub fabric softner sheets on it?

I do that with my animals actually to help them with the static in winter.  Or a spray bottle with water and some liquid fabric softner squirted over things.  Easier and cheaper than 'Static Guard' in a can.

Good luck and congrats on your new furniture!

bounce dryer sheets?
But, I don't know what it does to the paint...maybe someone else will chime in or maybe Google will have the answer :o)
$300 for SHEETS? Try Wal-Mart, Target, or Ross!
.
fabric softener anyone? Bounce sheets?

so towels do get that musty odor.......but I find fabric softener works REALLY well.......no complaints so far

oh and I use TIDE with bleach (also works on colored clothes) for washing......(but I love the smell of Gain, just think Tide washes better)

Thanks for the idea!! Never thought of the softner sheets! nm
x
sheets or liquid fabric softener?
do you find that one is better than the other with line drying?
Think what you need are called deep pocket sheets. Try Linens n Things, Bed and Bath, JCP. nm

This native NYorker agrees! Nice restaurant meal & clean sheets

1st grade for me
When did you stop believing is Santa? I was snooping for presents in 1st grade and found presents under my mom's bed to me from santa.

If you have kids old enough, when did they stop believing?  My kid are 10 and 6 and still believe.

How did you/your kids find out?  They already have friends who don't believe.  I still get away with the tooth fairy as well.

How did you/they react to the truth?  I was crushed.

If kids don't find out on their own, what age do you think they should be told?  I think they all find out soon enough on their own.  I'm not going to tell them.

when my son was in second grade
a couple of weeks before that, I noticed the school # was on my caller ID but there was no message. I asked my son if he may know why the school called. He got kind of quiet and told me that he had said something disrespectful to the teacher assistant so I thought maybe that was the reason. (I had him write a little note to the assistant, telling her he was sorry for showing disrespect but I definitely let him know I appreciated his honesty with me)..... ANYWAY..... I figured with parent/teacher conferences coming up, I would bring it up then. I mentioned there was a call, wasn't sure who it was from, as there was not a message..... that my son had told me about this particular incident, and though they said they didn't make the call, I mentioned if they ever had a problem to please contact me "it's not like I'm going to beat him" to which my son replied, "YES YOU DO MOMMY!"

The teacher, the assistant and I were all looking at each other like WHAT????? My son then went on to say "at Mario Bros"..... LOL.

I thought oh here we go, child protective services will be giving me a visit!! LOL.
When I was in the third grade
I broke my wrist and after surgery, I woke up in a room with a roommate that smoked. I can't even believe now that there was a time when it was okay to smoke in a hospital!
In second grade, she would have been 7 yrs old. Of course,
xx
I really was 6 - in the 1st grade. I already had a - (sm)
bully boy bothering me on the playground, and was standing there on that cold windy morning thinking that going to school with no underpants was just going to complicate things with him even further if he was around while I was doing flips on the monkey bars!

When the bus was only a few feet away, I suddenly ran in front of it (nearly got run over in the process), and ran back home. After a few minutes of banging on the front door, my mom (who'd been in the shower) let me in, and I completed my wardrobe, then ran back to the bus stop. Amazingly, the driver actually waited for me.
Kindergarten, yes. Third grade, no.

It depends on the grade of the oil
If you use high grade oil you can go a little longer, about 4000 or 5000 miles.
Low grade fever again

I am so tired of this....seems like every time I turn around, I am running a low grade fever (99.0 up to 99.3, my normal is around 97.6). The temperature itself would not be concerning, but I can tell by the way I feel, even before I take my temp, that it's running high.

I have allergies and develop sinusitis very easily. In the past couple of months, I have taken three rounds of antibiotics because of low grade fever accompanied by sinus symptoms (pain, pressure, yucky green phlegm, etc.). That's the first time I've taken antibiotics in ages - I have to be pretty desperate to take them, because I don't want to develop a resistance to them.

Now I've got the fever again but no sinus symptoms. Anybody have any clues what else it could be? I mean, I don't hurt anywhere, I don't have any symptoms except the fever.  I know I need to go in and get a complete workup; in fact, I have one scheduled for September 5 (that's the earliest appointment my doctor had). I'm just sick of feeling lousy.

first grade party
Last year when my little girl was in first grade, they had a Teddy Bear tea party for the holidays. Each child could make an ornament or buy one to exchange as a gift. They could wear pj's and bring a teddy bear. Parents were invited. A sign up list for goodies was included. The teacher read stories, and they played music with musical chairs and pin the tail on the elf, I think. They had a lot of fun. The theme was nice too for the little ones, does not matter boy or girl they all like tea parties at that age. For my little boy in first grade, I just sent in cupcakes. I went to the dollar store and got them each a gift which the teacher wrapped and they took turns taking from a bag. Santa (her husband)made a surprise appearance, and once again she read stories to them while they had punch and cupcakes. The other teacher who shared the classroom gave out polar express tickets for the kids to hold at the party and later to take home. It was very cute and fun. Whatever you do have a great time. Happy Holidays
I skipped a grade
I went from kindergarten to 2nd grade when I was 6.

What did you want to know?
where I am they teach this class in 5th grade + up...
.
My daughter is in 3rd grade and still believes
and so do most of her classmates/friends! She has never questioned if Santa was real or not and I absolutely have no intention of telling her anytime soon. You obviously know nothing about MOST 3rd graders if you think that they don't belive in Santa!! Maybe I just live in a city where having an imagination and embracting childhood is still a good thing.
Geez, we're going to tell grade each other's
I think it's time to put this conversation to bed before it gets out of hand.
2nd grade valentine party.... sm

does anyone out there have some game ideas for a 2nd grade valentine's day party?  i've tried looking some stuff up on the internet, but not having much luck.  wondered if anyone out there has some good ideas.

TIA

Does first grade count? It meant so much to me - LOL

Doug kissed me in first grade and then ignored me forever after that.

Tilden in 5th grade - he picked me to be his square dancing partner.

Lyle in 6th grade - had all the makings of an abusive husband, but didn't realize it at the time.

Tilden again in 7th grade - didn't last too long.

Had a HUGE nonreciprocated crush on Dan in 9th grade.

Bill in 10th grade - he was a Sr. so got to go to prom.

Dumped him for Chuck not long after prom.

Met Tom at church camp that summer - long distance thing.

Tim when I was a junior, who introduced me to his friend, Jerre, who ended up being my husband till this day.

That was fun!

They guaranteed me a letter grade better
It is quite expensive though. But it was worth it in my household. Good luck!
FYI, dehydration will cause some to run low-grade temps. nm
