Granite countertops anyone?

I am having granite put in my kitchen. I have a bar that extends close to the counter where the overhang of granite will be about 2-3 inches. Hubs thinks he can put strong brackets under the granite to attach to a stud in the bar- the people installing have suggested we add onto the bar underneath making it thicker in the long run, not just supporting brackets but like plywood nailed onto the bar itself. Has anyone ran into a problem like this before and your solution? Thanks.

Need some ideas about countertops
I am wanting to do something new with mine and would like an inexpensive way to go, have gone the granite, marble route and just want something else. Any ideas?
A cubic foot of granite weighs 166.5 lbs.
I do not have experience with granite countertops, but I'd tend to trust the installers here.
