first time, I can certainly understand your apprehension.  You may want to see if you can get a script for chloral hydrate or another sedative.  My dentist prescribes this for my children and it really helps to relax them before the procedure.  A word of caution, though, you cannot drive with this medication.  You will need someone to drive you.

The other most important thing is not to chew your cheek/lip area when the anesthesia begins to wear off.  You'll have that funny fuzzy feeling in that area and you'll want to chew, but don't.  You also shouldn't eat anything extremely hot or cold for at least an hour or so after the procedure.  I ate saurkraut and hot dogs after mine when I was about 9 or 10 and my whole mouth swelled up.  I don't know what happened, but ever since, I don't eat anything for 2 hours after any procedure.

The poster below gave a really good description of what happens.  That has always been my experience.  The further back in the mouth the tooth is will also make things a little more uncomfortable --- but not painful.  You'll be fine and if you do good, you get to pick a prize out of the drawer!!!!! LOL!
