I think the car is a great idea. My son is not a teenager yet but he knows if he does well in school and saves up 1/2 the money that we will help him get a car. We make it clear that it is something you have to earn which is basically how I see you handling it. I'll admit I'm a strict parent but I also reward well too. There's not a lot of middle ground for me. Either you need someone on your back watching your every move or you are capable of thinking for yourself and making your own decisions. Kids need concrete and substantial things to hold in their head as reminders of right and wrong. I think it's our job to give them those tools and show them the bigger picture to get them through life. For me, the car thing is an example of an adult working hard, getting a good job, earning his house, pool, vacations, etc. just on a smaller scale. Good job on being a parent Jean! One day it will show him how much you care and he will thank you.
