I have a 16yo son. On school nights, he has to be home by 9p. SM

On weekends, midnight.  However, he is not allowed to be gone every night during the week.  It helps that his girlfriend's parents and I are on the same page and when they are together on a school night, they are at her hourse or my house and that makes it easier to enforce the rules.  Plus they do their homework together which is nice.  My son when from failing classes last year to make all As and Bs this year.  So I try to give him a little more freedom because of the effort he's been giving.

Sounds like my kids...on a school day "we just got home from school!" on a vacation day....sm
But this is our vacation! My husband takes vacation days and leaves town without us...lol! He would never dream of taking a day off to work around the house!
I'm 40 and took Home Ec in school s/m
It was a requirement in Jr. High - wish it was offered more in high school though as I think that more would retain the information as they are getting ready to head out on their own. I never did catch on to the sewing machine but I've hand sewn lots of things which takes quite a while. I thank my grandmother though for teaching me to cook/bake and even to crochet. As a matter of fact, one of my new years resolutions was to do more things for me. As a result, I'm crocheting 2 blankets right now for my hubby and son and getting along pretty well with both. I hope to have them both completed for Valentine's Day. The one thing I have wanted to learn for years is how to can. We are starting a good sized garden this year and learning how to can will be a priority!

Depression/Recession will be bad as far as paying off credit cards but honestly, I think it will bring more family time and I will enjoy that.
home school project.
I did this with my Cub Scouts and it went like gangbusters. LOL. First of all, get a big plastic drop cloth, you will need it for clean up. Then get a bulk sized box of Rice Krispy treats or something similar and decorations like sprinkles, colored sugar, nonpareils, etc. and some vanilla or chocolate frosting either in tubes or tubs or maybe some colored frosting tubes, and let them decorate to their little hearts content. You have just killed two birds with one stone. LOL. A project and a snack. My scouts thought it was the most fun they had ever had.
I rushed home from school every day just to see
American Bandstand. I just checked to see where Paul Anka would be touring this year. Planning a trip to Vegas but he will be there in May and the price for 1 seat is $269.00! When I told hubby the price he laughed but I would definitely go if I was going to be there in May. He never comes south, wish he would. I guess with those charges no wonder his tour is only listed through June, only has to work 1/2 year. Saw Sal Mineo in person 1 time when he was in our town, pretty thing! That was prior to Rebel. I had such a crush on James Dean!!! I was able to see lots of the musical stars back then, saw Sam Cooke just prior to his death in concert, Jackie Wilson (my absolute fav of all times), visited Graceland when Elvis was living there right after his first movie- you used to be able to walk right up to the door and drive up on his driveway. I am really, really old but gosh, loved it all.
My kid's school sends us home a note - sm
when 1 kid gets lice. It is sent to the parent's whose kids are in the same class and on the same bus; that is it, and I am fine with that. At least I am aware there is a problem and can be on the lookout. A friend told me that these critters don't like dirty hair and to put hair mousse in the hair as it deters the lice. Figure it cannot hurt, so I did it this last "outbreak" 2 weeks ago and we have avoided it again (3 outbreaks this year to date-1 was in my daughter's class, ick). I just hope I never have to go through it, one with the pain in the butt aspect, and 2 my DH will go totally nuts/ballistic if it ever happens.
I suppose you home school your children?

There are a lot of options for at-home high school (sm)
There are many online high schools used for homeschooling. Some community colleges and 4-year colleges and universities have high school homeschooling options to check into. You may also have the option of her taking some college classes, but watch out...they may be run by gays and lesbians. What is wrong, again, with a gay and lesbian club?
My daughter came home from school with yet another letter...sm
saying that a classmate has lice. This is the same little girl over and over. She had lice the entire year last year in kindergarten and has now had it all of this year so far. Why should she be allowed to come to school and infest everyone? I understand if this is a random thing and it is taken care of, but when it is a constant problem she should not be allowed to attend school. Last year she infested most of her kindergarten class and when I treated my daughter with the shampoo she ended up with an allergic reaction and a flaming red scalp!!! People have even take free products and left them on their porch so mom could use them. She is just to darn lazy to do it. Why should lice be treated any different than when a child has chickenpox?? I am having a meeting with the principal today and then if nothing is done I am going to the school board of education. These kids are crammed 24 in a room and are expected to share computer headphones. I know some people are going to say jeez its only lice, but ya know what it is nasty little bugs and we shouldnt have to get them or suffer with flaming heads because people cannot be clean and get rid of them. I say this kind of infestation should require the child to stay at home and no school. She has so many bugs you can actually stand by her and see all of them crawling!!!! Sorry to be so angry, but this is so frustrating. I have three daughters all with long hair and I have thick, long hair also. Last year it cost me a fortune and took forever to get everything out of everyones hair. It is just nasty and disgusting. The nurse even said they called the health department and got no help on this. Unbelievable!!!
I am 31 and they didn't teach home ec in school...
We had college prep courses...Believe me, I wish I could sew as well...doesn't mean I can't learn now but no, I was never taught in school...
Our school send notices home when they - sm

Does anyone with a learning disabled child home school them? sm

If so, how did you go about figuring out how to teach them?

Our daughter was in public school but we moved her to a private school at the first of the year because she was very behind in the public school and they refused to give her extra services.  Since moving her to the private school we have found out that she does have learning disabilities, which means that she would need to return to the public school since the private school doesn't have special education services available.  She has learned a lot while in the private school because of the small class size and a teacher that spends a lot of time with her and we know that she has learned much more than she would have if she had stayed in the public school.

Now the public school is wanting her to repeat the grade when she returns there in the fall.  Yes, the very same public school that refused to help us before and actually blew off my questioning if she had learning disabilities now only has a "repeat the grade" attitude.  The problem I have with that is that she has proven on testing done at Sylvan learning center that she is academically half way into her current grade, so if she repeats the grade she will be bored for half of the year because she knows that material.

Therefore we're considering home schooling but don't know how effective this might be with her learning disabilities.  Does anyone else do this?  How did you find out about the techniques you needed to teach your child so that they could learn?  We know that she has an average IQ so that's not a problem - it's just getting her brain to process the information correctly.

Thank you.

Poll for parents with school aged kids at home...sm

1.  What ages are your kids?

2.  Do they have their own cell phone?

3.  Do they have their own TV and or computer in their room?  If so, are there set hours they're allowed to use these:

4. Do they receive an allowance?  If so, are they required to do chores to receive this?

As for our house, here's the answers.  Kids are 15 and 8.  15-year-old has a cell phone and pays her bill.  15-year-old has a TV.  The kids share 1 PC that is where we can see what they're doing on it, and they're limited to no more than an hour a day on it if it's a school day.  We do have parental controls in place.  They don't receive an allowance but they are aware of a special chores list that they can choose to do extra things around the house to make money.  They are required to keep their rooms and bathrooms cleaned, as well as alternate cleaning up the kitchen after dinner.

I find it to be harder working from home with children who are not in school..
I have a 2 year old home with me all day and believe me it would be much easier to take her to day care and get my work done...
Call the school. I had a threat like this in my high school and they cancelled school that day.
Thankfully, because the person making the threats was found with material for home made pipe bombs and quit a bit of ammunition and a shotgun. He was arrested and charged. Never allowed back in the school.

I think it would be safer to call the school and get classes cancelled for a day to investigate versus make a scene in the parking lot, especially if the student with the knife is inside with the knife.

Good luck. If nothing happens, pull your child out of school for a week. See what happens. I know that sounds horrible, but small towns is where this happens most often.

working nights
I work nights, 11p-7a and sleep while my child is at school and it works great for me.  I have no problem getting up when it is time to go to school for a function and then I lay down with him at night before I have to come to work and it works out great so far.
Last nights leftovers. BTW sm
what is hot water cornbread?
It's on CMT, Tuesday nights at around 9 or 10:00.
Hosted by John Rich. Last season they had Bobby Brown, Carnie Wilson, Maureen McCormack, Julio Iglesias, Jr., Diana Digarmo from American Idol, and some other people I can't remember. They live together and have to write a a country song and perform it before an audience. Julio won.

This season there's Sean Young (crazy), Lorenzo Lamas, Jermaine Jackson, Irene Cara, some girl from American Idol, and two other guys I've never heard of. They all live in a house together to learn to write a country song and then they have to perform it before a live audience.
that will give me incentive on bad nights (sm)
I use mine every night, too, and it's made a world of difference, but sometimes it gets really old wearing it. Remembering such tragic stories is certainly motivation enough for me. My sympathies to you and your brother's family; that's too young to die.
1 to 2 more glasses of wine some nights.

Why in the world would I have to work nights?
How many people want to work, really want to work nights? First of all, it is very unhealthy for you- do you not know the link between women working nights and breast cancer? Do you not know other illnesses associated with working at night? I have never worked nights, never wanted to, never had to and hope that will always be the case. My gosh, what else do you want to down me for- now it is for not working nights? Ridiculous!
When my husband started nights
It was his decision to switch to nights and I told him if he did he had to go to bed when he got home and be up when the kids got home from school. Some nights he might take a short nap before he leaves (by short I mean an hour) but that was the compromise we made.
Just bought Ŝ Hour Sleep" - used 2 nights - like it a lot (sm)
Bought it at Food Lion. It has valerian root, 5-htp and melatonin and some other ingredients. Works pretty well and I am not tired the next day.
Agree, let him do it, you will survive 3 nights a week - sm
without him. If he can get a cheap enough place it might be cheaper than commuting, and if work would/could help pay for it to that would be great. My DH travels a lot, though it is mostly day driving, his daily drive to work is a min. of 1 hour. When he has to go to the same place for a few days that is 2 hours away, he will sometimes stay 1 night to give himself a break (company pays). He gets a very sore back from all the driving and his left leg bothers him a lot too from whatever position he puts it in in the car. Our first two years of marriage I only saw him on the weekends as he was 2.5 hours away at work (we later moved there); I had no problem with it and still don't. I'd rather have him stay and be alive (accidents happen), then drive home just so he can be here and help me with the kids, etc. Yeah, it gets a bit hectic when he is out of town but I can handle it and so can you.

A few nights ago Jane Valez-Mitchell on her show

gave details on the extent of injuries suffered in the recent chimp attack.  This woman lost both eyelids, nose and lips and both hands in the attack.  They said she may be blind with serious neurologic deficits and is still listed in critical condition.  My heart goes out to her and her family.  Jane also said that some of the hospital staff are actually undergoing counseling after seeing the extent of injuries.

Anyone move from a single family home to mobile home? sm

I own and live in a house in a midwest city in a bad neighborhood (wasn't that bad 11 years ago).  I spent the day waiting for the plumber to come and jackhammer the foundation (slab house, no basement) to find a leaky pipe that is flooding my DD's bedroom. Last week, it was the electrician with quotes for costly repairs.

In the meantime, I've really been thinking about selling out and moving into a mobile home.  Has anyone done this before?  Is a mobile home in a decent park less of a hassle than a regular house?  I'm so tired of cutting the grass and spending $$ to fix things and tired of old flooring and cabinets, etc., that are just too costly to replace.  I'm single with no man to do these things for me and I can't afford a mortgage on a newer house in a good neighborhood.  Some of the pictures I've seen of the mobile homes look really nice and modern on the inside.

Any advice and comments appreciated.  Thanks!

Well I figure I can make my own hours & be home when the kids are home (sm)
I worked PT in an office for a while but spent most of my money on childcare in the summer. Full-time in an office was just a nightmare and I felt like I missed a whole year of my children's lives. I want to be in control of my schedule so that's why I'm looking into the cleaning thing. Never thought I would want to do that but live and learn! Some of the most intelligent people alive work as carpenters and similar things because they have learned what's really important in life. Whew....off my soapbox now :-) Good luck to you!
How is the school's fault if Johnny comes to school armed?
And how is the school's fault if off campus people are getting jumped? Everybody wants to blame the schools, but the reason places have gone "zero tolerance" is because every parent whose kid gets popped for an illegal weapon says, "Oh, my little pookie wouldn't do that." Which is exactly what the parents of every perpetrator of school violence has said. At 15, this girl should have been aware that it was verboten and, if they felt that strongly it was necessary, kept it hidden. If she is not capable of thinking that part through, maybe she shouldn't be trusted with pepper spray anyway.
How is this kid in school with chronic infestation? School nurse

Daniel had a home, a very good home...
with someone in my family at one point.

She met her late husband at a club down the freeway from me. It's not a fancy place, like you say.

She does have a real brother though. That was the connection on our part.

I agree, though. It is sad that all this is coming out the way it is. I believe she was a good person...she just had a lot of problems, mainly drugs. What is really sad is that all of this is going to be seen by her daughter one day when she grows up.

There "The Gift of the Magi," He sells his gold watch to buy her a comb for her hair and she sells her beautiful long hair to buy him a chain for his gold watch. It used to be on "Short Stories by O'Henry" but that's long gone, long ago. Good moral to the story. I can't stand "It's a Wonderful Life" -- too depressing, especially with banks closing, too intimidating right now!!!
In our school district you can go to any school that you want
but you actually have to pay if you don't live in the District. The private schools here are outrageously priced. You could almost send your child to a community college for the amount they charge.
Home sweet home.

What happens at home stays at home. (nm)
:op

She is home, by that I mean she is 1 mile from her home.
I am the one that moved away.  My brother lives there, but she requires 24-hour nursing care right now, and he is unable to provide that for her.  My son is graduating high school this year and I plan to move back to take care of her, but I just can't until then.  I did tell the adminstrator that they have 24 hours to figure this out, and then we will bring in the police.  I have also threatened to go to the media, and this facility has a very excellent reputation and is run by the Brethren Church, so I would think they might not want bad publicity.  It is a pretty small town and this is one of only a couple of care homes in the area.
Job available at school.

Okay, I have been doing this for 8 years.  I think I should be more productive than I am for that much experience.  I only do between 1200 to 1300 lines a day.  I am also just so tired of it.  Today, the hospital's network is very very slow and that certainly doesn't help me and I have to make up the time while my kids are at home which is not very easy...KWIM.  Again, just tired of it.

There is a job opening available at DD. elemetry school about an elementry teacher aide.  It has no specific qualifications just send resume to the superintendent.  Well, I looked online and it seems the basic requirements are HS diploma, good understanding of children, good physical condition.  I match that.  I am a mother of 2, my 5 yo was at the top of her class last year (might be a good qualification for me), I referreed fights etc., supervised dd and her friends on outings, babysat school age kids.

I am just thinking of things that might qualify me for the job.  I have kept this job for 8 years, the job before that was 6 years as a nurses aide at another hospital so longevity might be a plus.  I have never worked anywhere except a hospital.  Well, I did work for an MTSO for a short time, 6 months.

There is a number I could call.  It is voice mail.  I was going to call and ask exactly what are they looking for so I would know whether or not to bother with it but I am not very good at asking for something I need.  Any suggestions, comments.  TIA.

School
I would be livid!  Go through the principal, (complain loudly) on how embarrassed your daughter was, etc. You'll get results I'm sure.   As a last resort, get a doctor's excuse.

I am 56 and working on my third degree.  I love going to school, and I think the older I get, the more it helps keep me sharp.  You might try asking a local college about scolarship opportunities.  Some of them have special programs geared for women.
My take is WHY did the school let a
freshman take a senior course? Advanced or not, she probably does not have the background to be able to keep up with it. My daughter is also a freshman and took Algebra II in 8th grade, so they automatically put her in geometry. There is no way I would have let her take a physics class now.
re: school
I am a mom of two teenage boys and I do not think the school should have been the ones to punish the child since it didn't take place at the school from school computers or on school property. It is the parent's responsibility to reprimand the child when something is done by their child in the home. Since the teacher found out about it, that teacher should have called the parent and should have allowed the parent to take the appropriate action. Teachers should not under any circumstances have the authority to reprimand children at home under their parent's care. Only when something like this happens from school, on school property, from a school computer should the teacher have that authority. I used to work in a public school and there are boundaries as to how far teachers should go. The rest is up to parents!
We met at school

Best friend's boyfriend at that time and I absolutely could not stand him!

Then we ended up kind of *stuck* together when we went out with a group of friends. Somehow we just clicked and from that first night, I knew we were going to be together forever! That night while all the other couples were making out like crazy, he and I just sat on a playground slide and talked. Then at the end of the night, he kissed me on the cheek...I knew right then I was hooked. We've been married 21 years, have 3 children, and are expecting our first grandchild in August!!! Aww, whatta love story

I don't know what everyone's school districts
are like, but I don't have any of these problems. Even at our old house that was in a little more of a low-income area, the school was okay. I noticed a huge difference in the kids and the parents over there though, but I have had no problems with my kids in public school.

They both are testing above average. My daughter is in K and has a sheet she is to work on all month and then turn in, nothing too serious. My son usually does his homework/reading on the bus or spends about 30 minutes at the most completing it when he gets home.

Maybe I am just lucky that they both excel without any pushing from me or the school or I just am in a great school district, although I know we are in the best in Texas. My son does have some anger problems sometimes and a few problems with self-control. We work on this and I think the idea about the martial arts is an excellent one. In fact, we are looking at places to enroll him out here. He is pushing to go back to gymnastics though, so we will see. Honestly, I think any extracurricular activity that is in a nurturing environment is a good idea for every kid.
Public school
I have a granddaughter in the mountains of North Carolina in the fifth grade, who has teachers from you know where..  They should not be in a school setting. One used four letter words and they were not love.  They will not go out with the students at recess, so it is a free for all with three to five grades out there all at once.  There is bullying and if she says anything, the teacher says she is squealing.  I don't think when your knees are bleeding from being knocked down, it is squealing.  The third grade was awful.  They finally got her moved out of there into another class and the teacher was wonderful.  That was about three months before the year was over and that was because they went to the superintendent of schools.  Next year was bad and this year is the worse.  The teacher tells the student she cannot believe the students are that ignorant, loses papers the students turn in and then gives them a zero.  Her mother saved her papers and showed them to the teacher and she had some phony excuse, like she had so many papers to correct.  Teachers are supposed to do that.  The teacher also has a teacher's aide three times a week and there are only 15 students in the class.  She also  calls my granddaughter a liar when she says she turned her papers in.  She says my granddaughter is to lazy to do the work.  My granddaughter loves school, is on the honor roll and would have made the principal's list had the teacher not lost three papers that my granddaughter had turned and gave her the grade she deserved instead of giving her a zero three times.  Don't say go to the school and the principal.  When they go, the teacher acts so nice and after they leave, she picks on my granddaughter and tells her not to go home and tell her parents things that are not true.  The principal does nothing.  They have her on a list for a private school and after paying taxes, no one should have to pay to go to a private school, but that is what you have to do.  I cannot believe that all the parents do not get together and descend on the principal's office.   My granddaughter loves school but not this year because of the teacher.  Cannot wait for the year to be over.  She has been humiliated in front of her classmates and when a classmate tries to stand up for her and tell the teacher she is not talking or doing any of what the teacher says she is doing, she tells the classmates not to try to take any sides.  She is a very loving, sweet, and intelligent girl and what she has to go through every day, makes my skin crawl.  When school is out, I am going to write the principal, the teacher and the superintendent of schools and tell them what I think of their teachers.  If they did away with tenure, maybe the teachers would take their work more seriously.  I never worked for a company that told me if I stayed with them for 10 years, I could not be fired.  Ridiculous.  The principal does not like to report anything is wrong because in the reports they have to send to the state board of education, the more problems the school has, the less money they get, so they do not report anything is wrong.  Report cards were given out Friday and the teacher wrote that she was a very good student, and a pleasure to have her in the class.  Why write that when all you do is pick on her.  To protect herself when things get tough.  Thank you for letting me vent.
church school

Well, I didn't say the ONLY place to find teachers who care is at a church school, and I certainly don't believe that.  I do think your chances of finding them in a church school are a whole lot higher, however.  I didn't intend to create a religious argument either.  I was genuinely interested in why you would not want your children in a church school.

Public School
My husband and I have two special needs children and homeschooling was the best thing we could have ever done for them.  My oldest child is learning up a storm and my youngest child is going to start being home-schooled next year.  We both work full-time and we still find time to homeschool.  It does not take as much time as you would think.  There is just you teaching your kids and it goes a lot faster and they learn faster.  We thought we could not homeschool, but we were forced to as the public school did nothing for our son and now nothing for our other child.  You can do more than you think you can if you have to.  Good luck!
Many phases during school
I was gothish for a while myself. Doesn't sound she's been doing it too long if she was asking for different makeup last summer. I dressed goth even longer than I really felt like just because my parents rode my butt about it.
