I too love the smell of bleach on clean clothes but kills me to actually clean with it. I am not a brand name user but I have found to stick with stuff like PineSol, Cascade, Tide and Downy. I just find when I spend that little extra for these, I get the results I want. You just have to use more of the cheaper brands. My mother said when she was little her grandmother used ammonia, great for cleaning out blood and rust stains.

I stick with Tide w/o bleach because it does not fade my
uniforms and colors. I also have a spot to pour my Downy or I use the ball that releases it during the rinse cycle, therefore avoiding missing that part. That ball is just a one time expense. I add all of that right when I do the detergent. Mine keep that strong fresh Downy smell as long as they are in the closet as well. Another thing would be to add a few dryer sheets to the closet or cabinet where you store your towels. If they are exposed to fresh air they will lose this smell pretty much. Especially after being used, the dampness will absorb odors from the air. Try spraying them with febreeze if you want to use them again.

I love regular old Pine-Sol but the new Blue kind is to die for. Love that clean smell. Another thing to look for is Odo-Ban. Great cleaning product!
