It's a term of endearment at my house

Posted By: Not Southern on 2009-05-19
In Reply to: The phrase is "Bag Lady" - sm

My grandmother is affectionately remembered as the California Bag Lady. She had a home (trailer in a trailer park) and a car. Both were stuffed to the windows with STUFF. STUFF that she might need some day. STUFF that she got for free. STUFF that was valuable. In reality, after she passed away, it was mostly STUFF that went to the dumpster. But she was so cute about it. I don't know exactly how to explain it, but it was who she was and I wouldn't have had any other grandmother! Yes, she had lots of bags! She was an artistic sort too, and she would draw beautiful pictures on the brown grocery store bags with chalk.

Terms of Endearment
I remember when
Shirley McClaine was screaming for them to give her daughter her meds because it was time. I was 17 when I saw this movie and I kept thinking, my mother would be exactly the same way.
What is your fav med term?
Salpingo-oophorectomy.  Don't know why, it just has a ring to it.
The term you might be looking for....
attention hoor?
I use the same term and you and I both know
it means absolutely nothing at all and Paula getting in a twit and then Simon duh went right along with her.
Term papers

Does anyone know the going rate for typing term papers nowadays?

The usual term is
selective nerve root block.

Can you hear that?

Otherwise, just see what you get with googling

nerve block, sciatica, selective.

You must not come to Stars often, This is a term

When I hear the term
single mother, I always think you have not been marriedI To me any man who says this to ANY woman, don’t care whether married, single, divorced, widowed and each of us falls into 1 of those categories, unless you really know him well and know he is kidding and you have started off paying for things, this is probably how he is looking at you, being a sugar mamma to him.
Need help with ideas for remodeling house and decorating. We bought a house

in fair condition about 10 years ago, got into some medical problems, and have just now paid off the mortgage.  Hubby and I agreed we would do nothing to the house for remodeling because we wanted to pay it off first, then the medical bills.  I need to know of some websites/magazines/books to start researching for how to go about this.  These will be major repairs - roof, septic, basement, windows, pretty much everything except wiring.  Where do we start?  Maybe hire a general contractor just to do an evaluation and give us recommendations?  Hubby is a handyman but cant seem to get a handle on where to begin.  We would like to do as much of the work ourselves as possible - labor of love and all that...

Thanks for any and all kind suggestions!

I'm with them. There is a term called metrosexual. Don't
!!!
Please don't use the term "trailer trash" (sm)
It offends me...children have no choice but to grow up where their parents raise them and many good decent people live in trailers. I grew up living in poor areas, part of the time in trailers. I was a good kid, good grades, tried hard to be a good person but got made fun of a lot and called "trailer trash" or "white trash". It is very unfair to group people all together in a big clump and stereotype them like that. I overcame the way I grew up, but to this day, if I decide I want to move into a trailer, I sure will.
Not the right term to use here. Amen against religion?nm

Ok, but there are NO long-term studies!!!
And I don't know about you, but my daughter is NOT going to be a guinea pig for this vaccine!!! My daughter's doc keeps asking me to allow her to have this, but since they have no idea of the adverse reactions YEARS after the vaccine, there's no way I'm going to subject her to it. I really hope 10 years from now the girls that had Gardasil don't have problems with fertility or heaven forbid, have babies with birth defects because their parents let them be guinea pigs for drug companies!
you don't know the long term problems with it, but we know what happens without it! nm

Are you considering a long-term relationship
with this gentleman? If so, you might want to give some serious thought to his money issues as they could very well become your money issues.

His joke was probably just an attempt to be funny, though rather clumsy and thoughtless. Since it bothers you, you could discuss it with him and tell him why it made you angry and base your next move on his response.

It would be his actual money issues that would be of greatest concern to me.
yeah, there's a term for revenge of this kind-it's

BC Powder Arthritis, but only in the short term. nm
;
What a wonderful term!!! I gotta start using that one!
xx
I agree - they don't know the long-term ramifications
texas made it mandatory according to the governor making it mandatory (Perry is his name, if I recall correctly) - and that was just PLAIN WRONG. You don't make this kind of thing mandatory and go against the parents wishes....
20 years down the road, we will REALLY see the ramifications of forcing this drug on young teen girls....

Oh my. I think it's a...well...sweet term. I'm curious why it bothers you?
nm
the term *eliminated* brings horrible memories

*eliminate, exterminate* when it comes to talking about humans (even if the perp here in your article acted inhumane)...

horrible memories, i.e., The Final Solution from 1939-1945....

please find another word....thank you.

Is it legal to evict a long-term tenant - sm

who has always paid the rent on time, simply because they want to 'remodel'?  I've lived here for close to 20 years, and just today out of the blue, the manager walks up and hands me an eviction notice!  I was like, "Huh????" and he said they wanted to "renovate".   But my unit, only.   I guess others have gotten new rugs, appliances, etc. as tenants have come and go, but I've been here forever (and pay rent that is considerbly below market).   I've lived here forever, don't drink, never had a party, keep it pretty clean, etc.   The heater, oven, fridge, bathroom fixtures, etc., are old, but still in perfectly good working condition.  So, I asked if I'd be able to come back afterward, and the manager said they were going to raise the rent (to far more than I can afford) once the renovation is complete.

So my question is --  Do you think it's legal to evict a tenant just because you want to put in a new rug, new paint, etc., and charge more to the next tenant?  I'm thinking about calling a lawyer, but don't know if I have a case or not.  If I move, I'm going to have to go at least 60-70 miles away, in order to find affordable rent.

Cell phones - How dangerous is their long-term use?

Hoax or not, the long-term safety of cell phones is still very much in question!  They are not innocuous, and emit harmful electromagnetic radiation in varying amounts.  Just as policemen's radar guns laid in their laps have caused testicular cancer, so the incidence of brain tumors from cell phone usage has also been on the rise.
That very thing happened to my stepdad, a brain tumor & aneurysm right above his right ear, where he holds his cordless phone constantly.  Cell phone signals decrease fertility of humans & animals alike, & Swedish researchers have proven that they are ESPECIALLY damaging to the brains of children!  Cell phone-using kids are FIVE times more likely to get brain cancer.  I gave mine up over 5 years ago & will never use another one on a routine basis.  This issue is being covered up, but is certain to become the controversy of the 21st century, just as tobacco was in the 20th century.

WIRELESS NETWORK!!!- sounds like you are getting hacked (for lack of a better term)
You need to secure your network. Check outside your home at these times for a strange car. A neighbor with a teenage boy or girl using a wifi connection to access your network getting on a porn or gaming site that bills via a VOIP dial-up It can be done.

you want to make sure they cant access you need to secure your network with passwords and such and turn your router off at night when you go to bed no wireless = no connection.

Hope this helps feel free to email if you need some more info.
short arms, short-term memory loss...
I too suffer from Short Arm Syndrome. Add to that the short-term memory loss that middle-age brings and I have now discovered I need to lasso the &*%$ reading glasses around my neck or my day will be spent wandering in circles asking the dog where my glasses are.

I have two pairs, per advice of doctor. I do not wear glasses all the time, so he thought I was not ready for bifocals. My son gave me a wonderful eyeglass case for Christmas that is big enough to hold both pairs should I ever venture out of the house amongst the living.

I did manage to find some "sporty" looking around-the-neck-eye glass holder thingies - what DO you call those things? I'd use twine before getting those multicolored beaded ones. I have a neon coral one and an emerald green one. Too bad I can't find the former, I can't remember where I put it.
We have a house and
who want a dog.  I'm not a cat fan and we can't have an outside dog b/c we live in a development (and I don't want a dog inside).  Rabbits are quiet and cute.  Thanks for the insight!!!
Get a job in house
Again you knew what you were getting into when you signed on.  Also some MT's in our hospitals do have to work holidays.  Some of it is covered by those that chose to "work at home" but again they knew this when they took the job with being able to "work at home."
Well, not in my house!
lol

Do they have a dog house?

I definitely agree that she should take the dog inside, but if she absolutely refuses maybe you could buy her a well-insulated doghouse so at least the animal will have some protection from the cold.  Animals have survived cold temperatures for years, but they need a place that shelters them from the cold, and she needs to provide that for them!!

I feel for you - vegetarian here :)  One of the big reasons I lost respect for my ex-best friend was the way she treated her animals.  She was always buying dogs and cats and then leaving them at the pound or pawning them off on people.  It really made me think less of her, because what kind of person does that! She also won't admit she did anything wrong!  arrrrgh! It drives me crazy when people don't take proper care of their animals.  They are a big responsibility - not just a cute puppy to show off when it's convenient.  I hope your daughter straightens up, but again, if she doesn't I highly recommend purchasing a good doghouse for the poor dog!

i want to eat at your house
I have a cookbook from LA Leche League - Whole Foods for the Whole Family.  many good recipes.  don't know if still available, bought 12 years ago.   Many ethnic recipes on-line to try.
Get him out of the house
This kid is angry at you. He is going behind you undoing everything you do. He wants your attention, even if it is negative.

He needs kids his own age - he may be a number to the day care people, but he'll be a real kid to the other kids and will make friends.

Get him into something you can afford, even if it is just the 2-hr a day program. It will work wonders for him and for you.

Good luck - let us know how it goes for you.

S/L you are carrying a huge load. Home schooling sounds great, but when you're working another job as well, it can break your back. Maybe you and the husband need to reassess how you are doing things. Do the home school classes when the DH is there to help out, or whatever takes the stress out of it for you.
Your cat looks like it ate the house!
Beautiful!
have them to your house? or -
talk to all about it, best policy. bet they understand - haven't they been there? they all might settle for a drive by later for coffee and desert for t-giving...or some other type of compromise.

That's every day at my house :)

the dog house - sm

Girls, has your hubby ever gotten you a "practical" gift that you did not appreciate?  This video will put a smile on your face!  Enjoy the lighthearted fun.

You just described my house

I chuckled reading your post. I have 9 - yes 9 - cats, three of whom are kittens in the range of 7 months old.  I got them all about a week apart and they're each about a month apart in age.  They are refugees from the neighbors really bad decisions.

Nothing in the house is safe any more.  All of my bigger plants are now in hooks on the ceiling - the smaller plants were already there.  It looks silly, but it works.  There is nothing left on any flat surface.  It cracks me up when they get going and chasing each other.   My house is very cat friendly at this point.  I made the choice to put the good furniture in storage for now and I have washable furniture.   There are cat beds everywhere.  My office shelving unit is more cat bed than it is storage and I have 2 beds on the desk beside my computer.

Yes, I am the crazy cat lady.

This is always a hit at my house

Rotel tomatos

Velveeta cheese

taco-seasoned ground beef

Brown ground beef and add taco seasoning (as in making tacos). Melt Velveeta and Rotel in microwave; add meat mixture. I transfer to a crockpot to keep it hot.  Serve with corn chips. This recipe is made with 1 lb ground beef, 1 packet taco seasoning, 1 small can Rotel, and half of a big block of Velveeta. Of course, you can vary it to the amount you need to serve.

House
Love the show, but I missed it...what happened?????
Dr. House would say to see a
However, the suggestion to check out the truck/car for carbon monoxide exhaust is really intriguing. Does he get a headache while the wavy-thing is happening? CO poisoning also causes a killer-headache, I've heard.

I'd also look at what he's having for breakfast and what time he's eating it, in case there's possibly a blood sugar connection. When my blood sugar drops, all sorts of crazy symptoms start happening. Doing a glucometer, I'm always below 80 when that happens.

I really think the beer intake the night before is not relevant at all. Amusing though!

Ya gotta love him though!
I have Karndean throughout my house. It looks just
like wood, I mean REALLY looks like wood, but it's not.  It's not a vinyl either.  You just have to see it.  See the website below.
When we moved into our house..sm

the people who lived here before us had a rabbit that got out of the hutch and they couldn't get it back in, so it lived in our yard.  One nice warm evening I took our house cat out with me while I was outside.  I looked away for a minute and in the blink of an eye, the male rabbit was...um...having nonconsensual relations with my poor, terrified female cat.  I could not believe my eyes. Needless to say, my cat stayed in the house after that.

We just moved into a new house
and the last owners left some of the nails in the wall where they had things hanging and I guess thinking we might want to hang something there as well.

Well, we had this little sign my mom had give me with 2 turtles on it with some saying on it, about family or something. Every time I turned around, my hubby had that thing hanging somewhere. I would take it down and put it away and the next day it would be hanging somewhere else.

I told him to leave the decorating to me, haha! ;)

We just reached our 7th year being married. I hope that in 21 years we have that same relationship. So far, so good.

Cute story, thanks for sharing. :)
Sounds like what we just went through at my house

My 16-year-old daughter was also smoking on and off since last summer.  When her dad actually caught her red-handed, she was grounded indefinitely - no phone or computer and no friends.  She had exercise-induced asthma as a child and I thought I had drilled it into her from little on up how stoopid (censor wouldn't let me spell it right)   smoking would be.  Not to mention that my parents both smoked and mom has severe asthma and dad has the start of emphysema as well as many other health problems.

Anyway, she started again and finally, I went through her purse and found 2 packs of cigarettes, which I took and she was grounded from seeing the boyfriend, which was far worse than the phone, I think.  She threw a fit because her older brother also smoked in high school, but he was already 18, so not much we could really do about it.  She's only 17.  Plus the fact that she just started oral contraceptives and her doctor told her right to her face no smoking.

But, I think we are on the right track at the moment.  Good luck to you because this sure isn't fun.

House Warming
My husband and I are going to be throwing a housewarming party once we get situated and moved in to our condo in a few weeks.

Is it appropriate to register for gifts and pass out the registry cards to those that ask for them, or should we just not register at all?

I'm not gift grubbing, but a lot of people have asked if we're registering, and what they should get us. I don't want to be rude and put the registry card in the invites, but I don't want to not hand them out and no one knows what to get us, if they do decide to bring a gift.
Your house your rules. I would not even
open that door to letting them sleep together at your place because then it will only get worse - trust me - with kids 30, 28, 24 and 17 - I've seen and heard a lot.  Stick by your guns - you will be happier and the kids know where you stand.... you are not a prude and don't think for a second you are!!   Best of luck!!
buying house with BF
Bear with me. I am not judging here as I do not know the circumstances other than you stated you and BF want to buy a house. I am assuming you are young, which to me, anyone under the age of 40 falls into that category! If and when buying a house comes to be, consider hiring an attorney to protect your interest, and your BF should do the same. Buying a home with a BF/GF is VERY scary. Will both names be on the mortgage? If so, what if one dies, becomes disabled, flees to Tibet to do lunch with the Dali Lama? The other is left holding the bag with all the financial responsibilities. The same things can happen if you're married too, but it's harder to legally resolve such issues if you are not married.

I don't mean to rain on your parade here! Just want you to think. Buying a house is so exciting but it's the biggest financial commitment you will ever make. You don't want it to come back and bite you in the butt years down the road.

To save, keep only one credit card and pay it off each month. That saying 'pay yourself first' is tried and true. Open an account and have 5-10% of every paycheck auto-deposited in it. If you don't have it, you won't miss it. Open short-term CDs with your savings. They are risk-free, you can access your money if you truly need it, and you'll get more interest than a savings acct. Do your research, stay away from adjustable rate mortgages, and buy beneath your means. Think of every worst case scenario you can and talk them over with your BF BEFORE you buy. This is your financial future you are about to change. You will be committed to a house/mortgage, but not to each other - legally.

OK - my doom and gloom post is done! Regardless, all the best to you!
Lake House!!!

Oh is she on house arrest?
Interesting- a stay at her mansion would be like a dream spa vacation to any of us. She is probably laughing her butt off that she got out of this.

It's like kids today being 'grounded' for doing something wrong and they are up there in their bedrooms with big screen TVs, Ipods, computers w/webcams, cellphones, blackberrys, you name it. Gee if I had had a room like that growing up I would have never left it- I would have had to be banned from my room for punishment instead, lol.
