Stephanie Plum are wonderful. They are fast reads, very funny, relaxing. "One for the Money" is the first one.

Does anyone read the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum books? I am hooked! sm
My MIL gave me the first three and said I would love them. I did but too much because I stayed up until 3 last night to finish the last one! I went out today and bought 4 through 13! I feel like a junkie but I absolutely love them!

but rather light in that regard. They are hilarious and very character driven.

If you've already read one, get two or three and there's also several in-between books that are hilarious! There's also a book out that I'm recommending to all my friends - it's called Me and Mr. Darcy by Alexandra Potter. It's a hilarious take on Pride and Prejudice set in the here and now. As for your son, sorry I can't help - my son is 8 and reading Harry Potter. I've no clue what a 17-year-old would like.

I've sold 125 books on half.com but most were my childrens college text books. I have sold some
t I picked up for a quarter at a thrift store. Old Dr. Seuss books do well. I price them a bit lower than the rest of the pack and put that they are from a nonsmoking home. Half.com does take a small commission but they deposit the check in your bank account monthly.

I couldn't get enough of Dr. Seuss. My father used to read Green Eggs and Ham to me allllllll the time. I gave him a copy when my son was born so he could carry on the tradition with his grandchildren. I then moved on to Sweet Valley High.

One more suggestion - buy the books
second-hand and/or get the paperbacks for those out in paperback. No need to go broke.
Which is better - books or movies?
I never really caught on to the whole Harry Potter thing - it even took me a while to like the movies. But everyone is so crazy about the books, my curiosity is killing me. I don't have a lot of extra money to invest to quash my curiosity, so which should I invest in - the movies or the books? I do know that usually books are better than movies, but I'd hate to spend all that money if the movies are just as good!
I loved them both, but get the books
and then nobody will have to talk you into seeing the rest of the movies, LOL.
Plus with the movies you don't get into Harry's head as much, and that's where you get to know Harry. I can only imagine that people who only see the movies don't know him nearly as well as the readers do.
Guest books are not new
I had one at my wedding 22 years ago. I was also guest book attendant for a friend from high school. Got there early, got to see everyone as they came in and say hi to people I hadn't seen in awhile. Not that big of a deal. Of course, she didn't tell me what I had to wear, either.
My favorite books
My absolute favorite book of all time is Paint the Wind by Cathy Cash Spellman. My next favorite which are hard to find (the author passed away) is by Day Taylor - The Black Swan & Moss Rose.
I used to like Danielle Steele until she started making her characters snooty, but her older books Thurston House, Palamino and The Ring are some of my favorites.
Another good one is Barbara Taylor Bradford's "A Woman of Subtance". Bout a woman from the 1800s/early 1900s who went from being a maid to being a successful business woman. My husband saw the movie and he loved it.
However, I wish I still had the book Paint the Wind. I could read that over and over and over.
Truly A Day for the History Books
DH replaced the empty toilet paper roll last night.
In the 32 years we have been together, this is the first time I can remember him replacing a roll. Please don't tell anyone else because they would probably kick him out of the He Man Club, which all men who don't replace rolls (and that would be 99% of them) secretly belong to.
This is one of those days where, years from now, I will think back about what I was doing when I discovered it. (Sort of like people do with other significant historical events.)
In my world, this is at least as big as discovering a cure for cancer, landing a man on the moon, or discovering life in outer space, so I just wanted to share the good news with you - because, ladies, it proves that there is hope for the rest of you!
Those are my very favorite books ever...!!!
I've read them all more than once and just LOVE them. Can't wait for the 7th book, but I think that's the last one, which makes me sad.
I never knew there were books
I had never heard of the books, although then again we don't have any books stores in our town (except the section in Wal-Mart and Fred Meyer). I have heard a lot of times people like books better.

Unwanted books
The same thing happened to me Some time ago, I ordered a book. In very tiny print, it said we will be sending you books annually or how often. You can review them and keep them for a price of . They are hoping that you will just keep the book and send them the $$$. I did finally call and tell them no thanks.

From a magazine I subscribe to. They are trying to get me to purchase various related books from them. I always refuse the package and do not even open it, then they send a bill or two, and then it begins all over again. What does everyone suggest I do? This is getting really old. 
Good Books
Is anyone else into medical mysteries? I love Robin Cook and Michael Palmer and actually pick up terminology from them.
I also love Ann Rule - she truly does rule - she writes true crime.
I occasionally still read Stephen King and Dean Koontz (only if it's not supernatural - he's really faltered there).
Lisa Gardner is awesome.

Classics/Books
I'm not really one for the classics either though I did like To Kill a Mockingbird.
I haven't read Sue Grafton or Janet Evanovich. I average at least 40 books a year between true crime, medical mysteries and murder mysteries. I am also hooked on TV shows like Forensic files, FBI files, Cole Case Files and that show called something "Evil" where the forensic psychiatric examines the minds of serial killers. What really spooked me was the BTK killer's lack of emotion. It was just like he was talking about nothing more than an ATM withdrawal. My husband jokes that I just read true crime and watch those shows because I'm plotting to kill him.

What is so great about them? I do love to read so I am just curious what could possibly be happening in those books! My 13-year-old niece had her nose buried in the new one all day today she barely looked at us. lol. If they are that good I may be borrowing hers :)

Stephenie Meyer's books
called the Twilight Series" - they are really good and I was so surprised. Fun to read. They are now making a movie of these and we are awaiting the fourth book that is supposed to come out in May. Go to her website stepheniemeyer.com and yes, I know that is a weird way to spell stephenie. I bought these for my daughter and then I ran out of things to read and they were really good for a change of pace and now I too am "hooked."
I passed around several transcription books -sm
at the beginning of a semester to a class at a business school for the 20+-year-old students to see various TX resources available and afterwards, one book was "missing". I was very surprised. Bottom line: The bookstore was out the book, and I hated the loss for the school. Actually the bookstore was probably out twice for the book if it was afterwards returned to the bookstore for resale by the student who stole it.

We actually got HBO solely for the reason of watching this series. So far it is...okay? I love the books but the series is not sticking strictly to them, and is changing some things that I don't think should be changed. However, by itself, I do like the series. Just hate it when they go from books and change majorly seriously big things!!

My daughter had the books and I read them
at 50. Absolutely love them and am going with my daughter and her friends to see it. I was disappointed after I read the last book that there were not more.
I am currently also watching TrueBlood on HBO and absolutely love it. It is based on a series of 9 books and I am on book #5. Certainly would not recommend the series or books for young teens (very graphic in all aspects), but very good series. The series is not following the books, which is a little disappointing however.
I only hope the Twilight movie in in line with the books.

Apparently once you miss your first period, it takes on average 4 years for the peri- and full-blown menopause to be completed. Some get through faster, some slower. I'm 50 and have only missed a single period so far, but the mood swings are horrendous already, as well as the increased bleeding. EEEK - this is not gonna be fun!

This is a series of books that set off that movie "Eragon". The latest one to come out was called "Brisingr". I have a boy about that age and he loves those books.
He probably overbooks or books so little time -sm
per patient, and it takes twice the time alloted getting him behind. Probably overbooks taking into account some won't show or will cancel, which affects his bottom line since insurance takes a discount off his rates, some more than others, again affecting his bottom line. It is all about money in the end though, that and maybe they have to see a certain percentage of patients to continue being a partner in the practice. Either way your wait time is inexcuseable. I used to go to a bigger place as well, one appt would take 4 hours, it was insane, min. hour wait to just get out of the waiting room. I even tried different locations of the same chain (VA Eye Institute), no luck there. They all stunk. It took a while but have a good eye doctor now, so my daughter and I have a good eye doctor finally that does not make you dread your eye appt anymore. He is about 45 so at least I hope to be with his practice for years to come.

but faves are still old school--Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes. Got hooked on the Harry Potter series. LOL. BTW, as a football fan, (#1 Eagles fan), agree with about Brett. He needs to retire.
Good books/authors
Erica Spindler is great -- mystery/crime can be gruesome but she has IL and New Orleans in mind -- her first book that I read was based in IL, and I knew EXACTLY where she had the book plotted -- Tami Hoag is another great "mystery/crime" writer but if I want "light" I have gotten into Debbie McComber and her "numbered series" -- like a soap opera and when I read Marley and Me 450 pages finished it in a day and a half plus working 12 hour days -- BTW -- JMO, but the book is much better than the movie

Not OP but feeling the same way for a long, long time. Would like it to be better.
I believe we read the John Gray books because that was what was out then, but -
I think Dr. Phil's books are better and more practical. We got the relationship book when it came out to see if there was anything else we could work on. Go to counseling and REALLY work on it. It will work if you give it a chance (for the most part). I will tell you there were couples in our class who were FAR worse off than we were who said at the end they never felt closer. Not sure where they are at now, but I know for a fact my hubby and I have never been closer or happier. Remember, put as much effort into your anger, resentment, etc., as you do into cultivating a good relationship. Most of the time men are clueless the little things they do harden our hearts to them and are very open to doing what it takes to make us happy once they find out what we want and need. Pfaltzgraff, books, cars, shoes
When I was a rich yuppie I collected a ton of Pfaltzgraff (tea rose), then I decided I had way more than I'll ever use so I quit. I'll never have enough books though. I also have some cars waiting to be restored and my guy is into that. We also have some toy vehicles that keep accumulating. I need to get rid of some of the shoes though, its just so hard to throw them away!
There are lots of things in the Good Books
Isn't it interesting what we choose to take from them? An abuser will quote *spare the rod and spoil the child* as justification for beating a child to death. Guess he missed *thou shalt not kill* or maybe his priest/minister/rabbi/iman interpreted that commandant as not applying to a crying child or one that has had an *accident*. Guess that's why there are so many religious wars: It's not so much about what Jehovah/God/Allah said as the agenda of the human who interpreted it.
