My MIL is that way.

I attribute it to her age and the fact that she doesn't have much going on in her life. Everything is negative and she goes on and on. We live in a small town and even people like the lady who cuts our hair has said something.

My husband has said something to her a few times but she just doesn't get it. We have a 10yo and people shouldn't be talking about those things around kids...especially grandma!

Well, in short, she lives very close to us. She finally got the message that she can't just stop in whenever she wants and we now limit our trips there. We stay for short amounts of time and always plan to have somewhere else to be so when she starts in one of the adults can say "ready to go?!" and we can scoot out.

My family lives farther away so I can understand the distance thing and you want her to still be a part of their lives but 1 year without seeing them won't do any terrible harm and maybe she will get the message. Although if she is anything like my MIL you will have to sit her down and spell it out. She won't get it if you beat around the bush...she still may not get it if you tell her precisely but I think she will understand when you show up without the kids and never happen to work it out when she wants to come see you.
